WHEL Tl alesian One life Fulfilled In the end, itis just about impos- sible to express what it meant to Mount de Sales that Sister Mary Fi- delis Barragan, R.S.M. was its princi- pal for 17% years. To make a simple list of the changes that occurred at our school would be to trivialize them, and to oversimplify the chal- lenges that were met, and the vision of the future which Sister Fidelis saw so clearly. Sister Fidelis came to Mt. de Sales on June 1, 1970 to teach En- glish, and became principal within a year. Sister came to MDS in the same year when many members of the Class of 1988 were born; when she announced her resignation on Janu- ary 9, 1987, Sister Fidelis had been at MDS longer than she had been in any one place since graduating from St. Vincent's in Savannah and enter- ing the Sisters of Mercy. In the years before she came to Mt. de Sales, Sister had had assign- ments in Pensacola, Savannah, Mo- bile and Baltimore. She arrived at MDS just in time for the 1970's, a de- cade in which ten other private schools opened in Bibb County. In that decade, the MDS student body continued to grow despite the fact that there were many more private schools that were available to par- ents who chose private education for their children. A few simple statistics illustrate the changes that have occurred at MDS since Sister Fidelis became principal. The student body has grown in size from 323 to 540. The senior class has more than doubled in size. Minority students now make up 14% of our student body; in 1970, minority students accounted for only 2% of the total enrollment. In 1970, 63% of the student body was Catholic; today more than half our students are of other faiths, making MDS a school of diversity un- matched in Bibb County. When Sister Fidelis first came to MDS, there were 10 Sisters of Mercy on the faculty, where today there are only three. This is one of the greatest challenges that confronted Sister: how to take MDS from a time when the faculty was predominant- ly religious to a time when lay teach- ers would predominate. To those who were accustomed to the pres- ence of Sisters in the classrooms, this was a major change! One of the least understood aspects of this change in faculty is the fact that tu- ition has had to increase in order to make up for the loss of donated ser- vices of those Sisters of Mercy who used to teach at MDS. In these 17 years, Mt. de Sales attracted a tal- ented and devoted faculty. Ten of our Current teachers have been on the staff for ten years or more, and 61% of the faculty have earned Master’s Degrees. Mt. de Sales has moved to meet the challenges that have accompa- nied a changing educational atmo- sphere in Bibb County. First, an 8th grade was established in 1974 in re- sponse to a public school decision to end their elementary programs after grade 7. Again this year MDS moved to meet its future by estab- lishing a 7th grade and incorporating it into a fully self-contained Middle School. These things sound simple enough, but they are evidence of the rigorous demands of a changing educational environment, and MDS has adapted and grown by moving to meet those changes, instead of waiting for them to pass by. Sister Fidelis’ leadership in this period of growth was instrumental. One of greatest challenges Sis- ter Fidelis faced when becoming our principal was the need to restruc- ture our religion curriculum. As she noted in her final Administrator’s Re- port, students in 1970 had a “negative attitude ... toward their daily religion classes, an attitude re- flective of the rebellious 60’s.’’ Also, “religion faculty ... wanted to teach courses in the new spirit of Vatican II,” @ spirit Of Openness and candor, in which the Church (in the words of Pope John XXIiIl) “threw open the windows and let in the fresh air of the 20th cen- tury.” These real concerns were met with a new religion curriculum, stressing individual spirituality that would be “tangibly present on our campus and personally treasured by students and faculty.’’ Religion classes are now en- joyed by more students than ever, and the regular and frequent opportunities for prayer and worship on campus strengthened the primary mission of Mt. de Sales as a Catholic school. A recent graduate described the special spiritual atmosphere of MDS when he wrote of the ‘‘constant presence of God on cam- pus.”’ Today, MDS students better appre- ciate the opportunities afforded in this Mercy school, for growth and comfort. In that sense, religion is more important to us than ever before. That challenge, too, has been successfully met. The Mt. de Sales campus has un- dergone a dramatic change during Sister’s tenure. De Sales Hall, Burke Hall, Rose Place and the Middle School - all these facilities have come into use. Property near the campus has been purchased, to meet future needs, which are not yet specific. This campus expansion is all part of a program of develop- ment that Sister Fidelis began in 1978. The focus of our development program is to identify those sources of support - support of all kinds, not just financial - that can help assure that MDS can move into the future with confidence. The Development Program has had a strong beginning under Sister’s guidance, and it is this lifeline to our future that represents another challenge successfully met. Sister Fidelis helped MDS to meet these challenges, but she has left her mark here in other ways as well. Sister wanted our school to have an atmosphere consisting of academics, athletics and the arts. Our mixed chorus is an excellent ex- ample of the dedication that Sister feels for the arts, and her determina- Sister said goodbye to many of her friends at Can- dielight Carol service and to the student body on December 18th tion that our students have the chance to develop an appreciation for the arts in their years here. Sister recalls that ‘‘in the traditions of Mt. de Sales, the arts were significantly important to the educated young lady.’’ Her efforts to revive the arts at MDS have begun to be appreciat- ed. Much changed during those 17% years. They occurred during Sister Fidelis’ tenure, and were ac- complished with the help and coop- eration of parents, teachers, friends and students. Sister led MDS, com- bining her insight and energy with the talents and enthusiasm of others, to produce an institution characterized by an attitude of ex- cellence. In accomplishing this mis- sion, Sister earned for herself the re- ward promised by the prophet Dan- iel: Those who instruct others to jus- tice will shine like stars for all eternity. A development officer is a versatile personality who performs many different tasks. He is an ambas- sador, a negotiator, an interpreter, a salesman, 4 planner, a researcher, a juggler, and a person with a good sense of humor and balance. A successful development program depends upon good communication between the school and all of its interested parties. Development attracts friends, promotes the school’s mission and goals, speaks about our talents, and nurtures the dialogue between the school and all whom it serves. Development requires a long-term effort and the involvement of many people. It demands pas- sion, dedication and energy, and | am looking for- ward to the challenge. Questions have been posed and decisions have been made con- cerning how to portray the year’s events so that they are more than mere depictions. Each photograph and each caption captures a range of emotions, emotions that are meant to color our high school years. High school memories are pro- duced by involvement in school ac- tivities. Being part of any high school athletic team or academic team means working together toward a goal, learning about each other in the process, and accepting the re- sults, whether or not they are suc- cesful. Losing is as much a part of belonging to a group as is winning. Along with my senior classmates, | was disappointed when our foot- ball team finished in a last-place tie in the region. Even further, | was heartbroken when our varsity boys basketball team lost yet another game at the state championship tournament. Even though it didn’t provide much consolation at the time, if looked at from another per- spective, these losses can be seen as having had a purpose. Losses, and wins, are learning experiences from which we gain integrity and strength. This philosophy characterizes the academic scene, too. Despite the significance of grades, knowl- edge is more than what we learn in classrooms. Knowledge comes from experience inside and outside of class. When you get right down to it, NO one is going to remember who got what grade in Physics. More im- portantly, perserverance makes the difference in what we gain from life. If academics, athletics and ac- tivities constitute our school, what makes Mount de Sales special? What motivates us to participate in activi- ties, to go beyond academic con- cerns to the broader concerns that affect us all? A certain atmosphere exists at MDS, resulting from a com- bination of academics, athletics, ac- tivities and worship. Our school days begin with prayer, a powerful blessing for all of us each day. We pray to God for safety and for guid- ance. Even further, we asked for God’s blessing on Moving-Up Day, as we prepared for the responsibili- ties of the upcoming year. The spirit that characterizes the campus and the concern we have for others is witnessed in the way we collect gifts and food for the needy. We have gained a generous spirit at MDS, one which has compelled us to donate to Covenant House and to support our school through the tough times. As a student at a small school | have gotten to know much of the student body. As asenior, however, the ‘‘best years of my life,”’ my high school years, are about to end. | will face a new world, one where | do not know as many people. Conse- quently, the freshman firsts are giv- ing way to the senior lasts — pep rally, football game, basketball game, baseball game, cheer, Mass, day in high school. Our comfortable senior positions — those waited for all those years — will be replaced with nervous freshman positions at college. The Salesian is an experience for those who allow themselves to remember high school with their hearts as well as their heads. The spirit that envelops the campus per- meates this yearbook in a way that bonds us together as Cavaliers, and together we have learned that there is a time for every purpose under the heavens. Love, Baym Editor's Message 13 Aaministration § =f - = The Mt. de Sales Board of Trustees. Seated: Sister Mary Rosina Bayliss, R.S.M. and Sister Mary Fidelis Barragan, R.S.M. Standing: Dr. Norman J. Smith, Mr. Chester Pierce, Mrs. Connie Thuente, Mr. Chris Rouse, Mr. David Zuver, Sister Santa Maria D'Angelo, Reverend