The closest translation we can come up with is ‘of de Sales’, meaning that our yearbook is named in honor of the patron saint of our school, St. Francis de Sales. It then occured to us that many MDS students might be unfamiliar with St. Francis de Sales, Perhaps this brief explanation will be illuminating. - Steve and Angi) St. Francis de Sales was born in 1567, shortly after the Lutheran Reformation had torn the religious fabric of medieval =U] ce) ol-marVi(-1am o)-1181¢ Me) ger-lia(-10 Mm Ce) the priesthood, he worked dili- gently for the reunification of Catholics and Protestants. Through devotion your family cares become more peaceful ... the service we owe to the prince becomes more faithful, and our work, no matter what it is, becomes more pleasant and agreeable. “Therefore, in whatever situation we happen to be, we can and must aspire to the life of perfection.” 2 St. Francis de Sales 4 i a| | i of i = - an eed emer The priests of the Macon Warner Robins area concelebrated at the Mass of the Holy Spirit, the traditional beginning of the school year. Hurdle Dear Seniors: 1968 - the year many of you were born - was the year that | returned to Macon as a teacher. The MDS | remembered from my high school days was quite different from the campus of the late sixties! No longer was de Sales an all - white, all - girls school with an all religious faculty. Somewhere during the years of my absence, someone with great wisdom had met the challenge to change to aco - ed, racially mixed student body, with lay men and women teaching side by side with the sisters. (Those first lay teachers must have had tremen- dous challenges to gain the respect and profes- sional acceptance of both students and parents!) How truly blessed we all are because of the foresight and courage of those who struggled with the problems of the sixties and seventies! Now, 1986 - the year of the 110th graduating class of Mt. de Sales! You, too, have seen and met some significant challenges. During these past four years, | have particularly noticed the changes in the dress code. (You coped with the ‘‘ins’’ and “outs” of the tailored look with great aplomb.) And, you got to class on time without the aid of bells, and to Hamlet Hall in spite of the rain and the mismatched stepping stones! You mastered the computer language; began a varsity soccer team, won the first girls’ state championship in softball; revived the debate team; eliminated the need for ‘‘pink slips’’; started a Pep Club and Band; and, “‘. . . since brevity is the soul of wit, | will be brief!’’ (| am not sure that you mastered Shakespeare, but you did give it a good try!) The list could go on and on. The challenges were there and you met them. Now is the time for you to get ‘back to the future.’’ During these school years, even though you are the NOW generation, you have been living in the past. Your history classes, no matter how contemporary; your literature courses, no matter how modern; your math and science curriculum, no matter how new — are always old. By the time you come to study even the most recent subjects which education can offer, they are already dated. So, you must quickly get BACK TO THE FUTURE — get on with your lives. Yet, in a very real sense, ‘‘... we are a part of all that we have met.’ (Tennyson) The friends, the faculty, the ‘Happy Days,”’ the fun nights, are all a part of our past now, the past which we can remember together. MDS can say of you, as we can say to one another: “‘l will not forget you ... | have carved you on the palm of my hand.” (Isaiah 49:15) MDS was given, and it met a challenge of the past; the Class of 1986 has met their challenges of the present; all of us must meet and conquer the challenges that lie ahead in the future. The ultimate test of how successful we all are in the great challenge called life will come in the far, far distant future. St. Augustine once said, ‘‘O Beauty even ancient, ever new ... Our hearts are ever restless until they rest in You.’’ So, be determined to meet the challenges life may bring to each of you with the same enthusiasm, the same faith, hope and love that you exhibited here at MDS. You are special, and you are loved! 20 Faculty 1 Sister Mary Fidelis, R. S. M. They motivate us to excellence; they stimulate us to overcome; they enable us to grow. They are an integral part of our existence. Without them, we would remain constant, doomed to a life of stagnation. In my personal experience at Mt. de Sales, | have been constantly challenged - by the society from which | come, by the circumstances of my days here, and especially by these faculty members. By being challenged in this traditional environment, | know that | have become more prepared for the challenges | will face on my own. Indeed, | have been challenged in many ways. | have been intellectually challenged. My teachers have led me to examine my own way of thinking, to strengthen my grasp of history and mathematics, to learn how to express myself. They have shown me great people - Descartes, Shakespeare, Lincoln, Christ - and their gifts to posterity, and have asked me to analyze those gifts and their meaning to me. | have been physically challenged. Through P.E., intramurals, and participa- tion in a varsity sport, | have kept myself healthy and fit. | have been emotionally challenged. How many of us have not felt the sting of a crucial football defeat, the pride of singing the alma mater, or the aching emptiness of a relationship gone sour! MDS has provided me with a refuge from the troubles and worries of being a teenager, through the kindness and interest of teachers and the constant presence of God on campus. | have been spiritually challenged. | have come to know the power and beauty of the Catholic church. | have found comfort in the Mass; it has helped me to strengthen my religious beliefs. | have been challenged in all these ways, and many more. Now comes the greatest challenge of all - the challenge of life itself - and in facing that challenge all of us will appreciate the gifts of these men