Freshmen Find Valentine ' s Day Profitable The freshman class exhibited ex¬ traordinarily fine organization and participation when it sold Valen¬ tine ' s Day lollipops and carna¬ tions this February. A project usual¬ ly attempted only by upper class- men, this Valentine ' s Day effort proved, as usual, to be quite a large task. But, any sacrifices the fresh¬ men made to organize this project were well worth it: they sold over one thousand lollipops and over three hundred carnations. This suc¬ cess is just one example of the ef¬ ficiency of the freshman class, a class which, as of February, had earned more money for its treas¬ ury than all the money from Mt. Vernon ' s past three freshman classes combined. School Life—25

The food service department at Mount Vernon has emerged as one of the most active groups at school. Every Thursday throughout the year, twice a day, food service has pre¬ sented The Mount Vernon Tavern, an alternative to cafeteria lunch, available to all teachers. For a nom¬ inal fee, teachers are provided with a sumptuous square meal prepared entirely by the food service students. In addition to operating The Mount Vernon Tavern, the department sold homemade fruitcakes to the faculty at Christmas, as well as homemade Valentine ' s Day cakes in February. When the group ' s previous sponsor, Mrs. Anne Meacham, took leave, she was replaced by Mrs. Hartman, who is continuing the program that Mrs. Meacham started—a program that has helped to make the past school year a bit more memorable for many people.
