BASKETBALL The 1950 1951 basketball season proved to be very successful Durlng the regular season the team chalked up f1fteen VICIOIICS against tvuo losses Vlndom, once aga1n the stumbllng block, was respons1b1e for the two defeats The h15.ll12ht of the season was the flrst game of the DISIIICI Tourney 1n whlch we played 1X1ndom Smce they had defeated us twlce, they were highly favored to vun the 1-JISIIICI crown ll never, Munson s Men d1dn't l1sten to the predlctlons for they upset Vmdom 41 59 Nlaynard Meyers and FYWIH llelde teamed up w1th two qulck baskets 1n the closing seconds of the game to give us the vlctory The team went on to w1n the tourney by defeatlng Butterfreld 59 38 and jackson S2 33 In the Reglonal Tournament the Lakers drew llkorthxngton as the1r f1fSI opponent Both teams were v1ct1ms of the litters and the game turned out to be a defensxxe contest The Lakers led most of the game and held a 28 23 margin when the flnal gun went off A snappy Sherburne team prov1ded the opposltlon 1n the f1nal game of the Reg1onal The Lakers defense and reboundxng ab1l1ty proved too much for Sherburne as the Lakers won 33 24 The team s f1rst opponent In the State Tournament was St Paul Monroe After havmg a sub- stant1al lead throughout most of the game the Lakers found the score deadlocked at 46 46 w1th one second rema1n1ng 1n the game Lee Loewen turned out to be the man of the hour as he calmly stepped up to the free throw llne and made the shot wh1ch won the game The next game pltted the Lakers agamst G1lbert now the heavy favorlte to wm the tournament The Lakers made a heroxc effort and once agam held a good Slzed margm durmg the game but th1s t1me ll couldn t be kept, as G11bert defeated the team 46 44 G1lbert's b1g B111 S1m1nov1tch was held to four free throws after racklng up 35 pomts the n1ght before agalnst Austln The sharpshootmg of the rest of the1r team enabled them to defeat the Lakers Th1s made lt the fourth t1me ln four State T0urneys that Mountam Lake has been el1m1nated from the competrtlon by the State Cnampmn The f1nal game that the Lakers played found them losmg to Braxnerd ln a hard fought contest Th1s gave the Lakers fourth place 1n the state Alden Stoesz was selected to be on the All State Team for h1s excellent vs wrk 1n t e three games Only three of the f1rst ten men are SCDIOIS, so we may look forward to an even better season next year BSQUAD The B team had a successful season v.1nn1ng 9 and loslng 7 It cons1sted of sophomores and freshmen who had llttle experxence but made up for ll wlth a terr1f1c Wlll to w1n Flve of the seven losses were of a marg1n of three or less po1nts Three games ln a row, jackson,Worth1ngton, and St james, were lost by one pomt and the Worthmgton and St ames games were lost 1n overt1me perlods ackson lk L Vlorthmgton St ames jackson P1pestone Vlmdom Slayton Lakef1eld Vkestbrook Luverne St james Butterfreld V estbrook Marshall Tracy 5 X1 lndom Xl 1ndom Butterfleld ack son RLGIONAL T01 RN!
