The food service department at Mount Vernon has emerged as one of the most active groups at school. Every Thursday throughout the year, twice a day, food service has pre¬ sented The Mount Vernon Tavern, an alternative to cafeteria lunch, available to all teachers. For a nom¬ inal fee, teachers are provided with a sumptuous square meal prepared entirely by the food service students. In addition to operating The Mount Vernon Tavern, the department sold homemade fruitcakes to the faculty at Christmas, as well as homemade Valentine ' s Day cakes in February. When the group ' s previous sponsor, Mrs. Anne Meacham, took leave, she was replaced by Mrs. Hartman, who is continuing the program that Mrs. Meacham started—a program that has helped to make the past school year a bit more memorable for many people. Greenhouse Starts To Bloom After three years of dreaming, planning, and building, the green¬ house in the senior courtyard fi¬ nally became a reality this spring. Three years ago, the greenhouse was not much more than a dream and a request for the county to supply one thousand dollars — enough to purchase the raw ma¬ terials. After one year, the county agreed to buy the school a green¬ house, and plans were drawn. Mon¬ ey and labor were then needed to construct the greenhouse from the newly acquired raw materials. The PTA, the SGA, and the science department provided the money, while the Unbeaten Path Club and the Plant Club, along with other volunteers, provided the labor. Vocational students from the Edi- son-Mt. Vernon cooperative pro¬ gram were responsible for the greenhouse ' s wiring, and commu¬ nity groups and individuals sup¬ plied the plants. Thus, through the patient and unselfish efforts of many, Mt. Vernon now has a last¬ ing treasure: the greenhouse. School Life —29
