444 444444 444444444 The Forty-Niners One hundred years ago many a hardy adventurer was packing nis gear, preparing to take part in the great gold rush of 1849. Now, 100 years later, we of the class of '49 are busy packing our gear to participate in another great rush. We will find as much peril and adventure as our ancestorsl did in 1849. Not many of us will find gold in our search, but gold is subordinate to something far more satisfying and lasting-perfection. We will have to dig hard and deep for that, too, but we have spent our schooldays arming ourselves with the implements We will need. The pioneers of 1849 were never so well equipped. The traveler of 1849 had to trust to chance on his journey through the wilderness, he had no map to help him. In school we have plotted our maps, carefully eliminating the detours. Each day saw a clarity added to it that any '49er will find easy to follow. 'Our Leader-God . . . The pioneer of 1849 had no leader, no guide, except the eager beckoning of fame and fortune. He soon found that this fickle guide too often misled him. We have found a far more dependable Guide - God. Our Aim-Perfection. Our financiers , the administration, have taught us the value of perfection, and what is more, how to dis- tinguish it from the fool's gold which so often led the pioneer to his destruction. Too late the poor prospector discovered his prized strike was only a piece of worthless yellow rock. Let us hope we have learn- ed to recognize the genuine, always. We the prospectors of 1949 owe much to our counterparts of 18495 they have given us an example of initiative and perseverance which will help us immensely. Surely, with our maps, our equipment, and such an excellent Guide, our mission will terminate in a success far above the successes of any '49er. 444444444444444444
