Cold wars, economic changes and other world conditions cause the pessimists to see little use for youngfpeople to use their initiative in developing traits of leadership which will enable them to find their places in life. Such is not the case where the students of Mt. Vernon High School are concerned. The school year book is one example of earnest effort combined with good leader- ship in the accomplishment of something worthwhile. Difficult times may lie ahead, but time spent in constructive development is never wasted and will help us to meet difficult situations as they arise. My advice to the students of Mt. Vernon High School is that you adequately pre- pare. and with an optimistic outlook see the opportunities of life. It has been said that life is a cafeteria. I am glad of this opportunity to make a formal expression of my thanks for the excellent work done by the 1953 Annual Staff, its sponsor, and all those students who assisted in the completion of this fine annual. This Annual is an expression of the united effort behind the many fine achievements of our school. The willingness of each student and faculty member to shoulder his responsi- bility in every school enterprise is sure evidence of our future success, And to the new members of our student body and faculty, as well as to those who have been here in years past, I extend a most hearty welcome.
