Vernon completed another fine athletic season as the basketball team rolled to a 12 win, 8 loss record, and a tie for 3rd place in conference play. This record represented the best effort on the part of Mt. Vernon's hard court teams since the conference champs of 1952. Mt. Vernon established another record as they fought their way into the sectional finals. This had not been accomplished by any other Mustang squad since 1950. The '57-'58 squad was characterized by many extremes. In some games it would have been difficult to buy a basket, while in others the Mustangs delivered a sharp shooting percentage. Mt. Vernon was defeated by the conference cellar dweller and the next week upset the conference leaders. This hot and cold property was the big reason the Mt. Vernon team did not deliver the conference champs. The boys were determined and hard workers and they possess the ability to work together. This, and a splended job of coaching by Mr. Chet Wallace resulted in the fine Mustang basketball tealn which Mt. Vernon was very proud of. THEY 48 40 63 69 54 50 54 50 30 79
