'lhere are four general steps through which the paper must pass before each publication date. Step one: The stories are assigned to the members of the journalism class. Step two: lt is the responsibility of the reporter, with the assistance of the meinbei's of the senior staff, to find all the information neces- sary for the writing of the stories assigned. Step three: After the pages are laid out by the senior staff, the proof is returned by the printers and is read by the staff and reporters. The proof is sent back to the printers, where it is corrected, and then sent back to the l7Cl'1If1iS News a second time, where it is again read and L'or1'CcfCLl. The Orphans won the contest at Vernois Gym on Feb- ruary 16, edging the locals 65-68. despite a spectacular 30 point out- put by Sl-10 phenomenon Coleman Carrodine. Centralia also took hit. Vernon 74-62 in an earlier meeting on December 5 at Trout Gym in Centralia. Rod Linder sparlced the Orphans throughout the entire sea- son as he posted a tremendous 23 point per game average for the campaign. Linder amassed 271 scores in Conference competition, a fine 22.7 clip, but his total fell one short of the South Seven record of 272 markers, set by lim Stokes of the Rams during the V352-53 season. -+ :I f f' 9' , CAGE SEASGN-'59 Coleman Carrodine, 5'-10 Vernois sensational scorer and floor- man, fires a long jump shot in the Springfield Lanphier game. The Bains although only advancing to the finals of the Regional Tourney in tournament competition, enjoyed a successful cage season in compil- ing a 17-9 mark for the season. Despite some heart-breaking loss- es, the Mt. Vernonites knocked off some fine ball clubs and con- sistantly gave the fans more than their money's worth. However the Vernois recovered well with a commanding 57-46 mauling of the Harrisburg Bulldogs. Unfortunately the Barns suf- fered defeats in the next three contests. They lost to the Centralia Orphans for the second time 65-58, and then failed to win a couple of one point verdicts, as they fell to the Benton Rangers 57-56, and to Carbondale Attucks by a 57-56 count. But in their succeeding three encounters, the Vernois handed the Springfield Lanphier Lions a 61-44 pasting, eeked out a 58-55 victory over the West Frankfort Redbirds, and walloped the Marion Wildcats 62-31, before clashing with the powerful Herrin Tigers again and absorbing a 68-51 loss, their worst defeat of the cam- paign. In their final four games of the year, they Whipped the Salem Wildcats 72-51, dumped the Harrisburg Bulldogs for the third time of the season 69-63, and then literally tore the Mt. Carmel Aces limb from limb, bouncing the Aces 83-52. The final game was lost to the Marion VVildcats 65-62. After the regular scheduled game the Mt. Since earning a living is part of life, it should also he a part of education. One ol' the main ohjectives of education is to prepare the individual for his vocation, so that he may become a happy member of society and a good citizen in the commu- nity in which he lives. ln the various trade classes and part-time programs, the vocational department strives to give the high school students actual work experiences that will narrow the gap hetwecn school and employment. The department also has a major responsi- hility to the adult people in the eoinnnlnity. This has brought ahout an adult education program which offers some courses in ap- prenticeship training and eontrilmutes to the upgrading in various trades and occupations. The course also provides hohhics and en- courages hettcr use olf leisure time. Lower left-Machine Shop, Mr. ReichIing's fifth hour classy Bottom left-House Building, Mr. Stel- zer's fifth hour class. She learns also ahout the career opportunities in clothing and textiles. ln advanced foods students learn to pre-- Pare and serve foods correctly. They also have projects in entertaining. The vocational ag- riculture department has an offering of four years for these boys. The introduc- tory class, Agriculture I, deals with farm- ing as a vocation, problems concerning establishment of a farm, elementary study of live stock, the relationship between the soil and the crop, and world patterns of agriculture. Principles of feeding, im- provement, selection, and breeding are all included in the livestock unit. The soil and crop study includes both cereal and forage crops. Special emphasis is placed on efficient use of the land. Agriculture ll is concerned with a more advanced study of soils, soil testing, fertilizer, live stoclc, and farmshop skills. Agriculture III and IV is divided into one class that meets on the regular basis while the other, the on-farm section, requires the three after- noon periods. Those in the three hour section are in class from December l un- til April lg at other times they are at home. Both sections study farm account- ing, insurance, credit, farm management, shop skills, and shop practice. Thomas Hayes and Guy Randall in a Soil testing experiment. A typical day in Ag. It provides adequate business training for personal use by the teaching business information which is necessarv for every-day living, and gives a basic Foundation lor those business students who Wish to go on to college to obtain a pro- fessional degree in some field of business. With the establishment of our Community College and the keen interest in the business administration curriculum, the high school department must nurture this desire for col- lege training. lhe enrollment of the department has steadily increased through the vearsg and at the present time, our enrollment is deter- mined not by the number of students inter- ested, but bv the amount of physical space available. Seven full-time teachers are em- ployed in the department. Villien additional space is available, future plans would include curriculum changes to add a course in l'undamentals of salesman- ship, to offer personal typing on the fresh- man-sophomore level, and to provide a typing library so that students would have a place to tvpe their work. Not more than ten percent of the graduating class can become members. The cardinal principles of this national organization in order of importance are scholar- ship, character, leadership, and service. No student can qualify unless he is in the upper one-fourth of his class, and, since scholarship is the most important principle of the society, students with scholastic averages of 3.5 CB plusl, or better, automatically be- come members unless there is a reflection on their character. In most cases these students also have ranked high in leadership and service to their school. Seldom is a student who has less then a 3.0 IBD average even considered unless he is thought to be especially deserving because of leadership and service, and, even then, he must be within a very few points of 3.0 CBD in scholarship. In the latter case, a faculty member may nominate him, but this student, as well as all the other candidates, must receive the majority vote of the faculty. This year's members of the Honor Society are, then, the elite of their class in scholar- ship, character, leadership, and service. ,af 11111111 Bill DeMent, President.
