SOCIAL SCIENCE Social Science classes are offered primarily to help Students develop an understanding of them- selves and the society in which they live, to pre- pare them to take their places as intelligent and worthy citizens in that society. A concentrated study of American history and world history helps the student gain a knowledge of the background of society and the contributions that great men of the past have made. Social living is a new subject offered this year to give senior high students the opportunity to study and discuss subjects usually classified as sociology anthropology, psychology, problems of democracy, American government, and economics. Mrs. Pete Shiras is the teacher. Civics, taught by Mrs. Ella Pierce, stresses the organization ofthe local, state and national govern- ment, and emphasizes the proper conduct ofgood citizens. Psychology helps students understand their men- tal and emotional make-up. Journalism is offeredas an elective in English or Social Science, since it stresses not only correct writing habits, but also the social science aspects of journalism. Vocabulary enlarge- ment, students' errors inusage and spellingpffective sentence structure, and writing and speech activities are included in the units of work. Read- ing material offers an introduction to the types of literature. Emphasis in English lll is plac- ed on effective speaking and writing, using American literature as a back- groundfor study. InEnglish 1V em phasis is centered in the classics of literature, with development of po- lish in speaking and writing techni- ques. At the right are Dean Ricke and Deanne Choate tape recording in an English ll class. Ti, The library is used constantly every period of the day. It con- tains approximately l35O books. In addition, the State Library in Little Rock sends the high school library 2 3 5 books each year. There are reference books, edu- cationalbooks, fiction, non-fict- ion books, magazines, and news- papers in the library this year. Mary Jones resigned during the year. This class is for freshmen. The agri. ll students dwelled on live stock and field crops, while the agri. 1V class stud- ied farm management and field CFOPS- The agri. ll and lV boys also had wood-working projects. They made articles such as cedar chests, book cases, bulletin boards for the high school classrooms, magazine racks, and many other various articles. At the left below are David Benedict and Billy Hensley turning their arts and skills into making a cedar chest. Below is the agri. lV class with Mr, Sharp, their instructor, working on their project record books. FFA has 44 members this year. Their prize-winning hogs paid for the Father and Son Banquet this year which was held in March. Officers of the club are: President, Dwain Hawkins,Vice-president, James Bryantg Secretary, David Benedict, Treasurer, Sammy Beckg Reporter, Milton Dahlke gParlimentarian, Robert Dahlkeg and Sentinel, Curtis Brooks.
