Due back in two weeks THE SURVEYOR Joe Brown, our very efficient editor and Billy Gee, assistant editor examine pic- tures to meet the March 10 deadline. The Yearbook was planned and the dummy was drawn during the summer months. Our final layout was received during September and thus the work began. Games and activities kept the photographers and editors busy. Barbara Chambers, typing editor supervises copy done by typists Margaret Deacon, Jackie Rogerson, and Gloria Dunn. Shirley Lester, advertising manager assists Don Cromley, ass istant copy editor and Frank Scott, assistant advertising manager to secure ads for our new yearbook. This year we had four separate deadlines. Two before Christmas and two afterward. The snow delayed us and photography mishaps caused retakes and worry. Typists, editors, and photographers really rushed to meet the final deadline. We made it! The rest is now up to the publishing company and the circulation manager. STAFF Louise Green, sports editor confers with Dee Armstrong, layout editor while Ann Arthur, Kathy Gray, and Selena Dovel look through last years yearbook for helpful information. Beverly Ludlow, circulation editor assists Dee Armstrong in giving out the new yearbooks. Joan Morris, Cynthia Bennett, Ann Massey, and Sidney Thompson are all new members of the 1954 yearbook staff. George Grayson gives assistance to Shirley Myers, copy editor and Janice Harlow, business manager in arranging the 1954 yearbook. George Grayson is a new member on our staff, but has proven to be very helpful to all concerned. Janice and Shirley are old- timers with two years of experience. STUDENT honor plaque was designed and placed in our main corridor. A campaign familiar to our ears is the Magazine Drive. Through the efforts of our stu- dent body, a total of $10,121 was reached this year. Due to our excellent student salesmanship, we were able to donate money to help finance pianos for our auditorium; and to give a com- plete Christmas dinner to each student in school. Mid spring presented a busy schedule for us. Nominations for officers were held and after much campaigning, the final election eased the minds of many hope- ful candidates. The last meeting of the year was conducted by our new president. SENATE First Row, Left to Right: Ann diZerega, Margaret Munday. Pat- terned after our National Gov-|lo« ernment, we have represent- | atives who are elected from each I home room in the school. Two senators are elected by each class and the cabinet is appointed by the president. A coordinating body, also appointed by the president, has as its job to serve as a go-between for student gov- ernment and the Administration. Our principal has always given the students a voice in many school policies. An Honor Code was estab- lished in our school this past winter. Getting copy ready for a newspaper was no small job, and our Em Vee Hi staff had its problems. Much work and many headaches was the cry to be heard by all. Since a lack of funds was our major concern we appealed to our capable advertising managers. Their efforts paid off and as a result we were able to print an eight page paper. Our staff was organized into two classes. The first period class, made up of staff editors, were the second and third year journalists. Students enrolled in second period class were those actually studying journalism. Sitting, Left to Right: Nelson Coe, Marion Cannon, Pam MaeNevin. Standing: Nancy Howard. As a matter of necessity, the January edition was prepared for the printers in five days. As a final tribute to the graduates, the last edition of the paper was dedicated in full to them. It is hoped that many pleasant memories will be yours in future years as you read your names in the news! 7 Our school has much to be proud of when our marching band performs. The familiar block letter M is one of the favorite formations of the band during half time football shows. Led by Drum Major Jeanne Rossie and directed by Mr. Gene Steinbach the marching band has appeared in many outside activities in neighboring communities which has helped our school in building its prestige. v BAND AND CONCERT BAND: First Row, Left to Right: Louise Miller, Eddie Surovell, Sue Lukehart, Frances Haggard, Sharon Vandenberg, Nancy Fleming, Phyllis Feather- stone, Erna Klussman, BarbOTa Armistead, Gary Gillum, Ann Leonard, Brenda Burch. Evidence of a job well done is found in the excellent records of accident prevention in the past years. Members of this safety organization are selected from a list of requests by the Execu- tive Department of the Student Government. These members are selected on a basis of dependability, honesty, and impartiality. Activities of the year included a Christmas party, a county parade, and a trip to see an American League Base- ball game in Washington. Mr. Murphy, sponsor. We hail as a chip off the old block and are very proud of our parent, the Senior Commercial Club. Because of the increased enrollment in this organization, it became necessary to us on our own, thus coming into existence, the Junior Com- mercial Club. Keeping in mind the purpose for which the club was organized, we have tried to acquaint the members of the club with the standards expected in the business field, and to create a greater sense of pride in the quality of work in commercial subjects. Although our accomplishments have not been too numerous, we should like to mention the bake sales and the dance sponsored by the club for raising money to help defray expenses of the yearbook. Several of the members wrote and gave a skit on the Three Types of Secretaries for the enter- tainment of the dub members, and it has been our privilege to have representatives from various business organizations talk to us. As we glance at these familiar faces our minds are filled with many enjoyed memories that we shared as members of the Bible Club. We remember the first meeting when the room wasn ' t large enough to seat all our mem- bers. We remember the daily Chapel Services held in the auditorium, and the regular display on the Bible Club bulletin board. The bake sales we sponsored were always a tremendous success, with the many cakes that we all contributed. Then there were the monthly Bible Quizes sponsored by Youth For Christ who worked hand and hand with all the Bible Clubs in Northern Virginia. Yes, 1954 really brings many memories to our minds, and are days we shall never forget. One of the greatest memories was the lesson we all learned: To keep looking upward. ice-president; Carol Deacon, Sykes, Chaplain; Dorothy ; Jackie Satterwhite, presi- ' , assistant chaplain (absent). During half of each meeting, members were required to speak nothing but Spanish. For each English word spoken a fine of one cent was im- posed; which, incidentally, was of great aid to the club treasury. Throughout the year, many interesting trips and events were planned and carried out; among which were a Christmas party, a visit to the Pan American Union Building, a Spanish dinner, and to complete a successful year, a picnic for members and their friends. Membership was open only to those who have two credits for the subject— one for regular class work and one for the work program. On February 16, the District Convention was held here at Mount Vernon with Washington- Lee, James Monroe of Fredericksburg and Mount Vernon participating. Barbara Moore won the sales demonstration contest and went on to participate in the area convention which was held February 24 at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D. C. Some of the highlights were dinner at the Crystal Room of the Willard Hotel, and a tour through the White House and a fashion show. Mallory Collins and Tommy Butzner were elected as delegates to attend the three day State Convention in Richmond March 7, 8, and 9. The club was also a co-sponsor with the Senior Commercial Club in a Beauty Contest and Fashion Show. The garments modeled by the girls were furnished by Alexandria merchants. This year the Northern Virginia Tournament was held at Mount Vernon for the first time. Out of the four schools competing, Mount Vernon was the highest ranking. Eight girls were chosen for the State Tournament held at West Hampton College, Richmond, and one girl, Heidi Gibbons, made the All-State Hockey Team. Our hockey team had the best season ever, winning five out of six games. Coaches Hughs and Wilson put this hard working team through practice every day, weather permitting. With practice twice a week led by their faithful captain, Beverly Ludlow, they got off to a good start cheering their team on to victory. These girls can tell you that there is a lot of work to do on the J.V. squad. Cheering for Basketball and Football is their job, but they also help out at Pep Rallies and Varsity games by selling programs. The squad deserves credit for a successful year.
