When Miss Gutheim peers into the room, a studious atmosphere prevails — for the moment, at least. Then Miss Gutheim can return to her office and resume the arduous task of running the academic life of Mount Vernon. Her titie, Dean, is a rather loose term which encompasses only a few of her responsibilities. She additionally teaches United States History and Bible, handles the Prep Admissions Office, guides stu- dents in curriculum and college procedures, and advises the Student Council, Optima, and Chapel Guild. It would be difficult to see Mount Vernon functioning without Miss Gutheim. She is often the first person to arrive at school in the morning, more often the last to leave at night. On Saturdays, tiptoe past her office so as not to disturb her at work. When snow covers the streets of Washington, one can venture to say that Miss Gutheim clears a path to Mount Vernon for the snowplow to follow. Miss Gutheim represents the serious, academic side of Mount Vernon. She is characterized by her grace, dignity, and sincere devotion. Cupola ’68 is proud to dedicate this yearbook to Miss Gutheim, who has, in turn dedicated her life to Mount Vernon. urncmim ‘‘When he keeps his heart young and his expectations high and never allows his dream to die.” WILFERD A, PETERSON “It is going to your work as you go to worship, with a prayer of thankfulness and the aspiration to serve.” WILFERB A. PETERSON 5 , . is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.” WIIFERD A. PETERSON loaf and invite my soul.” WALT WHITMAN 8 “Art is expression; it is mind in action. WILFERD A. PETERSON Words are the pegs on which we hang creative ideas” WILFERD A + PETERSON 10 Your dreams come true when you act to turn them into realities.” WILFERD A. PETERSON “ The one who goes is happier than those he leaves behind” EDWARD POLLOCK eaciers Mr. Peter D. Pelham Time and place arc uppermost in my mind as I try to think June thoughts in January, I am reminded of a passage from T. S, Eliot’s Four Quartets: Time present and time past Are both perhaps present in time future, And time future contained in time past. If ail time is eternally present All time is unredeemable. Mr, Eliot’s concept of time is essentially one of timelessness. For him there is a fusion of past, present, and future; each aspect of time contributes to the others, each derives something unique or special from the others. Your experience at Mount Vernon shares a similar quality of timelessness, for collectively and individually part of your education has been determined by recalling the past, contem- plating the present, and conjecturing on the future. As you continue your education, I believe you will find increasingly that there is a close correlation between what has been learned, unlearned and re- learned and that which will be learned anew. You will discover that certain basic principles of life remain constant; that while individual personal relationships may vary appreciably that generically they arc predicated on certain unalterable funda- mentals; and. finally, that there is an overriding sense of unity within the variety of life, even as you have known it with all its multifaceted modes and mores. From your knowledge and understanding of time you will also gain a sense of place. Your present roles represent, in part, tracings on the blueprint of the future. Conversely, the places you occupy tomorrow will be prefigured partially by the points of view you have developed in the past. The years you have spent at Mount Vernon reflect an increased awareness of individual capacity. If they also culminate in an enlightened perspective then you u ' ill have achieved a firm and timeless foundation for the future. Do not forget the past as you look toward tomorrow and remember that if “all time is eternally present” and “unredeem- able then a part of you will be forever w ! ith Mount Vernon. 15 above: Miss Marjorie F. But “enforce- ment requires sweetening” so, additionally, under the leadership of Pam Covington and the advisement of Mrs. Fellowes and Mrs. Brown, House Council members have ar- ranged entertainment for the boarders — movies, cook-outs, ice-skating parties, and the notable Christmas Party. The Student Council of Mount Vernon is designed to perpetuate a democratic way of life within the school. It places great em- phasis on those responsibilities and obliga- tions which are embodied in the Honor Code. The Council serves as a useful link between students and the faculty. The Council consists of the President of the Student Body, the President of Optima, the President of House Council, the President of the Day Students, a Secretary -Treasurer, and the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of both classes. Miss Gutheim, Dean of the Seminary, was its trusted advisor. On registration day, Student Council mem- bers were on hand to extend a special wel- come to new girls. They organized the New Girl-Old Girl Party offering games and re- freshments to make them feel more at home. The handbook tests and Honor Assembly tried to instill a sense of responsibility in the students. The Student Council has worked diligently throughout the year to create an atmosphere of respect, honesty, and enthusiasm at Mount Vernon. 