and women who have taught us and helped to form us. As a class, we have faced all of these challenges together, and that common experience has left us confident, for we know that we have been well prepared. Throughout the rest of our lives, we will carry Mount de Sales’ gift to us. And we will succeed. Faculty 31 We've met the challenges that awaited us when these photographs were taken... At the Wiregrass SEAIS Tournament in November, both varsity and novice debaters competed, and brought home several awards, both team and individual. On the varsity level, Kelly Hamlin and Tina Valdecanas were the first place affirmative team, and Michael Dunaway and Alan Taylor were the second place negative team. Alan Taylor was the First Place Speaker, and David Bothe was the Fifth Place Speaker. Novice debaters Joyce Balcos and Doris Lee were the 3rd place affirmative team, and Paige Anderson and Mary Catherine Johnson were the 4th place affirmative team. Donald Bush was the 5th place speaker. The season reached its peak when the Cavalier debaters accepted an invitation to participate in Harvard University’s national debate tournament. Our girls steamrolled through the regular season, and swept through the region tournament, earning a trip to the state championship tourna- ment in Tifton. The Lady Cavaliers had come home disappointed from that tournament in the past, but not in 1985. With the enthusiastic support of parents and friends who had followed them all season, they defeated St. Vincent's of Savannah —ee 15 - 4 to earn the State Championship. tration: elements of a champion- They were an exuberant and talented group i aiaaiai who gave us a season we'll all remember. ae Aid se 1 Sherry Williams won All-Region and All-State honors for the second consecutive year. 2 Brande Burgess’s defensive excellence at shortstop solidified the Lady Cavaliers in the field. 3 As the Lady Cavaliers dominated on the field, so they dominated the All-Region 3-AAA Team, placing nine players on the squad. Football 93 In many ways, the 1985 football season was reminiscent of recent seasons. Our boys won the region championship and advanced into the state playoffs, only to lose a heartbreaker; there was a victory over one big cross-town rival, and a loss to another; there was an embarassing loss early in the season, and a near-perfect performance when the region champion- ship was on the line. The rivals may have been the same, and we still played our home games at Henderson Stadium, and our coaching staff was still the same. But beyond the similari- ties to previous seasons, there were enough singular moments to ensure that the 1985 season will be remembered by those who witnessed it and those who participated. The Pep Band in the stands; the greater numbers on the field; the first TV broadcasts in our history - all of these were landmarks in a season of challenges and successes. These 6 Cavaliers were named to the All-Region Team (seated); Jeff McCallie and Mark Freville. Standing: Chris Blue, Robert Sanders, Thaddus Anderson, and Bill Hull. visiTOR Te vOS. 70 60 36. MDS has always had excellent soccer players in its student body, but this year for the first time, they were afforded the opportunity of competing for their school. The team began workouts in late summer under the leadership of a fine group of volunteer coaches, headed by John Dattillo, and entered the season in September. They finished with an 8-4 record, and advanced to the state championship tournament on Jekyll Island, finish- ing third overall. It was an outstand- ing achievement for a first year team, and with a nucleus of fine under- classmen returning, the future of MDS soccer is very bright! Troy Edwards hit this turnaround baseline jumper in an early-season victory over Windsor. Our boys basketball team began the season with a lot of unanswered questions. Gone were the seven key players who led the Cavaliers to the state championship game in 1984-85. If the Cavs were to be successful, it would be a challenge. The challenge was met and mastered, as MDS won the Region Championship and appeared in the state tournament for the 5th consecutive year. It was an odd year in many ways. The Cavaliers had not lost at home in two years, but this year lost twice at home, to Flint River and to Westfield. For the first time in many years, MDS was not a solid favorite to win the region tourna- ment. This year the region tournament was held at McAuley Hall, and the Cavalier “ponies” ran like thoroughbreds, avenging an earlier loss to Flint River, and then administering a thorough defeat to Westfield, 75-57. The team is young, talented, and now, experi- enced. Youth was served. (above left) With perfect form ‘ike this, David Prati led the Cavaliers in scoring and was chosen for the All-Region team; (above right) Colin Brown, breaking up a pass against Windsor, vas also chosen for the All-Region team; (ricnt) Yauun Pounds, who by season's end wes the Cavalier’s starting point guard, comnieted the trio of MDS players who earned All-Region honors. The 1985-86 Lady Cavaliers set a goal for themselves at the start of the season - a winning record - and with a final season record of 14-12, that goal was achieved. The team was dominated by sen- iors, many of whom had been varsity players since their sophomore sea- sons, and their experience and their familiarity with the coaching style of Sr. Pat Coward was reflected in the quality of their play. It wasn’t only that our girls won more games, it was the way those games were won that brought such excitement to players and fans alike. The season's high point was a 59- 57 victory over two-time state cham- pion Monroe, in their gym. Sherry Williams and Chanda Fow- ler made the All-Region team. The girls finished fourth in the region, with several competitive performances at the region championship meet. Tipa Jackson won the region championship in the 220-yard dash, and finished third in the state. Perhaps most encouraging about the 1985 season was the increased number of girls who participated.
