MOUNT VERNON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL MOUNT VERNON, INDIANA “Anna is a very caring lady; she cares about her family; she cares about her students, and she cares about the school and her fellow teachers, remarked Delbert Pace at the faculty year-end luncheon at which Mrs. Berry was honored. Anna taught English for 17 years at MVSHS before she chose to retire at the end of the 1985-86 school year. She come here from Muhlenberg. Ky. where she had taught for 3 years, before that she taught for 9 years in Perry County. Ky. Previously, she had taught one year each at Jackson School, Chaffe Public School, and Jonesburg Public School. aN of which were located in Missouri She received her Bachelor's Degree from Southeast Missouri State College and her Master's Degree from the University of Missouri She was the yearbook advisor for 16 years, and several thousand MVSHS alumni can recall pleasant memories of their high school years because Mrs. Berry felt strongly that the yearbook was the most important publication'' put out by the school. She also served as advisor to the Sunshine Club, a club that performed little kindnesses' for staff members throughout the school year She always looked on the bright side of things she is a very sweet lady, and she helped me with anything she could . always helped me when I needed it . helped me so many times I con't count them all .. was kind and willing to help others'' were remarks made by members of the Sunshine Club. Commented one of the students. The nice thing about Mrs Berry was that she was always there for us. Many students continued their achievements throughout the summer. Jim Goodridge, John Hall, Jim Stickels, and alternate Steve Fulton attended Hoosier Boys' State this year. Pam Wilcox attended the Hugh O'Brian Leadership Conference in Indianapolis. Becky Dunn also attended the conference as a counselor, and she later attended the International Conference also held in Indianapolis. Closer to home, Tony Acuff played on the sectional winning Funkhouser baseball team in Evansville. Two MVSHS students traveled out of the country this year. The first, John Reed, went to Australia to visit relatives, attend school, and participate in some extra curricular activities. Junior, Jim Culley participated in an exchange program sponsored by 4-H. He spent a month in Japan. 4 Summer Activities Members of our Junior Classical League, led by president Jim Goodridge, traveled to Indiana University at Bloomington to attend their national convention. Those JCL members that received awards were Jim Goodridge — second place in sculpture; John Goodridge — first in pastel art and second in ink; Mini Jain (Graduate) — ninth in oils and acrylics; Mary Higgins — third in small models and fourth in the junior 100- meter dash; Richard Lutterman — sixth in the junior marathon; and Jim Stickels — seventh in Modern Mythology. The Future Farmers of America attended their state convention, where the MVSHS Chapter was ranked 11th out 207 in the state for overall activity and ranked 1st in the State Foundation Drive which raised over four thousand dollars in our area alone. Attending FFA members receiving awards were Brian Parkinson (Graduate) — National Central Region Winner in Outdoor Recreation Proficiency; Deke Vogel — fourth in the state in Outdoor Recreation Proficiency; Jeff Denning — second in state in Cereal Grain Production Proficiency; Dave Thayer (Graduate) — fourth in state in Computers in Agriculture; Bill Rowe and Matt Allyn — third in state in Quiz Bowl; John Lang — District X President for 1986-87 and recipient of Hoosier Farmer Degree; Jennifer Allyn — recipient of Hoosier Farmer Degree; and Tim Seifert (Graduate) — recipient of Hoosier Agribusiness Degree. The MVSHS Pom Pon squad showed that hard work and training pay off when they attended a training camp at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The girls won more than 30 blue ribbons individually and won second place out of eight squads attending. Summer Activities 5 WILDCATS HAVE SPIRIT! (left to right, top to bottom) 1. John Reed 2. The halls are filled with strange sights and sounds as the banners, streamers, and posters go up in designated class halls; groups of students go through the building chanting class yells, and people dress like little kids, beach bums, or concert goers depending on the designated costume of the day. This year's fall spirit week was unusual in two respects. Construction equipment eliminated the space needed for float construction, and therefore the traditional homecoming parade was replaced by a very successful scavenger hunt held on the Thursday night before the game. Secondly, the Friday pep session was followed by the distribution of the 1986 Hoop-Pole. Alumni from the class of '86 were invited to Come home for homecoming and a remarkably large number of them did. (left to right, top to bottom) 1. Dana Neuman. Tammy Pierce, and Dawn Hunter 2. Not only did we see another school year go by, we saw the high school itself undergo major