William Hurdle, Mr. Wayne Downs, Dr. Bobby Jones, Mrs. Jan Manning, Mrs. Pat Robinson, Mr. Dan Dun- wody (Chairman), Monsignor Marvin LeFrois. MDS was very fortunate to have two Sisters of Mercy as Principal this year. Sister Mary Rosina, R.S.M. became our Principal January 1st, succeeding Sister Mary Fidelis, R.S.M., who resigned at the end of the first semester, and is now preparing for a new care at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta. Mr. Chester Pierce (right) graduated from MDS in 1966 and returned to his alma mater in 1973. He is our Assistant Principal and Financial Manager. Over the past few years, the costs of operating our school have increased and the methods of managing the school’s finances have become much more sophisticat- ed. Mr. Pierce is responsible for the day-to-day financial operations at Mt. de Sales. Prior to becoming Assistant Principal, Mr. Pierce taught Social Studies, and has coached football, base- ball and softball for the past several years. Mr. Jim Ray (left) became our full-time guidance counselor in 1981, after several years of teaching social studies and directing our drama ensemble. Under his leadership, our Guidance Department has moved ahead to keep up with the demand for help with college admissions, career counselling and financial aid assistance. The College and Career Center, opened in 1984, is computer-equipped with more than a dozen software programs dealing with study skills, test prepa- ration, personal interests, career inventories, and college exploration. All of these improvements are visible evidence of Mr. Ray’s determination to help every MDS student get the best guidance possible. Administration 17 1 Sister Grace Marie Dillard, R.S.M. As | leave eigh- teen years of teaching at MDS, | want to pay a special tribute to all those persons who have, over the years, made me laugh! In Sr. Rosina’s office there is a delightful picture of a circus clown. A modern writer and philosopher, Henri Nouen, has said that, ‘“‘the clowns show us by their ‘useless’ behavior, not simply that many of our preoccupations, worries, tensions, and anxieties need a smile, but more importantly, that we, too, have white on our faces and that we, too, are called to clown a little.” | have discovered some very beautiful clowns at MDS — among students and faculty — clowns who have not taken themselves too seri- ously; who have been willing to make fools of themselves for the amusement of others. What trea- sures these people are! So, as a farewell and a thank you to MDS — its students, staff, and administration — | want to re- call all those class clowns that | have loved — the entertainers — the Steve Martins, the Elvis impersona- tors, the dancers, the Tweedle Dums and Tweedle Dees; the Professor Higgins and Col. Pickerings; the mu- sicians, those who took “suppository writing’; Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Seven Dwarfs, the Mouseketeers, the Diz- zy Izzies; the classroom artists; the joke tellers; the actors; the spinners of yarns about “‘why-l|-didn’t-do- my-homework”’! All of you have helped my too serious self to be revitalized and eternally grateful. Good Bless You. . Cheerleading 95 A Time For Remembering Now that these annuals are fi- nally here, we are overpowered by a sense of “‘instant nostalgia’, as we recall the tapestry of events that make up our years at Mt. de Sales. Our first day at our new school was Orientation Day, August 17, 1984, and we learned which doors could be used, and which side of the halls to walk on. Sister Fidelis taught us how to sing the Fight Song (and how to clap in time). We also learned how to sing our prayers. Three boys in our class - David Prati, Brian Rubin and Stan Stanley - earned a distinction that will live for- ever, as the first students to ever drop a television set while returning it to the liorary. We became the only class in memory to have four English teachers in one year - Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Peery, Mr. Vullo, and Mrs. Clax- ton. Does anyone remember the book report we had to write for Sis- ter Fidelis? We had the same kind of entu- siasm as every freshman class. We won Homecoming and Fun Night; with our classmates we watched in dismay as our boys basketball team played for the State Championship and lost to Savannah Christian. By one point. In our sophomore year, we dis- sected frogs, crayfish, earthworms, starfish and even conducted blood tests to determine our own blood types. It was in that year, too, that our Debate team went to Harvard. Not only did MDS flourish academi- cally, but athletically, too - it was the first year for varsity soccer, and our first team advanced to the state championship tournament, finishing 98 Senior Essay in third place. Our softball team won the state championship, the first state championship of any kind for girls athletics at MDS. These teams, and all of our others, were cheered on by our new pep club. Though we prided ourselves on our accom- plishments, that year will always be remembered as the year of the space shuttle disaster. Do you re- member what class you were in when Sister Fidelis made that an- nouncement of the explosion, and that everyone aboard had died? August 1986, and we were upperclassmen at last, free to spend our study halls, outside. In Washing- ton, we became aware of a major scandal, and we first