Choral Department Rings In Christmas The Choral Department repeated a tradition older than any student at Mount Vernon when it presented its ever-popular Christmas Concert. Tra¬ ditional as well as current seasonal renditions were performed, offering enjoyment to everyone ' s musical taste. Of particular interest was the grand finale — Handel ' s Hallelujah Chorus —during which Mount Vernon Cho¬ rus alumni were invited onstage to join voices with present choral students. The applause from the audiences for both performances in¬ dicates why the Concert is repeated every year. The Madrigals harmonize on the popular Fruitcake. Together with Mount Vernon chorus alumni, the present choral department presents the Hallelujah Chorus. School Life —23

Cerebral Goals Preserved By Two Groups The true purpose for high school is often overshadowed by numer¬ ous extracurricular activities. T here are, however, two organizations which preserve academic goals: the National Honor Society and the It ' s Academic team. In the fall and spring, the Na¬ tional Honor Society accepts ap¬ plications for membership. Those who meet the high standards for membership — character, leader¬ ship, scholarship, and citizenship — are notified and inducted within a few weeks. The It ' s Academic team is a group of seven people who pit their intellects against those of other area high schools in locally televised cerebral competitions. Although only three can partici¬ pate in a televised production, all team members are required to en¬ dure the same rigorous mental training. Team members not pic¬ tured here are: Jim Easton, Neil McDougall, Duane Maxwell, and Chris Rowland. ■ Hr r m j • 1 1 i 1 r r ’ : National Honor Society inductees take pledge. On the air with L. W.Va. Bus Trip, Candy Canes Highlight December A busload of Mt. Vernon students, under the patient guidance of English teacher Mrs. Cynthia Rufty, took the weekend of December 4 to trek to Morgantown, West Virginia to watch Barry Signorelli, class of 1976, star in West Virginia University ' s production of Romeo and Juliet. The students were housed in a church, whence a bus took them to tour the University campus, and, of course, to see the play. A week after the bus returned to Mt. Vernon, the students were still raving about the production. The Junior class sponsored the tradi¬ tional candy cane sale this Christmas, an ever-popular fund-raising event which grossed five-hundred dollars for the class. The popularity of this project is undoubtedly due to the efficiency with which the Juniors handled their business. Mr. Lyons boasts about tbe number of candy canes be has received. West Virginia trip chaperones Mr. Pauley and Mrs. Rufty pose with a select group of cultured students.