changes. We saw the beginning of a 16.9 million dollar renovation project. The work started at the end of the 1985-86 school year and continued through 1987. We saw the relocatable classrooms being moved to the parking lot while the courtyard was completely stripped and relandscaped. The Agriculture, Business, Science, Special Education, Art, and Mathematics departments gained new facilities, and most of the remaining areas were completely refurbished. New construction added to the space used by the administrators and a new cafeteria was built. Although we had to put up with many inconveniences like lack of classrooms, lack of heat, and hallways closed off between classes, it was all worth it. This was definitely a year of change and of building for the future. 10 Conttructlon Conitructlon 11 CHIU 90 ALL SANDWICH ES HAMBURGER 90 FRENCH FRIES 45 HAMBURGER 90 SLAW 40 COTTAGE CHEESE 35 VEGETABLE 40 FRENCH FRIES 45 JELLO 40 FRUIT 40 COOKIES BARS 15 (t EACH 3FOR 15 9 FRUIT DRINK 30 90 MILK 25 SHAKES 95 35 12 Signs .iW’t confuse school unth 23ianeuiand. lsneufand fun; School hard work. Assistant Superintendent Business 14 Administration HIGH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION Mr. Goerlitz's ability to be flexible was the key to the successful management of a school building under construction. It was necessary that he facilitate the construction and at the same time continue to provide a quality program for the students. He had to be prepared on a monthly, weekly, and sometimes even a daily basis to adjust the school program in such a way that it did not interfere with the construction while maintaining the continuity of the educational process. Two of the problems Mr. Goerlitz dealt with were the last minute relocating of classes due to excessive noise or fumes and the timing, with a foreman, of the lifting of tons of pre-formed concrete over a student hallway so that no students were in the area during this potentially dangerous phase of overhead construction. G Donald Goerlitz. Principal FLEXIBILITY WAS THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL YEAR UNDER CONSTRUCTION Tom Collins Director of Information Systems Mr. Collins is in charge of the man- agement of computer opera- tions. He also supervises the high school budget, the purchase of classroom equipment, and the maint iance of the building and grounds. Ann Jones Assistant Principal Mrs. Jones' responsibilities focus on student services and activi- ties. She admits new students, su- pervises student discipline, is in charge of textbook rental, and coordinates convocations. She is also co-sponsor of the student council. Charles Valier Athletic Director Mr. Valier's responsibilities include recommending personnel for coaching assignments, schedul- ing athletic events, and securing officials. He coordinates transpor- tation and assumes fiscal respon- sibility for the entire athletic pro- gram. He also coordinates the scheduling of events requesting school facilities for meetings. The awesome class of 1987 began preparing for an exciting around-the-world cruise on a luxurious passenger ship. This four-year voyage went in only one direction — straight ahead! Once we boarded the ship, there was no turning back Before we could set sail on the open sea. we had to select our leaders Chris Valier was chosen as captain of the ship Second in command was staff captain Mickey McConnell. As chief radio officer. Nikki Wllborn’s job was to keep in constant touch with the outside world. Purser Krista Emhuff handled all financial matters, and cruise director Tammy Pierce kept records of all cruise events Our young freshman football team showed us their strength as they won seven of their eight games These mighty men were cheered on by Krista Emhuff, Donett Heberer, Amy Raley, Shelly Stallman, and Sally Wasson. A touch of class was added to the vessel when two royal couples. Angle Claybrooke and Curt Winiger, Jenny Handel and Chris Valier, joined as passengers on the ship In the spring. Chris Putman, Joe Robinson, Mark Rhoads, and Nikki Wllborn, some aspiring young track stars boarded ship, while Jim Goodridge, Mickey McConnell, and Susan Osborn were selected as our most intelligent passengers. The end of our first year on board came quickly, but with our new knowledge of fleet operations and the friendships that had developed, we were ready to begin our second year. Mickey McConnell was chosen to be at the helm His crew of assistants consisted of Julie Carver, Nikki Wllborn, and Renee Milne. Early in the cruise, we were entertained by a cast of star performers portraying the cool T-Birds and Pink Ladies from the popular musical. Grease Showing our athletic ability was a fabulous reserve volleyball team who had an undefeated season with sixteen wins, no losses. Royalty on board were Nikki Wllborn and Chris Relnitz, Kelli Dieterle and Steve Fulton. We worked extra hard that year, and with the help of our cheerleaders, Donett Heberer, Shelly Stallman, and Sally Wasson, we won the spirit stick for the first time, taking