MOUNT VERNON 2100 FOXHALL ROAD N. W. WASHINGTON D.C. 20007 1986 I TITLE PAGE ll I THEME 3 1 I n a small college, the quality of campus life is so closely linked to the VISION, COMMITMENT, and ENTHUSIASM of its students, working cooperatively on campus projects, set a standard of leadership, which makes us all proud. As Mount Vernon enters its twelfth decade of educating women leaders, we dedicate this anniversary yearbook to the 1985-86 SGA, and in doing so, we applaud the participation of all of our student leaders. It takes a spe- cial kind of student to contribute her efforts to her college community; you have done so capably and with love. Congratulations! Dean” Donna r4 DEDICATION | I DEDICATION [6 OPENING I Mount Vernon’s hang-out — Upper left Photo Pelham Dorm — Upper right photo Take a peek at Pelham Dorm — Bottom photo I OPEN 7 1 Convocation To the seniors of 1986 it is a year to shine, remember, grow, learn, share, and most of all enjoy what we have worked so long for . . . a college education. To start our year of shining, the Convoca- tion Ceremony was one of great gala. Julia M. Walsh was present to address the Seniors. Guests, and Family members during the Con- vocation ceremony. In 1963, Julia M. Walsh was the first appointed female to the American Stock Exchange. Presently, she is the president of the Washington Board and director of the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation. She is a dynamic role model for our class to follow. Following the ceremony in Hoolins Chapel which marked the beginning of the 110th Anniversary, this grand affair was underway in a big yellow and white tent with champagne con- tinuously flowing and a catered buffet dinner. The evening was one of sparkle. Karen Stevenson ' 86 Anti-Apartheid Dai j Our world ceases to be a true brotherhood when members of it are being persecuted, oppressed, and repressed. Today we are gathered to offer our hopes and prayers for them. That one day they might be free. Martin Luther King once said. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Whatever affects one directly, affects ali in- directly. Never again can we afford to live with the view that we are outsiders and unconnected to what is going on in the world. Man ' s progress and the advances of human society hinges on each of us. Whatever violates the integrity of the human person, what- ever insults human dignity such as subhuman living conditions arbitrary imprisonment, slavery, as well as disgraceful work con- ditions — where men and women are treated as mere tools for profit rather than as free and responsible persons, which are hap- pening in South Africa today are infamies. They poison human society. Every type of discrimination is to be overcome and eradi- cated. A human person stands alone all things and his rights and duties are universal and inviolable. Society must be founded on truth, built on justice — in freedom; it should grow everyday toward a more humane society. Human institutions must labor to minister to the dignity and purpose of man. They must put up a stubborn fight against any kind of slavery, whether political or social, and safeguard the rights of every man under every political system. The future of humanity lies in the hands of those who are strong enough to provide coming generations with reasons for living and hoping. By coming here tonight we are all pleading for peace. Our gathering, if anything, shows our support for those who are living under the apartheid system and our hope the someday they will experience the freedoms and dignity that should be guaranteed to each man. ■ PUB PAKTIbS 1 Speidel, Goodrich, and Lille “Upon their third call to me and a discount in price. I hired them. That event took place in February ' 85. I wasn’t sure what the turnout would be and was expecting a loss. That night three people paid a $3 cover charge to hear Speidel, Goodrich, And Goggin. A month later, I un- successfully tried to bring them back to the Pub for a spring concert. Un- fortunately, they had just released an album, were touring Florida and changed members of their band. So, Dean Carroll suggested hav- ing them play during Orien- tation Week. We were both unsure how it would go over, nor the effect it would have on the start of the year. Dean Carroll and I, nervously, planned the event. When I left for New York, Tracey Jones became my D.C. contact for contract fees and signatures. When 1 returned in September, Tracey and 1 were prepared for the worst and thought about how much money we would lose. Then came the night of the event. Speidel. Goodrich, and Lille were supposed to start at 9:00 p.m. on September 19. There were 20 people in the pub; we all breathed heavily. By 11:00 there were 300 people enjoying the music of the group. Seven kegs of beer later, the party ended. Not only was the night a success, but it yielded a profit Once again the SGA was the foundation of a fantastic party and the start of a successful year. — Betsy Orlando i m PARTiEr =ii] [ 12 . Mount Vernon College celebrated Founder’s Day. The day began with Panel Discussions in Clark and Cole Lounges. The discussions where both recent and past alumnae headed who spoke of the critical choices they in their lives, and how Mount Vernon contributed to those choices. The next activity was a fireside chat with Mrs. Barbara Bush, the Vice President ' s wife, an honorary Mount Vernon College alumna. Mrs. Bush discussed her own experiences and choices in life in an informal gathering in Post Hall. After the discussion, the second and third generation students were joined by Mrs. Bush in cutting the traditional Founder ' s Day cake for a reception recognizing Mt. Vernon’s honor students. The day was concluded by a formal candlelight dinner. After dinner Mt. Vernon ' s student modeled in some of the Fashions of the Eleven Decades. It featured historical sketches and clothing, styles of every decade from 1875 to today. It was a great ending to Mount Vernon ' s Founder ' s Day. We are look forward to another exciting Founder’s Day next year. oo FOUNDER ' S DAY FOUNDERS’S DAY 61 PERSONALITY DIVIDER PERSONALITY DIVIDER ' 631 A D M I N President Jane Evans addresses Beacon Honor Society members at the induction ceremony Judith Weiner, always busy at work at her desk with academic affairs R A T O N 04 ADMINISTRATION Dean of Students.