19 mors Class History Freshman Year We start little — 18 girls . . , Mrs. Peirce tries to teach us Mythology . . . Under the capable leadership of its new President, Fofie Lehmann, the Class of ’69 has maintained high standards of achievement, without sacrificing the merry- making for which it is well known. Their combination of loyalty and laughter will make next year’s tremendous burden a light load. The Juniors made a profitable start this year by catering to the needs of hungry students during the hockey games this fall. December brought their fashion show, and an exhibition of their combined creative skills. Models glided down the ramp wearing sports clothes from The Cambridge Shop, and evening clothes from Franklin Simon’s. In February, the Juniors attempted to raise more money by showing a movie called “Genevieve.” With this behind them, they contemplated the Junior-Senior Banquet with secret delight. On May 17 everyone enjoyed an “Evening with Johnny Carson,” followed by the memorable ring- ing ceremony, The Juniors have proven themselves to be trustworthy in all respects, and eager to tackle the Senior year. We wish them — the last class to graduate from Mount Vernon Seminary — the best of luck next year. This year, Optima members organized a Christmas party for the children of Mount Vernon’s employees. Even though the task force was small, the job was well done. A raffle was held in the Spring in order to raise money for next year’s club. right: Sealed: Diana Zejger, Lyn Nicholson, president, Vicky Saper, Second Row: Miss Gutheim, advisor. Chapel Guild Chapel Guild has always been one of the most important organizations at Mount Vernon. Its duties have been carried out this year under the leadership of its president, Cissy Fry, and its ad- visor, Miss Gutheim. The morning chapel services which it spons ors arc designed to give the students a meaningful outlook for the day. Members of Chapel Guild represented Mount Vernon at area religious conferences held for students of private schools. At the Washington Area Religious Conference hosted by Georgetown Visitation, the topic was “My place in the World as a Jew, Catholic, or Protestant.” In February, four members spent a weekend in Natural Bridge, Virginia, attending a conference which discussed the topic: “Can You Survive College Life?” This year, Chapel Guild reestablished the Mon- day morning Flag Ceremony which had been abandoned for several years. Lend-a- hand Most rewarding of all human experiences is the satisfaction derived from helping others. Lend-A- Hand members are dedicated to this goal. Each student automatically becomes a member because of her contribution of five dollars to Lend-A- Hand. Active members may volunteer for several types of social work. The majority of members go to the Neighborhood House to care for children whose parents both work during the day. Others who care, work in the Care office, addressing letters and boxes which will be sent to needy families. This year, Lend-A-Hand gave a memorable Christ- mas Party for the children from the Neighborhood House, and neighboring schools. The children en- joyed all aspects of the event, from Santa Claus to candy canes and a rendition of the Prep Players’ production, “Androcles and the Lion,” A special project was to continue to support a girl who wishes to become a seamstress through the Foster Parents’ Plan. All members of Lend-A-Hand felt a sense of ac- complishment through helping those who arc less fortunate than they. 53 Top to bottom: Maureen Krakes Kem Watson, Didi Schupp. Susan Wild, Bilsy Marshall, Peri Lyle., Janet Brocket!, Sharon Railing, Laura Kirby-Smith, Alison Finney. Mrs. Julia Heflin continued in her role of director and advisor. A tremendous Christmas success, “Androcles and the Lion” was given in an afternoon performance for more than 350 youngsters from neighborhood schools. That evening, the club snapped back into costume to perform for young-at-heartsters. On the 29th of April, the curtain drew wide to present “Stage Door,” the club’s Spring play. For the first time in the history of Mount Vernon, males played men’s parts. Needless to say, “Stage Door” was a great success. To add to its list of firsts, Prep Players ’68 sponsored an informative National Repertory Theater Seminar in Lloyd Hall. The club also attended three premieres at Ford ' s Theater in Washington.
