1985 salesian M D 5 1985 Salesian Mount de Sales High School Macon, Georgia Volume 30 IT’S GREAT TO BE A CAVALIER! qi = To be part of the Mt. de Sales student body is to experience a certain something, not easily defined, but a definite knowledge that we are all part of something very special. It begins with tradition. MDS has produced more than its share of champion- ship teams over the years, but the Cavalier spirit goes deeper than victories and region titles; it reaches into the heart, where the values of competition, honest effort, and valiant sportsmanship are formed. It is characterized by a positive attitude which does not easily accept defeat. It is demonstrated when we applaud our classmates for their achievements, when we turn out in the parking lot to send our softball team off to the state playoffs, and when we listen in silence when one of our own speaks of his love for MDS and its people. senior Superlatives Be Reggie Howard (left) and Alan Hill, recipients of commenda- tions from the National Achievement Association. Sometimes we forget who they are and why they were here. On these two pages are pictured those who were our friends and neighbors in 1984-1985. yy tk At the beginning of the Advent season, we attended an assembly which helped increase our awareness of the “holy days’’ which awaited us. On hand to speak were Reverend Roy Dial, pastor of Cross Keys United Methodist Church, Mrs. Carolyn Garvin, who chairs the MDS Religion Department, Father John Kenneally, pastor of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and Rabbi Ronald Goldstein of Temple Beth Israel. A longtim e friend of MDS, Father John Cuddy of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, is pictured here giving the traditional blessing to Shannon Powell of the Class of For the second year in a row, Sister Jeremy Daigler, R.S.M. visited MDS in her role as Vocations ‘85, on Moving-Up Day, 1984. Development - A Lifeline to the Future Since 1979, when the MDS Development Pro- gram was begun, the Board of Trustees has approved the purchase of several pieces of property adjacent to our campus. The pur- pose of these acquisitions is to provide future genera- tions of MDS students with enough space and facilities to continue our tradition of excellence. Since the program was begun, pieces of property have been purchased, two homes have been convert- ed to classrooms, and our campus has been expand- ed and beautified to better meet the needs of the MDS community. When Father John Cuddy (at right) comes to teach our seniors, he visits them in their own classroom building, Hamlet Hall. The building was purchased in September, 1983. Interior renovation and exterior beautification were performed during the summer of ‘84. Rose Place was purchased in September, 1980 and first dedicated to classroom use in August, 1983. Its small classrooms and quiet atmosphere make it perfect for religion classes; in fact, all of our sophomore religion students, and some of our juniors, have studied in Rose Place during the last two years. Pictured here in the “prayer room” are, left to right: Kim McDaniel, Mary Catherine Johnson, Alyse Eichin, and Cooper Cook. Mount de Sales continues to offer a superior education to the Catholic community of Macon and its environs, but if de Sales is to be able to do so into the future, her alumni, alumnae, and friends have a special role to play in securing the financial future of this important educational resource. The Annual Giving Campaign offers the means to accomplish these ends. If every de Sales graduate, and every friend of our school will participate by becoming an Annual Giver, our future will be secure for the next hundred years. Another first: For the first time ever, MDS has two students enrolled whose parents both graduated from Mt. de Sales. Pictured, left to right, are Mr. Bill Harris, '68, Shannon Harris, '89, and Stephanie Harris, '88. Not pictured is their mother, the former Sheila Lamb, '68. How many schools can claim that all the members of an entire family are present on its campus every day? Mt. de Sales can; the Garvin family has both parents on the faculty and all three sons in the student body. Dear Seniors: Looking back ... to the day when 38 of you entered Mt. de Sales in the 8th grade, | remember your sense of anticipation, of wonderment, of fear, and of joy. Since the prevailing spirit of a high school class is evident in its 8th graders, | look to them as indicators of things to come. Thus, | knew from their entrance in August, 1980, that we had a class more alive - the Class of '85. You elected Michael Garvin, John Griffin, and Cathy Bomberger to lead you that year and your class was known for strong academics and enthusiasm for your school as you out-yelled that big 9th grade ahead of you. Then came your 9th grade. You doubled in size and doubled in spirit. Never do | remember so much green evident on campus. (Maybe that's why we were inspired to change the external trim of our school from turquoise blue to forest green!) Your enthusiasm was contagious! | remember that this was the year of the Sesquicentennial celebration of the Sisters of Mercy. Mayor Israel proclaimed Mercy Day in Macon, September 24, 1981, in tribute to the years of dedication and caring that have characterized Mercy's presence here. The Heritage Room was opened