THEME PlONEERS The spirit of Pioneering always prevades the initial years of an institution's establishment such as that of Mountlake College. Every movement is an .unmarked and untrodden ter- ritory. At every turn there is a new surprise or a challenge. River crossings have to be discovered, mountain passes located. The going is rough and sacrifices have to be made. Modern conveniences and facilities normally considered as absolutely essential are forgotten at the moment in view of greater opportunities in the future. A resolute determination to blaze new trails and open new territories is the directing factor for those who have caught the vision of the pioneer. The Pioneer is an adventurer, he is also a history maker. l-le loves and appreciates the present in view of the future. The promise of tomorrow satisfies his heart today and so he presses forward, claiming new ground and building well for those who will come after him . The students , faculty, and staff of Mountlake College are Pioneers in an academic world. Through their united in- terest and effort a new college has been succes sfully launched. The hope that has inspired them is the future training of such who wish to live for Christ victoriously and serve Him successfully. Much has already been accom- plished, but more remains to be done. Thus, with confidence that a great future lies ahead for Mountlake, its Pioneers will move forward in faith to build strongly and well an in- heritance for those who will follow in the paths they are now blazing. 4

DEDICATION We would like to dedicate this book to the man who has done much to make this school possible. A man with a vision of missions? Yes, by his own ad- mission he is a missionary himself and is in the process of training young men and women for the mission field. A man with a vision for education? Yes , he is an educa- tor and is working to train people in this very needed field. Born in Australia and coming to the United States from his home in 1952 , he has worked very hard to see Mountlake College come into being. Thus we would like to dedicate the first edition of the Pinion to Dr. A. Lyall Lush. 6