heard the names that have since become fa- miliar - Oliver North, John Poindex- ter, William Casey, and Richard Sec- ord. Closer to home, our boys bas- ketball team had a perfect season, until the first round of the state tour- nament. We had the pleasure of working with Mr. McLachlan, Mrs. Fry, Mrs. Weston, and Mrs. Peery on Junior-Senior Prom, ‘‘An Evening in Paradise.’” Our new chorus enter- tained us, and Tina Valdecanas be- came the first junior to take Foreign Relations - EVER! Changes took place in our junior year, too. Our Deacon, Mr. Hutnick, went as a missionary to Micronesia. Sister Pat went to Sa- vannah to teach at St. Vincent’s, and Sister Fidelis announced her resigna- tion. But the biggest change of all was that we became seniors. The theme of our Moving-Up Day was expressed when we sang: Lean on me, When you're not strong, And I'll be your friend. l'll help y ou carry on. And then we were seniors. As we walked onto the campus for our final year, we found a new middle school, and a new name for MDS - “Academy”. To our delight, we found that Mrs. Tate was our English teacher, for the second time in three years. At least we didn’t have to break in a new English teacher! Do your remember when Mark Hughes was reincarnated as Brian Martin during Homecoming Week? Homecoming was great, and we had some terrific pep rallies, but our football team struggled through a difficult season, one in which they did not achieve what they wanted. As the year came to a close, it became known as the year of couples. Jim and Tammy Bakker, Gary Hart and Donna Rice, and Oli- ver North and Fawn Halil all became symbols of a year of scandals. In this same year, many new words be- came fixed in our vocabulary. We learned the meanings of ary, dweeb, floyd, bearded and shick- ed. We also learned new memory techniques (from Mr. Jerry Lucas), and we hoped against hope that we could learn Physics and Foreign Re- lations by making pictures! It was a year when a bomb threat forced evacuation o f the school. Fortunately for us, it oc- curred on December 8th, so we went to Saint Joseph’s Church for a combination bomb shelter and Mass celebrating the feast of the Immacu- late Conception. Then in January, two days of snow and ice locked us into a frozen tundra. And now the year has come to an end. It was best captured for us by Ivan Allen: | won't be afraid, | won't shed @ tear, Just as long as you Stand by me. Michael Clark Kathy Harings In our Homecoming skit, Paul Ciaccia emerged from... .. The earth rev- olves around the sun, giving us the changing of the seasons, with their reminders of the cycles of life. We learn to adjust our lives and our ac- tivities from day to night, and through spring, summer, fall and winter. But there is never a time when truth is out of season. Yet the world around us can certainly offer us some bewildering varieties of the truth. the last word Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North told the ‘‘truth’’ about the Iran-Con- tra affair before the Congress in July, and his version of the ‘‘truth’’ dif- fered remarkably from what others had said about the same events. Gary Hart told the “truth” about his relationship with Donna Rice, then retold the same ‘‘truth’”’ at least twice in different settings. Jim and Tammy Bakker told the “truth’’ about Jim Bakker’s relation- ship with Jessica Hahn; the seamy underside of the Bakker’s feud with Jerry Falwell soon dominated the nation’s consciousness, and we were left to decide what the “‘truth”’ of that whole affair was. Many times over the past year, we have been required to choose between different versions of the truth, as though it were a commodi- ty offered for sale in the market- place of ideas. Since the dawn of time, man- kind has searched for the truth. That search has led to discoveries great and small; to mathematical truths which are certifiably ‘‘true’’; to the gifts of science which allow us to appreciate the universe in which we live; to the beauties of the arts, which ennoble us and give us pause to enjoy the “truth” which ex- presses itself in the hearts of men. So what have you learned here on this old campus with its traditions and its permanence? | hope that you have learned the simplest truth, which is at the same time the most profound. That truth is that the Kingdom of God is here for us all, in the person of Jesus Christ, who spoke the truth as it has never been sp oken before or since. The truth that Jesus spoke of was difficult for His Apostles to un- derstand, at first. They struggled with the concepts that He taught them, as we struggle with them even today. What are the meanings of heaven, sin, salvation, grace, and obedience? The answers to every question that we can pose are contained in the simple truth that He left us. The Apostle John left it to us in his first Epistle: Let us love in deed and in truth, and not merely talk about it. This is our way of knowing that we are commit- ted to the truth and are at peace with Him. Go in peace, then, committed to the truth, knowing that the will of God will never lead you where the grace of God will not keep you. -KD Tom Abell The Ach Family The Frank Allen Family Mr. and Mrs. Bob Anderson Jimmy and Susie Anderson The Asbell Family Missy Asbell Patty and Fred Baker Angie Balkom Susan Ball Royce, Beth and Betsy Barker Dan and Anne Barrett Tim and Terry Barrett Annette J.
