ScAooi 'Diatncct s4dmi Ua icU vta The Board of School Trustees for the 1967-33 school year. Seated (L-R) Elmer Pharr, Helen McCormick, and Brenda Coff. Standing (L-R) Jerry Rutledge and Robert Rapp. Right: Melvin J. Levin, Superintendent Far Right: Billy D. Walker, Assistant Superintendent Business Right: Carl E. Culiver, Assistant Superintendent Building and Grounds Far Right: Dr. John Emhuff, Assistant Superintendent Instruction 2 Administrators Dedication The members of the yearbook staff are pleased to dedicate the 1988 Hoop-Pole to Mrs. Wilma Jacobs who retired last year. From August, 1946 to May, 1957, she was the secretary to former principal, Charles Hames. After an absence of thirteen years to raise her family, she returned, and from August, 1970 until June, 1987, she served as the Athletic Department secretary, handling not only those funds, but all of the Extra-Curricular accounts as well. She was always busy, but never too busy to help anyone who asked for it and never too busy to smile. During the summer of 1987, several MVSHS students participated in some activities other than the usual swimming and cruising, some school related, some not. Right: Donna Krietenstein, Krista Bebout, and Sheryl Botta attended Hoosier Girls' State. Below: Angela Ricketts, Mrs. Madden, and Keith Gibbs (not pictured) were translators at the Pan Am Games. Below right: Cory Westerfield, Todd Bacon, Gary Hartmann, and Deryl Botta went to Hoosier Boys' State. Opposite page: Scott Quintilliano competed in sailing regattas. Top right: The band worked hard, as usual, to perfect their marching routine. Lower right: Mike Mohr, Bill Rowe, Mike Allyn, and Brian Denning are shown working at the 4-H Fair for FFA. 4 Summer Activities Sctmm i 4ctCvCtie Summer Activities 5 Band photo courtesy of Jay Hile The easiest way to find Mr. Woodall's office is to: 1. Go to Hardee's for lunch. 2. Consult the map posted in the main hall. 3. Organize Senior Skip Day. The easiest way to find Mrs. Jones's office is to: 1. Volunteer to blow up balloons for Student Council. 2. Stuff a Freshman in a locker. 3. Grab a quick smoke in the bathroom. The best way to get from the relocatables to the science dept, and still be on time is to: 1. Cut through the courtyard. 2. Sprout wings and fly. 3. It's impossible! Run, baby, run!!! The easiest way to find the yearbook room is to: 1. Ask one of the staff members wandering the halls 7th period. 2. Follow the people coming back from Hardee's 7th period. 3. Follow the yelling and screaming voices. To find the choir department: 1. Listen for a Pee Wee Herman laugh. 2. Listen for people whining, We love you, Conrad ... 3. Leave the renovated part of the school and go straight. Lb The best way to find the science department is to: 1. Follow the smell of burning sulfur to Mr. Schuessler's room. 2. Trail the snakes back to Mr. Riedford's room. 3. Let divine intervention lead you to Mr. Ransford. 'Ttecv Sc laoC To find the most recent part of the reconstruction: 1. Follow the stinky caulking smell. 2. Follow the smell of new carpet. 3. Just plain follow your nose! To get past the mob of people at the junction of the main hallway and the social studies hallway one should: 1. Pull a fire alarm. 2. Crawl. 3. Pole vault. To get upstairs in a hurry one should: 1. Rent a wheelchair and use the elevator. 2. Climb the elevator cables. 3. Grab onto some big person's shirt and let him tow you. You know we are having a earthquake drill if: 1. See 1 on the tornado question. 2. There are short blasts on the new intercom system. 3. Mrs. Jones runs down the hall yelling, The sky is falling! The sky is falling! You know we are having a fire if: 1. The exit you are assigned to use is blocked by construction. 2. You smell smoke. 3. The teachers beat you out the door. You know we are having a tornado drill if: 1. The construction workers set off the fire alarm 2. The fire alarm is ringing, but the faculty members are stationed at the exits and won't let you out. 3. There is a siren noise on the new intercom system. Map Page 7 This year, frosted denim was the thing to wear; Raisin Guys were the things to have, and deck shoes were resurrected. Shaved hair was still worn by a few brave souls. In the first weeks, the cafeteria and the main hall were not the places to be. Construction dust, terrazza goop, and partitions were everywhere. As the year wore on, the construction wound down and new parts of the building were opened. The Commons was the new place to be at lunchtime, but the foyer remained the gathering place in the morning. 