containing photographs, narratives, and memorabilia telling the story of our first 100 years at MDS. Remember, we fielded our first soccer team this year. (They won their only game.) You elected Reggie Howard, Gwen Walton, Chris Edwards and Michael Garvin to lead your freshman class - and lead they did in an outstanding corporate effort. Many firsts were yours: first in the publications drive, first in Homecoming (with your cast of hundreds), first in pep rally spirit, first on fun night, first in the hearts of your teachers, and first to one another. | remember thinking: “Won't it be a good year when these are our senior leaders?” Remember your sophomore year? The year of the wise ones? Under the leadership of Michael Taylor, Reggie Howard, Kelly Clark, and Patrick Nuttall you had a memorable year. You still dominated the honor rolls with a larger percentage of sophomores on honors than any other class in the school. Father Bede retired and Mr. Chester Pierce became financial manager. Mr. Ray left classroom instruction and became full time guidance counselor. Drama produced Evita and Queens of France as two sophomores starred. DeSales sponsored its first Debate Team and seven of your classmates were important to its success in winning the region championship. My, we were proud, as was Sr. Grace Marie. Your service to the school was varied and extensive, including: 9 library assistants, 1 liturgical guitarist, 4 cheerleaders, 6 track runners, 4 tennis players (including 4-time state champion Laura Nelson), 2 golfers (including Low Medalist Lee Gerdes), 12 football players (7 varsity, 5 B-Team), 5 baseball players (1 varsity, 4 B-Team), 16 basketballers (2 girls, 14 boys), and the top fundraiser for Publications - Kevin Winn. In this 1982-83 school year, we thrilled with Princess Di and Prince Charles in the birth of Prince William, we grieved at the Tylenol tragedy, we viewed the final episode of M A S H, we boosted Herschel for the Heisman, and we watched as E.T. surpassed Star Wars at the box office. The year of wisdom! As you grew in wisdom, age and grace, your junior year dawned. Uppermost in your minds, | am sure, was the junior-senior prom and your major responsibility in executing this annual social highlight. You chose Reggie, Chris Edwards, Kelly and Michael Taylor to set your direction. This year, Mary Beth Carpenter was the top fundraiser for Publications, and we won region championships in softball, football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball, and drama (The Murder of Lidice). Our first competitive math team was strengthened by six juniors. You remember that two young Sisters of Mercy joined our faculty (one, Sister Pat, is still with us) and Mrs. Manning became important to you as school secretary. | remember your faces when you first viewed the new trapezoid sodded, planted, and beautiful. Rose Place became a classroom, computers abounded, and we went western at homecoming with the theme, ‘‘Homecoming on the Range.” All of this activity climaxed in the beauty of “New York, New York ; thanks to you, a splendid time was had by all. The year ended in late May when, at Mass on Moving-Up Day, your dream came true as you assumed the leadership of the school - our seniors. Appropriately, the theme of that Mass was “Growing Together for All to See. | said to you that day, and | repeat it to you today, ‘| have looked forward to the day when you would be our seniors for | have watched you grow to maturity in academics, in spiritual vision, and in dynamic school spirit.” Thus dawned your senior year, this year, one characterized by the smoothest beginning in recent times. With you as role models, with an expanded campus beautifully landscaped and an impressive wrought iron gate joining our two open, seated areas, with Hamlet Hall just for seniors, with Rose Place redecorated and utilized on a full time basis, with an expanded curriculum, we began this good year. | knew you liked the new open spaces on campus when | overheard one of you ask as you headed toward the gym for an assembly, ‘Can we cut through the gate?” Our three new faculty members, Sister Regina, Miss Carter, and Mr. Tony Pierce, were not completely new to us for they had been with us on a part-time basis last year, so they blended quickly with our dedicated, returning staff. With this kind of leadership, faculty and seniors, it was inevitable that 1984-1985 be extraordinary. Extraordinary - was Mercy Day, a day of joy and gratitude expressed by students to the Sisters of Mercy whom you honored in such nice ways: an inspiring Mass, words of petition to God for us, words of love spoken to each of us throughout the day; a pervading happiness umbrellaed the campus that day. I'll always remember it - your last Mercy Day with us. Extraordinary - Homecoming! Your slumber party skit presenting the candidates for queen was hilarious and well performed by 10 senior “hams”. The school tingled with excitement in competitions and in anticipation of the crowning of Queen Holly. Extraordinary - the Science Team, composed of four of your classmates and one junior, travelled to Americus and brought home the 1st place trophy, triumphing over all 30 schools present there. Extraordinary - Election Week. Remember the rally as Carl Joiner, Reggie Howard and Chris Kinnas challenged us all to consider the issues and