Mr. Peter D. Pelham Time and place arc uppermost in my mind as I try to think June thoughts in January, I am reminded of a passage from T. S, Eliot’s Four Quartets: Time present and time past Are both perhaps present in time future, And time future contained in time past. If ail time is eternally present All time is unredeemable. Mr, Eliot’s concept of time is essentially one of timelessness. For him there is a fusion of past, present, and future; each aspect of time contributes to the others, each derives something unique or special from the others. Your experience at Mount Vernon shares a similar quality of timelessness, for collectively and individually part of your education has been determined by recalling the past, contem- plating the present, and conjecturing on the future. As you continue your education, I believe you will find increasingly that there is a close correlation between what has been learned, unlearned and re- learned and that which will be learned anew. You will discover that certain basic principles of life remain constant; that while individual personal relationships may vary appreciably that generically they arc predicated on certain unalterable funda- mentals; and. finally, that there is an overriding sense of unity within the variety of life, even as you have known it with all its multifaceted modes and mores. From your knowledge and understanding of time you will also gain a sense of place. Your present roles represent, in part, tracings on the blueprint of the future. Conversely, the places you occupy tomorrow will be prefigured partially by the points of view you have developed in the past. The years you have spent at Mount Vernon reflect an increased awareness of individual capacity. If they also culminate in an enlightened perspective then you u ' ill have achieved a firm and timeless foundation for the future. Do not forget the past as you look toward tomorrow and remember that if “all time is eternally present” and “unredeem- able then a part of you will be forever w ! ith Mount Vernon. 15