8 Student Life Studeat 1. The Breakfast Club — Opposite, far left 2. Once again, there was no parade. However, the Scavenger Hunt was repeated with the Freshmen pulling off an upset. Also, due to the new paint job, we could not decorate the halls as in past years. To make up for this, each class decorated a section of the auditorium which had not yet been repainted. The Spirit Day dress-up competition featured Buttons and Shades Day, College T- Shirt Day, Dress Up Day, and Sweats and Bandanna Day. The Spirit Stick was won by the Seniors. Spirit Week 13 ‘tfyiy i 4dmi U4tn4Uo't Although the school was still very much under construction , Mr. Goerlitz commented that everything went a lot smoother than last year. The students and faculty were terrific — a big help! Since most of the remaining construction was upstairs away from students and teachers, the learning environment was greatly improved over last year. There were also fewer confrontations among students which Mr. Goerlitz felt was due to the increased size of the school. I am extremely proud of Phase 1. The quality of the work is something the community can be proud of for years to come. G. Donald Goerlitz, Principal Tom Collins Director of Information Systems Mr. Collins is in charge of the management of computer operations. He also super- vises the high school budget, the purchase of classroom equipment, and the mainte- nance of the building and grounds. 14 Administrators Ann Jones Assistant Principal Mrs. Jones' responsibilities focus on student services and activities. She admits new students, supervises student discipline, oversees textbook distribution and collection, coordinates convocations, and serves as co-sponsor of the Student Council. Charles Valier Athletic Director Mr. Valier's responsibil- ities include recommending personnel for coaching as- signments, scheduling athlet- ic events, and securing offi- cials. He coordinates transportation and the sched- uling of events requesting school facilities for meetings. He also assumes fiscal re- sponsibility for the entire athletic program. We look ahead. We are the future. We are the hope. We have a dream to dream, a life to fulfill, A new world to scope. The Class of '88 is moving on; But this isn't the end, this is the dawn. The dawn of a better world we know we can make, Grounded in the love, support, and confidence Time can never shake. How do we say thanks? How do we hold on. And let go, too? We leave you now, but in our hearts We still hold onto you. This is it! We did it! You all walked with us And saw us through. Vernon, I've enjoyed being here. Everybody has been really nice. For a long time, I had this dream to be an exchange student to the United States. In the summer of 1987, the dream came true. On August 16th, I was on my way, together with 400 other German exchange students, to the United States. After a couple of days in New York, I arrived in St. Louis where the Steve Britts, my host family for the first half of this year, picked me up. Three days later I was already going to school! What a difference! In Germany we have approximately 15 subjects and 45 minute periods. Normally school starts at 7:30 A.M. and ends at 1:05 P.M. We also have 5 minute breaks between classes, and after every 2 periods, a 15 minute break to have a snack and go outside. We eat lunch at home, and we do sports only in clubs because schools are only for academics. Since my first day in Mt. Vernon, I've enjoyed being here. Everybody has been really nice. 1 appreciate the opportunity to have had so many different experiences. First I lived with the Britts, a family with 3 children, and then in January, I moved to Nancy Pfister's house. I made most of my friends by being on the cross country, basketball, and tennis teams. I also have a lot of memories from my year that I will never forget: teepeeing with Carey; chemistry with Tracy; lunch with Lani, Lori, Robin, and Heather; Spring Break '88 in Florida, thanks to the Ransfords who took Peggy, Lani, and me; crusing around in Evansville with Shannan and Chrissy; and many, many more. 1 want to thank all these people, especially the Britt family and Nancy Pfister for sharing their homes with me. Coach Tucker commented that the team was successful because we had good team unity, and good all-around capabilities on the court, such as strong hitters, blockers, and setters. Volleyball 83 0?O6t 4l£C --------y Team