to go to the polls. Was it the issues or the TV camera that charged us most? What spirit! Extraordinary - the last home football game. Remember the scoreboard, 31-0, MDS over Flint River. Remember the wonderful Sacred Heart School band - that big sound - with a halftime routine that paid double honor to our region champion senior softball and football players and their parents? Remember the card and towel routines of our new Pep Club, that Pep Club eminently successful because of your leadership and your membership? | will always be grateful to you and Mrs. Timms for this contribution to MDS. Extraordinary - our four returning debaters: Carl, Jennifer, Gautam, and Lewis, with their new Coach Tate. Extraordinary - the Thanksgiving Liturgy - so happy, so reverent. Remember? Father Cuddy said, “You were truly inspiring.” Extraordinary - the chosen editor of this yearbook, Chandler Park, who invited me to reminisce with you. Let us look back fondly, but only briefly, for we now turn our eyes to tomorrow. Life holds unique challenges and blessings for you. You are already blessed with intelligence and a good Catholic education; you are blessed with goodness and a generosity of grace; you are blessed with good health and an abundance of the fruits of the earth; you are blessed with personality and good friends; you are blessed with parents and teachers who love and support you as you face your tomorrows. We will always remember you affectionately. Our lives have changed in so many ways. We have grown physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. As our years at MDS come to an end, perhaps for a moment we can recall the vast amounts of knowledge and experience which we have learned. If we were to ask ourselves, ‘‘What have | learned; what have | gained in my years here,’’ the answer would be found in the hearts and minds of those dedicated and caring people who have taught us. It would be found in the personal sacrifices made by each, who so often go unthanked. It would be found in the words of the novelist Pat Conroy, who wrote of his own teachers in the best-selling novel, The Lords of Discipline: “Ordinary teachers do not touch me; the great ones never leave me. They ride with me during all my days, and | pass on to others what they have imparted to me. | exchange their handy gifts with strangers on trains, and | pretend that the gifts are mine . . . Great teachers encourage me to steal from them, and when | do, | know that they delight in my larceny.”’ Teachers, then, are gift-givers, and one of their gifts is knowledge. They have shown us the ancient myths of Greece, the tragedies of Shakespeare, the short stories of Poe and Twain. They have made us aware of the great analytical thinkers - Pythagorus, Descartes, Euclid - and they have shown us the simple beauty of circles, sizes and shapes. In their classes, we have glimpsed cells, molecules and atoms; we have come to know the great thinkers: Lincoln, Plato, Aquinas, and Darwin; Newton, Galileo, Copernicus, and Christ. We've received more from our teachers than just knowledge. We have learned the value of sacrifice. We have learned to accept responsibility for ourselves, our school, our work and the people we love. We have learned to respect others despite the differences which exist between us; we have learned that our way isn’t the only way. We have learned our own set of values; we have formed our own code of morality. And yet, there is even more that we've learned: to take pride and to rejoice in our victories, and to accept our defeats with dignity and grace, to make and keep friends, to love. As we leave MDS, we take these many gifts with us. We'll show them off, and take pride in them. And if we are wise, we will take these gifts and pass them on to others. In doing so, we will commemorate the unselfish men and women who first gave them to us. The festivities began on Monday, when our senior “hams” introduced the Queen candidates to the student body. Class banners, unfurled on Tuesday, admonished all interested parties that playing football with MDS was Risky Business. The highlight of the school week was Wednesday, when the annual dress-up competi- tion revealed some truly original creations. Salesian This is the 30th edition of the Sa esian, the annual publication of Mt. de Sales High School. The cover was conceived and designed by Mr. Dockrell, and originally drawn by Chandler Park. The cover was printed using a dual- element laser, on 80 point mortar-board. This cover process includes a special liquid plastic coating to prevent scratches and discoloration. Pages are bound into 16-page signatures, and are smyth-sewn, rounded and backed. The page material is 80 pound enamel, and the printing employs an ink-jet process for sharpness and clarity. The typeface used throughout is a sans serif style, Helvetica, and all four fonts are used: regular, italics, boldface, and bold italics.. Type sizes range from 6-point (used in panel captions) to 72-point (on the title and division pages). The Salesian was printed and assembled by Walsworth Publishing Company, located in Marceline, Missouri. For the fifth consecutive year, the Salesian was published by Kevin P. Dockrell. The Debate Team returned to active competition and fin- ished third in an extremely close region tournament in January. Individually, several dozen MDS