this award away from our older competitors. Entertainment must be planned for a cruise, so our veteran actors again took to the stage and performed the children's play. Cinderella. Cinderella and the comedy. You Can't Take It With You. Both were enjoyed by all those aboard ship Operations on board were going very well, and our cruise was now half over We met our third year as passengers eagerly and with readiness Mickey McConnell was again chosen as the ship's commander His crew was made up of staff captain Steve Fulton, chief radio officer Nikki Wllborn, and purser Sally Wasson. Our Student Council hosted a state convention early in the year. The ship held hundreds of visitors for this event with the theme entitled. Unlock the World ... You Are The Key. With the help of Don Julian who served as skipper of the steering committee, it proved to be a smashing success. At this point, we were running low on funds for fuel, so we sold magazines earning over $21.000. This was enough to keep us sailing down the ship lanes for our remaining two years Becky Dunn was our top salesman, while Tammy Fleming came in at second I place Our varsity volleyball tea kept tradition going strong as they captured the sectional crown for the fourth consecutive year. Again, we were entertained as we watched our star on board. John Hall in South Pacific and were thrilled over the arrival of two more royal couples. Michele Knight and David Benton, Shannon Harmon and Mickey McConnell. Several passengers were chosen to represent us in an important week-long session with passengers from other ships. Jim Stickles, Jim Goodridge, John Hall, and Steve Fulton served as delegates to Boys' State, while Julie Carver, Susan Osborn, and Tammy Pierce attended the girls' session Our athletes continued to show their excellence as Eric TeVault advanced to golf regionals. and Joe Robinson advanced as far as state competition in track. One of the highlights of our spring entertainment was a visit from a hypnotist named Bob Reemes. Before our eyes, we watched as our very own Steve Fulton won a popcorn eating contest and found his shoes on the wrong feet, while Julie Carver and Jefl Hogan had a hot seat after three handclaps. The social events on board had been a little dull, so we hosted a formal ball for the older passengers. It was entitled Just For A Moment. and was enjoyed by all who attended As the year drew to an end. our varsity baseball team made us all proud with a sectional victory. Tony Garrett guided the team as the leading hitter. We had now traveled together for thousands of miles, and we had only a short journey of our voyage remaining. As we prepared for our final year together, we were determined to make it the best yet. Initiating activities on this fourth leg of our journey, we chose Stove Fulton as captain of the ship. His crew of assistants were Jenny Handel, Sally Watson, and Renee Milne, while Donett Heberer represented our rights as president of the student council The shipowners had voted to reconstruct our vessel, and although the benefits would not be completed in time for us to enjoy it. we showed our leadership ability and helped the younger, less experienced passengers to keep a positive attitude through the noisy construction work. Our dominance showed early in the year as we took part in the homecoming celebration winning the Scavenger Hunt. Spirit Chain, and Spirit Stick. Our king and queen, John Lang and Tammy Pierce, reigned over these activities along with their court. Troy Gentll, Renee Milne, Ward Harris, and Jenny Handle. Kristy Fulwider helped the Girls Swim Team through a good season, while the Boys Swim Team showed their strength as they won the Big-8 Conference. Under the leadership of Angle Anderson, Angle Claybrooke, Jenny Handel, Renea Lacy, Renee Milne, and Nikki Wllborn, our awesome volleyball team captured yet another sectional crown Things were getting a little dull aboard ship, so our actors and actresses entertained us on stage in the musical Guys and Dolls Performances by Edwin Ricketts, Joe Perrin, and Sean Kuykendall were especially enjoyed As it was time for homecoming activities again, we chose a new king and queen They were Todd Joyner and Jane Schenk. Others in the court included Jason Hlnderllter, Beth Kuebler, Dave Benton, Michele Knight, Mickey McConnell, and Donett Heberer. Our wrestling team deserved much praise as they had a season of 20 wins. 2 losses. This was the second best team record ever Chris Relnitz advanced as far as semi-state competition in wrestling. In the spring, a competition among the passengers called Almost Anything Goes was held In such games as the bat race. 5-legged race, balloon pop. and tug-of-war. we surpassed all of our competitors and won with flying colors. Three distinguished musicians were among us on board, as Leigh Curry, John Hall, and Scott Wlnzlnger were named as finalists in the annual Hagemann competition. The younger passengers held a formal ball for us. as the year drew to an end It was entitled Love Is Forever'' and was delightful Michele Doerfleln and Joey Robinson reigned as queen and king Saturday evening. May 23. 