Advances fa Sectional Success can come in many forms, and for the '87 Wildcat football team, it came in the form of a 4-6 season. Although the record fell short of expectations, it was successful in terms of accomplishments. The competitive Cats came up short in two games which would have made a big difference, and the loss of quarterback Dirk Johnson for the most of the season were two negatives hard to overcome. Defeating Vincennes twice in one season including the first round of the sectionals and winning our first year sectional play- off game were two very emotional high points. Although graduation losses from this team will take a heavy toll, the return of players who have “tasted victory and have made the commitment will continue the football team on their road to excellence. Vernon goes far beyond providing visual effect for the band. The program has been designed to encourage students to use their creativity in expresing themselves through music. During the fall, the primary goal of the guard is to provide a pleasing picture for the eye. Through choreographed routines, the music is enhanced. The fall guard had a winning season this year. Taking home 3 first place trophies and beating Jasper at District Contest were some of their accomplishments. In the past 2 years, the guard program has been fortunate to expand into the winter season by participating in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association. This year the winter guard took on a sophisticated look and performed to the music of West side Story. The MVSHS academic teams participated in three different area competitions during the 1987-1988 school year under the guidance of Mrs. Bonnie Awe. Assisting her at the contests were Principal, Don Goerlitz, Miss Phyllis Barker, and Mrs. Ann Shank. Six members of the Spelling Team traveled to Tecumseh for the Hoosier Academic Spell Bowl. The team did not do as well as they hoped, but they had fun and enjoyed the competition. The Academic Decathlon, the most challenging of the competitions, took place in January at Jasper and included questions on math, physics, the history of aviation, fine arts, grammar, Wuthering Heights, and the French Revolution. The team won seventeen individual medals. For the Hoosier Academic Super Bowl held in April at North High School in Evansville, MVSHS entered six three-member teams in a wide variety of subjects: fine arts, science, math, history, English, and All-Around. The All-Around team won 1st, the math team placed 2nd, and the fine arts team received 3rd. The year started pretty slowly. Then things started happening. Sports seasons were ending, pictures were slowly coming in, (But that's another story.) and we started turning out pages. The first two deadlines were met even with the rivalries among the staff. (But that's another story.) Alas, the third deadline was missed. (But that's another story.) All of the sudden, the school year ended, and we were left with an unfinished book. Those of us on the staff who were seniors found ourselves actually returning to the school to finish this book! What did P.T. Barnum say was “born every minute ? This book is being produced mostly by unhappy graduates. And you bought this book expecting to see pictures of yourself. What is missing from this famous quotation? Continued on page 161 Continued from page 160 A_________and his______are soon_______. (But that's another story.) Here we sit (while all of you are at Kramer's Lake) . . . without group photos or team stats. This is our yearbook to create. So, what do you get next year at homecoming? A book filled with pictures of ourselves and all our closest friends! And you've already bought . . . Oh dear ... (Tote up another one on the register, Steve. Ching! ) Well, we hope you like it, but if you don't, don't think we will be chasing you down with chain saws. (But that's another story.) So as not to get myself arrested for plagiarism, I must tell you that some, if not most, of this copy was copied from Board of the Rings by the Harvard Lampoon. (But that's another story entirely!) Yearbook 161 1) After losing the pica award, angry members of the yearbook staff put editor, Michelle Curtis, in a straight jacket and took pictures while visiting her in the padded cell. 2) What is that she is doing? It can't be work . . . Can it? 3) Richie finds his long lost twin sister. 4) Deadlines amuse me, but not very much. — Mrs. Reed Tt iCdc t 'ZOontt Bottom (L-R): Beth Latham and Jon Tucker.