students competed in school-wide competition — in spring, ‘84. In spoken, written and musical competition, they distinguished themselves as true Cavaliers. All of these members were inducted as juniors in April, 1984. Membership in National Honor Society is an honor extended to those students who display the virtues of Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. Each year, Mt. de Sales honors those few students who have consistently demon- strated these values, and who have distinguished themselves among their classmates. First chartered by the National Honor Society in 1952, Our Lady of Mercy chapter has inducted only those relative few who have consistently earned the highest honors. As such, membership in NHS is a highly valued accomplishment. Intramurals In 1983 the a ccrediting committee which certifies Mount de Sales every ten years indicated that the school needed an intramural program open to all students. It was felt that this kind of program would benefit those students who enjoy athletics but who do not compete in varsity or B-team sports. Our intramural program began this year, with touch football for boys and volleyball for girls. Competing in two divisions, one for 8th and 9th graders, and the other for sophomores, juniors and seniors, several dozen students participated. Intramurals were a great success! When we began summer practice last August, there was an absence of the usual spirit and confidence which accompanies MDS football. Through dedicated preparation, excellent coaching, and the team’s own self-confidence, we surprised our school, the city and state with a season-opening 19-6 victory over top-ranked First Presbyterian. The remainder of the season was very trying. We suffered many key injuries but we fought hard every week. It would have been easy to get down on ourselves and have gone through the season unmotivated, but our coaches taught us to keep our heads high, and be proud of what we do; And most importantly, never to give up on ourselves or each other. After a disappointing loss to region foe Brentwood, we pulled together and won three straight, culminating in a near-perfect game against Westfield. This victory was a major accomplishment for a small but scrappy bunch of Cavaliers. We were Region Champs - again. We have enjoyed our years playing together for MDS. We give our special thanks to our coaches for the lessons they have taught us that have better prepared us to face the challenges of life. But most importantly, we thank our teammates, especially fellow seniors, for the experiences we shared and will never forget. - Michael Garvin Michael Tayior These four Cavaliers were named to the All-Region Team (clockwise from bottom center): Robert Sanders, Boo McKelvey, Michael Taylor, and Michael Garvin. Robert Slocum, a coach for all seasons. 1984-85 will always be remembered as the year in which the MDS boys’ basketball team reached new heights, and set new standards of excellence. The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a record of 25-2, easily the best in the SEAIS this season. Both of those losses came outside the Region, which the Cavs absolutely dominated from wire to wire. It was a time of many talents and many styles. It was a coach’s dream - five senior starters, two more seniors on a deep and talented bench. It was a team which could win with speed, suffocating defense, and power. The front line trio of Chris Slocum, Jarome Gautreaux, and Patrick Nuttall was superb at the inside game. It was the highest scoring team MDS has ever had, twice going over the 100-point mark, a rare accomplishment for a high school team. For the first time in years, Mt. de Sales has a blue-chip athletic prospect. Chris Slocum signed a letter of intent in November to play for Jacksonville University, a Division | school in the Sun Belt Conference. All things considered, the '84-'85 season served as conclusive proof that MDS boys basketball is excellence in motion. 1984-85 Boys’ B-Team (left to right): Betsy Lewis (Manager), Jay Michael, James Lamarca, Rob Garvin, Dale Sheffield, Jon Halvorsen, George Cleveland, Brad Scott, Mark Hughes, Kinman Smith, Jason Boyd, Grant Gibson, Stephen Bleymaier, Kenneth Holloway. 90 Basketball Girls’ Basketball - Reaching Higher 1984-85 Lady Cavaliers, (seated left to right): Chanda Fowler, Kathy Rogers, Kris Porter, Jolie Gray, Amanda Hubby, Michelle Day. Allison James, all alone on the scoring end of the fast break. 1984-85 was challenging and difficult for 11 young women and their coach, Sister Pat Coward. Throughout the season, the Lady Cavaliers faced teams of greater talent and superior experience. Many of the girls played new positions, or found their roles on the team changed from the previous season. It produced many hard games, with few victories. It is difficult to measure success in a season, like this one, which does not produce many victories. But there was success, revealed in small ways. A good defensive play; a key rebound, a successful fast break - these things were there from time to time, and they speak of growth and improvement among this group of hardworking, untiring young women. In the words of St. Ignatius of Loyola: Teach us, good Lord, to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest; to labor and not to ask for any reward — save that of knowing that we do thy Will.