1987. our cruise wiH came to an end. After four years together, each of us will be left alone to begin a new voyage of our own As we go our separate ways, may everyone of us keep the memories and the wonderful friendships with us in our hearts, and never forget these four years traveled together as they were the BEST OF TIMES! Vernon for a competing girls' cross country team. In years past, girls have partici- pated in cross country, but there were never enough to make an official team of five members. Leading this year's team was sophomore Lani Schroeder. She finished 9th in the Big-8 meet, en- abling her to be honored as an All-Conference team member for the second straight year. An experienced boys' squad, consisting of ten se- niors, had another year of ups and downs. They com- piled a dual meet record of 2-2, and placed 7th in the Evansville Sectional. Their leader, Alan Veatch, placed 9th at the Sectional advancing him to the Re- gional at Jasper where he finished 32nd. The numbers really helped us to have a winning sea- son, said Coach Kandy Gibson, “and as a result almost every school record was broken. Leading the team to success was senior Kristi Fulweider who set new records in the 200 Free (2:10.67), 200IM (2:26.44), 100 Fly (1:08.19), and the 100 Backstroke (1:07.5). She was also a member of the record-breaking 200m Medley Relay (2:06.37), and the 400 Free Relay (4:18) teams along with Lynn Culley, Jennifer deDoming, and Shannon Neidig. The team finished the season with a 5-4 record, placed third in the Big-8 Conference meet, and placed sixth at sectionals out of a field of 17 teams. Coach Gibson looked hopefully to the future with her comment, “As more people take an interest in swimming, we will become even stronger. i 8l Top: Makin' waves during the backstroke. TENNIS TEAM FINISHES YEAR WITH A SMASH The combination of a difficult schedule and a relatively young team took its toll early in the year, and the Mt, Vernon Boys' Tennis team got off to a slow start The turning point of the season was a 5-0 shut out of North Posey. From then on. the varsity team rolled with eight victories to only three losses to finish the year with a 9-9 record. The season happened pretty much like we figured. commented Coach Brian Smith. However, it was impressive to see the way our players played each point with a lot of hustle and desire.” Playing the always tough 1 Single's position. John Reed, the team's Most Valuable Player, compiled a Big-8 Conference record of 6-1. placed 2nd in the Big-8 Tournament, and was named to the All Conference Team Also noteworthy were Junior John Rapp and Senior Brian Askren who played 1 Doubles and finished the year with a 7-5 record. Giving a glimmer of hope for next year was a strong JV squad which finished the season with 8 wins. 2 ties, and 3 losses. The Wildcat Cheer- leading teams work 1 1 months out of the year perfecting routines and practicing cheers As mentioned by Cheerleader sponsor Debbie King, it is indeed a grueling schedule at times. The hard work of the 1986-87 squad paid some good dividends. Several MVHS cheerleaders attended a cheerleading camp at Depauw University in June of 1986 and won the camp's spirit award. The award was very special because it was voted on by all those attending the camp The Freshman. Junior Varsity, and Varsi- ty teams coordinated their efforts in March of 1987 and placed first at the Tri- State Cheerleading Camp at the Universi- ty of Southern Indiana “All the squads worked together, and it took a lot of skill for them to perfect their work.” com- mented sponsor Debbie King. Both players were voted MVP's for the season, and Jones was also named to the Academic AM-State Team. BIG DAWG RISING For the Mt Vernon Wildcats, the football season of 1986 was one of great improvement and an indication of where commitment and hard work can take you. Although the season record was only slightly better than last year's, the effort and desire shown by the players were vast improvements Led by a quality group of nine seniors, this team never gave up or surrendered. Several games were lost by the slightest of margins and many breaks seemed to go the other way. Coach Meyers reflected. Our senior leadership was outstanding They led by example on the field, off the field, and in the classroom Younger players were influenced and shown the proper way of doing things This senior class has truly set a high standard for others to follow.'' The commitment of this team to achieve was obvious all year long, from the winter off-season weight program through a very intense summer conditioning program. The twenty-five players who opened the season against North Posey finished the season against Gibson Southern. The day of the part-time football player is over in Mt Vernon. Because of this commitment and effort towards football at Mt Vernon, the Big Dawgs is indeed rising, and. emphasized Coach Meyers sternly. The day will come when losing is