Miss Marjorie Frye Gutheim “Off with the head” echoes down the corridor, ' midst the pitter-pat of feet scurrying back to Study Hall. When Miss Gutheim peers into the room, a studious atmosphere prevails — for the moment, at least. Then Miss Gutheim can return to her office and resume the arduous task of running the academic life of Mount Vernon. Her titie, Dean, is a rather loose term which encompasses only a few of her responsibilities. She additionally teaches United States History and Bible, handles the Prep Admissions Office, guides stu- dents in curriculum and college procedures, and advises the Student Council, Optima, and Chapel Guild. It would be difficult to see Mount Vernon functioning without Miss Gutheim. She is often the first person to arrive at school in the morning, more often the last to leave at night. On Saturdays, tiptoe past her office so as not to disturb her at work. When snow covers the streets of Washington, one can venture to say that Miss Gutheim clears a path to Mount Vernon for the snowplow to follow. Miss Gutheim represents the serious, academic side of Mount Vernon. She is characterized by her grace, dignity, and sincere devotion. Cupola ’68 is proud to dedicate this yearbook to Miss Gutheim, who has, in turn dedicated her life to Mount Vernon.
