Anti-Apartheid Dai j Our world ceases to be a true brotherhood when members of it are being persecuted, oppressed, and repressed. Today we are gathered to offer our hopes and prayers for them. That one day they might be free. Martin Luther King once said. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Whatever affects one directly, affects ali in- directly. Never again can we afford to live with the view that we are outsiders and unconnected to what is going on in the world. Man ' s progress and the advances of human society hinges on each of us. Whatever violates the integrity of the human person, what- ever insults human dignity such as subhuman living conditions arbitrary imprisonment, slavery, as well as disgraceful work con- ditions — where men and women are treated as mere tools for profit rather than as free and responsible persons, which are hap- pening in South Africa today are infamies. They poison human society. Every type of discrimination is to be overcome and eradi- cated. A human person stands alone all things and his rights and duties are universal and inviolable. Society must be founded on truth, built on justice — in freedom; it should grow everyday toward a more humane society. Human institutions must labor to minister to the dignity and purpose of man. They must put up a stubborn fight against any kind of slavery, whether political or social, and safeguard the rights of every man under every political system. The future of humanity lies in the hands of those who are strong enough to provide coming generations with reasons for living and hoping. By coming here tonight we are all pleading for peace. Our gathering, if anything, shows our support for those who are living under the apartheid system and our hope the someday they will experience the freedoms and dignity that should be guaranteed to each man.

Speidel, Goodrich, and Lille “Upon their third call to me and a discount in price. I hired them. That event took place in February ' 85. I wasn’t sure what the turnout would be and was expecting a loss. That night three people paid a $3 cover charge to hear Speidel, Goodrich, And Goggin. A month later, I un- successfully tried to bring them back to the Pub for a spring concert. Un- fortunately, they had just released an album, were touring Florida and changed members of their band. So, Dean Carroll suggested hav- ing them play during Orien- tation Week. We were both unsure how it would go over, nor the effect it would have on the start of the year. Dean Carroll and I, nervously, planned the event. When I left for New York, Tracey Jones became my D.C. contact for contract fees and signatures. When 1 returned in September, Tracey and 1 were prepared for the worst and thought about how much money we would lose. Then came the night of the event. Speidel. Goodrich, and Lille were supposed to start at 9:00 p.m. on September 19. There were 20 people in the pub; we all breathed heavily. By 11:00 there were 300 people enjoying the music of the group. Seven kegs of beer later, the party ended. Not only was the night a success, but it yielded a profit Once again the SGA was the foundation of a fantastic party and the start of a successful year. — Betsy Orlando i m PARTiEr =ii]
