ZEM ZEM Upon 1nqu1r1ng why our yearbook 15 called the ZEM ZEM you would see no connect1on 1f you were told only that It 15 named for an Arab1an well That 1S true but more must be explamed before you f1nd a reason Perhaps an anc1ent legend Wlll help The Arabs bel1eVC that Ishmael 1S the true son of Abraham and that as h1s eldest son he rece1ved the double port1on of Abraham's 1nher1tance Arab1a The B1ble tells us that Hagar and Ishmael her on bemg turned out of the house of Sarah were forced to wander about IH the desert When Ishmael was about to d1e of th1rst God sent the angel Gabrlel to tread upon the ground where there 1mmed1atelybubbled forth water sweet as honey Th1s 1S how the sacred Well of Zem Zem was formed 1n what 1S now Mecca Arab1c trad1t1on has lt that some t1me later God told Abraham to go to Mecca and w1th Ishmael bu1ld h1m a temple Many years passed and several generat1ons had had custody of the temple or Kaaba when lt was taken by enem1es Wh1le the foes of the Ishmael1tes had Well of Zem Zem It became f1lled up and sank 1nto obscur1ty Not unt1l many years later after the enerrues were overcome was the well uncovered Abd el Motalleb grandfather of Mohammed heard a vo1ce telllng h1m to d1g the Well of Zem Zem W1th further 1nstruct1on from the vo1ce he was able to clean out the well and the statues were placed once aga1n mn the Kaaba The water from the Well of Zem Zem was used by many generat1ons untll lt became necessary to bu1ld an aqueduct to secure a more adequate supply for the growlng c1ty The Arabs be11eVe that a dr1nk of the Zem Zem s waters br1ngs health and that much water w1ll wash away sm When a certa1n Mohammedan teacher was askedabout h1s memory he sa1d that smce he had drunk the waters of the sacred Well of Zem Zem he had forgotten nothmg that he had ever learn ed As he knew many trad1t1ons lt became trad1t1on that to dr1nk from th1s well w1ll re store memory A yearbookalso br1ngs back memor1es and so lt 1S f1tt1ng that the f1rst an nual staff named ours the ZEM ZEM May th1s twenty f1fth ed1t1on of the ZEM ZEM br1ng you many happy memor1es of Mount Healthy H1gh School 14 . . . , , . . . , , . 7 . 7 ' .. , 5 , ' , .