unacceptable.” FALL HOMECOMING The Fall Homecoming of 1986 brought a change to Mt. Vernon's Homecoming Court. For the first time, the student body had the opportunity to select both a Queen and a King to rule over the festivities. In ad- dition to strength improvement through weight training, Meyers taught muscle anatomy and car- diovascular conditioning in this class. Meyers also continued his after school weightlifting club, the Mt. Vernon Ironmen. This club was cre- ated in 1985 to produce stronger, more injury-resistant athletes, ? Vernon Wildcat Basketball team hosted the Wood Memorial Trojans for Winter Homecoming. The night started with the ceremonial crowning of Winter Homecoming Queen and King. Jane Schenk and Todd Joyner (right). The game was a rough one from the opening tip-off. with both teams trying to assert themselves on the court. Eventually. Mt Vernon got the upper hand and defeated the Trojans 76-65. However, the confrontation didn't end there As Senior center Jason Ashworth was shaking hands following the game, he was struck by a Wood Memorial player who was later dismissed from the Trojan squad. Three weeks later, the Indiana High School Athletic Association ruled that Wood Memorial and Mt. Vernon basketball teams were banned from playing regular-season games for the 1987- 88 and 1988-89 seasons To be certain, the 1987 Winter Homecoming was one not to be forgotten Below: Chelsea Sanders, crownbearer. and Gabe Meyers, ballbearer. are all smiles. Only the undefeat- ed 1967 team had a better season. First year coach Doug Hamm fired his wrestling cats off to a 9-0 start. The rest of the season they suffered only 2 more losses to conference champ Jasper, and sectional champ Princeton. Their successful season was due in part to some experienced senior leadership. 119 pound se- nior Chris Reinitz was named to the Big-8 All Conference team, won the sectional title, and placed third at the regionals which advanced him to the se- mistate. Senior heavyweight Mark Rhoads was also named to the All-Conference team. Anoth- er asset to the team was junior Steve Cox who climaxed his sea- son at the semi-state. If Steve's performance, along with that of regional qualifier Terry Phillips, is any foreshadowing for next year, the wrestling tradition at Mt. Ver- non may be back to stay. During the season, the Wildcat hoopsters posted a record of 7 wins to 14 losses, however, in 11 of their 16 games their margin of victory defeat was less than 8 points. Coach Brian Smith reflected that their season was not as good as they had hoped in terms of wins, but there were many good performances. He also emphasized that with the excellent record posted by the JV team, together with the returning Varsity performers, there was definite potential for a strong team next year. Award-winners for 1986-87 season were: Marc McNamara, Big-8 All Conference Team and Best Shooting Percentage; Tony Acuff, Most Steals (42 season); Todd Curtis. Best Scorer (13 points game). Best Rebounder (6.7 rebounds game). - BASKETBALL JV Basketball Team. Front (L-R): Kevin Carlton. Mark Turner. Brian Denning, Keith Goedde. Back: JV Head Coach Jim Hatfield, Mark Zickmund. KEEP TEAM ALIVE The boys' swim team had an- other successful season. They captured the Big-8 Conference title, placed third out of 17 teams in the Sectional, tallied a 9-4 meet record, and set new school records in over half of the events. Much of fhe team's success can be attributed to five top swimmers. Scott Funkhouser, Chris Schneider, Jeff Robb, Jim Culley and diver Danny Coburn were dubbed All-Conference team members, and those same five won individual sectional titles which enabled them to advance to the state tournament in India- napolis. Individual school records were set by: Scott Funkhouser in the 100m. Butterfly (54:18), Jeff Robb in the 200m. IM (2:13.4) and the 100m. Backstroke (56.3), and Chris Schneider in the 100m. JV FROSH FORESHADOW CONTINUING SUCCESS With both teams suffering only 3 loses apiece, the JV at 9-3-1 and the Freshmen at 7-3, it seems Mt. Vernon's powerhouse repu- tation will remain for at least a few more years. The JV, coached by James Hatfield, was led by freshman pitcher Scott Lowrey. The left- hander compiles a record of 6-1 for the JV, and also did some clutch relief pitching for the varsi- ty. With only a few juniors playing JV, many other freshmen contrib- uted greatly to their success. The Freshman were led by Robby Bulla who had a season average greater than .700, the best in the program. jv SCORES 6 Reitz 2 Mater Dei 14 Memorial 0 North Posey 6 Princeton 0 North 5 Castle 1 Reitz 4 Boonville 4 Boonville 3 Gibson Southern 10 Harrison 1 South Spencer Robby Bulla takes a power cut. Vernon Senior High School sponsored its first full academic team. Coached by Mrs. Bonnie Awe and with support from Mrs. Montreva Calhoun, Ms. Phyllis Barker and Principal Donald Goerlitz, the 1986-87 academic team competed three times with area schools. With subjects ranging from spelling to physics and even fine arts, the competitions challenged