A Time For Every Purpose As Managing Editor of the 1988 Salesian, | have viewed this school through eyes unique to me. | have been challenged to represent Mount de Sales — its realities, and its ideals. Questions have been posed and decisions have been made con- cerning how to portray the year’s events so that they are more than mere depictions. Each photograph and each caption captures a range of emotions, emotions that are meant to color our high school years. High school memories are pro- duced by involvement in school ac- tivities. Being part of any high school athletic team or academic team means working together toward a goal, learning about each other in the process, and accepting the re- sults, whether or not they are suc- cesful. Losing is as much a part of belonging to a group as is winning. Along with my senior classmates, | was disappointed when our foot- ball team finished in a last-place tie in the region. Even further, | was heartbroken when our varsity boys basketball team lost yet another game at the state championship tournament. Even though it didn’t provide much consolation at the time, if looked at from another per- spective, these losses can be seen as having had a purpose. Losses, and wins, are learning experiences from which we gain integrity and strength. This philosophy characterizes the academic scene, too. Despite the significance of grades, knowl- edge is more than what we learn in classrooms. Knowledge comes from experience inside and outside of class. When you get right down to it, NO one is going to remember who got what grade in Physics. More im- portantly, perserverance makes the difference in what we gain from life. If academics, athletics and ac- tivities constitute our school, what makes Mount de Sales special? What motivates us to participate in activi- ties, to go beyond academic con- cerns to the broader concerns that affect us all? A certain atmosphere exists at MDS, resulting from a com- bination of academics, athletics, ac- tivities and worship. Our school days begin with prayer, a powerful blessing for all of us each day. We pray to God for safety and for guid- ance. Even further, we asked for God’s blessing on Moving-Up Day, as we prepared for the responsibili- ties of the upcoming year. The spirit that characterizes the campus and the concern we have for others is witnessed in the way we collect gifts and food for the needy. We have gained a generous spirit at MDS, one which has compelled us to donate to Covenant House and to support our school through the tough times. As a student at a small school | have gotten to know much of the student body. As asenior, however, the ‘‘best years of my life,”’ my high school years, are about to end. | will face a new world, one where | do not know as many people. Conse- quently, the freshman firsts are giv- ing way to the senior lasts — pep rally, football game, basketball game, baseball game, cheer, Mass, day in high school. Our comfortable senior positions — those waited for all those years — will be replaced with nervous freshman positions at college. The Salesian is an experience for those who allow themselves to remember high school with their hearts as well as their heads. The spirit that envelops the campus per- meates this yearbook in a way that bonds us together as Cavaliers, and together we have learned that there is a time for every purpose under the heavens. Love, Baym Editor's Message 13
