A year to be remembered — the ses- quicentennial celebration of the found- ing of the Sisters of Mercy. The Mayor issued a proclamation designating Sep- tember 24, 1981 as Mercy Day is Ma- con. MDS celebrated-the anniversary at the Mass of the Holy Spirit, the tradi- tional opening ceremony of the school year It is important to remember the years of dedication and caring that have characterized the Sisters of Mer- cy in Macon. They have given of them- selves to the young people of this com- munity for more than a century, and it can truly be said that they have faithful- ly embraced Mother MacAuley’s vision — a vision of love, compassion, and hope. MDS has always benefitted from outstanding leadership, never more so than during the past 15 years, when these two Sisters n MDS' principals: Sister Mary Fidelis, R.S.M., and her predecessor, Sister Lourdes Sheehan, R.S.M es, Sr. Christine Smith, S.B.S., Sr. Elizabett Grace Marie DS [rs supporting smiling accomplishment . . . ere success ... victory ... and hope that we, too, can keep these traditions alive. Sister Fidelis in the Heritage Room, which was opened in early September. Containing photographs, narratives, and memorabilia, the Heritage Room tells the story of MDS' first hundred years. In the years ahead, the story of MDS will contin- ue, and the Class of 1982 will be here, with all of the Classes, past and future. We hope that you will look past the photographs into the meaning or the 1982 SALESIAN. The time we spent in producing it is less important than the meaning we tried to provide. In the future when this book is re-opened, we want its spirit to be stronger than it is now. In expressing our feelings for Mount de Sales, we found the following verse appro- piate: Yesterday is already a dream, And tomorrow is only a vision, But today ... well lived, Makes every yesterday A dream of happiness And every tomorrow ... A Vision of Hope ... Remember 1977 when you arrived at Mt. de Sales, the youngest class in the school, and your voyage to outer space mapping your individual 57 routes through a strange new era. Remember freshman year — the Greek festival, your winning the Homecoming skit — the year you were known as the class with enthusiasm in massive doses Remember sophomore year when your class- mates starred on athletic fields, courts, dia- monds, and golf courses; when three of MDS origi- nal debaters were sophomores, when three be- came cheerleaders, and when in ‘‘Eden’'s Echo” yours was the Ground Hog and Arabella. This was the year that your exuberance climaxed in winning the field day trophy. Ah, remember the junior year — Election 1980, winning debaters, winning oral interpreters, a winning toothless football star, a cheerleading captain, your leading role in ‘‘After Midnight, Before Dawn”’ . . . learning the answer to one of life’s most important questions. ‘‘What is life without commitment? ’ Remember your senior year — leaders at Mt. de Sales, excelling in all areas. Remember yourselves as a class of athletes and scholars, of debaters and dramatists, and your final play entitled ‘‘Breaking Up Is Hard To Do. ’ Surely, we, your faculty, will find breaking with you difficult when you claim your well-deserved diploma on May 18th. Then, the future that you have dreamed all these years will commence, not only your personal future but the future of the world. Eighteen years from now you will see the dawn of the 21st century; hopefully, you will shape that future. Perhaps you have heard or read this little story: When God was making the world, one angel stopped by and said, ‘What are you making? ’ Another stopped by and said, ‘‘Why are you making it? ’ A third one said, ‘‘Can | have it when you're finished? Finally, a fourth angel stopped by and said, ‘‘Can | help? ’ You are fourth angels. You are needed to help remake God's world in this era, to remake it into a world of peace by your dealing with poverty, hunger, injustice, aggression, violence. Let peacemaking be your calling. Continue the spread of loving and caring which you gave to us and with which you have been formed by family and faculty. Value yourself, continuing to grow in accepting and realizing the full you, ‘‘full of grace before God and man, respecting and embracing your brothers and sisters all. Resolv e to walk closely with the Lord; join others in prayer and pray alone; pray for guidance in time of doubt, pray in gratitude for times of blessings. Love life! Be present to each day, to each moment, to each grace, to each joy, to each challenge. Be faithful to yourself, to your family, to your God, to your Alma Mater. And know that you are loved by each of these. (A Poet's Hope) The senior class brings a new dimension to our school each year. With the end of another year, we would like to say farewell with a wish of ‘‘bon chance”’ to a unique group of friends. The class of 1982 has not only been through the rituals of Jr.-Sr.’s, talent shows and fun nights, but has also developed a feeling of oneness, a unity that provokes care and concern for each individual and a “hope” that wishes all well on the road ahead. This class in one not only of outside beauty, but of inner delight and inspiration. Through the years these special few have grown and matured together, and by doing so have developed the delicate sense of love ... and hope. Our hopes for you have been realized; We wish you the choicest of God’s blessings in all the days ahead. YOUR DEVOTED FACULTY Congratulations to the Class of 1982 God Bless You ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH Father John Cuddy Father Thomas Healy Father Michael Cerrone Gerry Schreck Count on it. For 35 years we have built a reputation for quality and dependability while building around the State of Georgia. Think about it. If you are going to spend what it takes to build a building, your true value comes from quality workmanship. While half of our work is obtained by being the low bidder, it’s no wonder that the other half is negotiated and most of that with repeat customers. They appreciate the value built into our quality. Whether you require renovation such as the City Auditorium or Mercer Law School, or a new building from the size of the Macon Coliseum to a Diamond Oil Service Station; if you value the cost savings in quality and dependability, then specify us.