everyone. In their first competition of the year the academic spelling team travelled to Techumseh High School on October 16, 1986. The fifteen member team competed against seven other schools and came away with first place in their division and a second place overall. With the win at Techumseh behind them, the team faced an even greater challenge at Jasper on January 17, 1987. Six members prepared for months to represent Mt. Vernon at the Academic Decathlon. With the support of many teachers, the members readied themselves to give speeches and be tested on an individual as well as a team level. The team scored second place in the Super Quiz while Jason Burkett earned a silver medal in the Honors Division and Grant Beloat earned a gold medal in the Varsity Division. The last competition of the season came quickly. A thirteen member team was sent to North High School on April 23, 1987 for the Hoosier Academic Super Bowl. The team competed as six, three member squads in a wide variety of subjects. The English squad won first place in division two while both the math and the social studies squads placed third. The first year of the MVSHS Academic team showed that we are competitive in the tri-state area. With many returning members and many new members the academic team promises to become a larger part of MVSHS pride. Bob Reems, sponsored the Student Teacher Exchange, sponsored the Multi-Media convocation — Paradise , sponsored the Free Fare convocation and concert, sponsored the Great American Smoke-Out. sponsored a Coat-a-Kid drive, held a computer match-up dance, held a breakfast for teachers and staff members, and held the Senior Tea for seniors and their parents. Some innovations brought by the Student Council this year were the choosing of a Teacher Staff member of the Month, the Class Scavenger Hunt to replace the parade, and a Class Feud with Kevin Dee as Richard Dawson. The Student Council also held a retreat for all of fhe representatives to promote better student leadership. Several other things were created or partici- pated in to better the Council's leadership abilities. Several members of the Student Council attended the Indiana Association of Student Councils' State Convention at East Noble High School. For this convention, several members compiled an Honor Council display to show people at the convention what the MVSHS Student Council does during a school year. A Student Council Handbook was also compiled to help future councils be more organized. Over the summer, several Student Council members will attend a Student Leadership Institute to better their leadership skills. A group of rumor boys match their muscles to those of a group of senior girls while playing the new game “Lock-Up in the Student Council sponsored Almost Anything Goes. 134 Student Council Front: Susan Osborn. I thought living here would be something wonderful — fast cars, gorgeous women, and Me Donald's. The dream came true in the spring of 1986 when the mail brought a letter from AFS. I was accepted to be one of those 100 AFS students from Finland. My journey began August 12th when I left a small town named Hamina, to go to the airport of Helsinki. We flew to New York where we spent a few days getting used to the time difference. Finally we arrived in St. Louis where we were going to meet our host families. I was very excited, and there they were — a family I was going to spend a year with. Since then I have enjoyed staying here in Mt. Vernon with Mr. and Mrs. Mike Cash very much. Ever since I came to the United States, everything has been different. The first thing we did was to go to McDonald's — boy, I just loved it! The school year began the 25th of August. I was shocked! What - • ■ only six subjects, and a period lasted 50 minutes. In Finland we have approximately 14 subjects, and a period lasts about 40 minutes; and between the classes we have to go outside for about 10-15 minutes unless the temperature is below -25° F. A school day may start at 8:00, 9:00, or 10:00 A.M. and end at 1:00, 2:00 or 3:00 P.M.. depending on what kind of schedule you have. A school year lasts as long as it does here. At the beginning of the school year at MVSHS it was very hard for me because of the language, but the people here have been very helpful and friendly which kept me trying. And now that the school year is over I am able to communicate well. I have had so many memorable experiences. like skiing trips in New Hampshire and Colorado, water skiing at Kentucky lake, a baseball game in St. Louis, the Indy 500 race, concerts at Roberts Stadium, playing hockey in Evansville, and just being here. I played hockey in Evansville for about 6 months, and I got to travel a lot with the team. I want to thank Mike and Brenda Cash for taking me to Swonder Ice Rink at least twice a week and giving me this great opportunity, and a special thanks for hosting me this year I really enjoyed staying with them. I also want to thank AFS and all of you people here in Mt. Vernon! I had such a great year which I'll never forget! Thanks!
