HOOP-POLE Mt. Vernon Senior High School Mt. Vernon, IN 47620 THE BEST OF . . . STUDENT LIFE THE BEST OF ... This year, we have witnessed many new and old fads”. Reebok shoes. Coca Cola clothes, and printed jeans were born. Wool plaid pants, denim jackets, and anything paisley were reincarnated. Today, anything goes! Walking down the halls you'll find cropped jeans with flats, over-sized shirts with fashion pins, ankle-boots, two-toned jackets and jeans, and lots of layered clothes. Hair is just as important. Guys wear their hair longer, and girls are getting their hair cut shorter or wearing it in a bob . Television and music have also influenced the way we dress. We have seen the Miami Vice look, the Boss look, and the Madonna look. 4 Fads FADS! Fads 5 THE BEST (WORST?) The Mt. Vernon High School art teacher has retired to seek a position in the travel field. Miss Belleville will organize trips and vacations for travelers and is interested in guiding tours for a travel agency. She will also continue her own creative work in art. Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, her career has literally taken her around the world. She has traveled extensively in the United States, England, and the Far East. Miss Belleville served six and one half years in the United States Army Nurse Corps, where she attained the rank of Captain. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1963 and her Master's Degree from the University of Evansville. Miss Belleville began her teaching career in an elementary school in Ladue, Missouri as an art teacher. She then came to Mt. Vernon and spent ten years teaching art to elementary students at West, Marrs, and Farmersville schools. For the past eleven years, she has taught art at Mt. Vernon High School. Active in civic and professional organizations. Miss Belleville, has participated in the Evansville Arts and Education Council, United Arts of Greater Mt. Vernon, Art Education Association of Indiana, National Education Association, and is a charter member of the Alpha Chi chapter of Alpha Delta Gamma. The decision to leave the high school was a hard one for her. I've agonized about the change for a year now, she said. She also said she would never shut her students out and those who seek information will always find her willing to help. The students shall miss Miss Belleville, especially those who had her for a teacher. We all hope she has a very happy retirement and great success with her new travel career. Bon Voyage, Miss Belle- ville. Miss Helen Belleville Observing Lending a helping hand An expert opinion Lecturing class 10 Dedication FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT From quiet homes and first beginnings Out to the undiscovered ends There's nothing worth the wear of winning But laughter and the love of friends.” — Belloc. Well, what am I going to say about my year? It's impossible to put all that A.F.S. is into a few words. There have been a few tears but. a lot of laughter, a little loneliness but. a lot of love. All in all. A.F.S. has helped me grow as a person in more ways than one. The people at Mt Vernon High School have been great; South Pacific” was wonderful, and so were the people in it. There are a few people who have been amazing, and they know who they are I've been asked a lot of questions concerning New Zealand People ask if I speak German (I must admit, I did take conversational German this year). They ask if I visit Switzerland often, and some other even more incredible questions. I've actually introduced a completely new country to a few. School has been different for me. Starting at 8 10 was a bit of a shock to my system as was only having a half hour for lunch! In New Zealand, we start school at 9 00. have a half hour interval at 10:30 and then have lunch from 12:00 to 1:00. School work here is relatively less difficult than it is in New Zealand. Although you have more homework, study is more comprehensive, and there is a lot more pressure in our whole system At age 15 you are eligible to leave school. If you pass University Entrance you are eligible to attend any University in our country. The exams are generally 3 hours long for each subject. Our high schools have one more year than here. Our year starts in February and goes till the end of November. We have a trimester system. TINA WRAY Vegemite sandwiches and my New Zealand accent have caused much laughter and lots of good times I believe I've learned to speak Southern American, with some help from my Drama class. I could not have found a better family to live with, they have been wonderful I think this town and the people in it have a great deal to share with the world around them. I'd like to see some more M.V.H.S. students apply for A.F.S. I'd like to see them share their wonderful culture and backgrounds with other people around the world. I feel the only way to promote peace throughout this world is through understanding each other. That is what A.F.S. is all about I've learned much about America but most important of all about Americans. This is and has been a year in my life that I will never forget. I will never forget my Mount Vernon family and friends. I would like to think that I have left a little of New Zealand's culture in at least a few people's hearts. VERNON STUDENT COUNCIL UNLOCKS THE WORLD The words of the theme song, You Are the Key. written by seniors Nikki Crum and Mark Albin summarize in a superb way the ideas expressed at the convention and should serve as a guide and inspiration to all of us. 12 Student Council Convention Over 150 Mount Vernon Senior High School students, 20-25 faculty members, many people at the University of Southern Indiana, and many adults in the Mt. Vernon community worked together fo provide the keys to the fantastic Student Council State Convention. The convention was held at the campus of the University of Southern Indiana, October 12 and 13 of 1985. Student Council representatives from all over the state of Indiana now know MVSHS EXISTS! They were all impressed and MVSHS should be proud! There were many keys to the near perfect State Convention. Among them were setting goals, planning, working together, organizing, working until the job was done right, not giving up. praising one another, helping one another, spending the time and effort necessary to do a good job. and not being satisfied with mediocre results As many students found out. working together and getting along were not difficult. An expression of warmth and kindness was shown by MVSHS students toward their fellow workers. The key-note speaker, Mark Scharenbroich. inspired everyone present to grow by visualizing the positive aspects of life and encouraging the 'T CAN philosophy Some of his many challenges are paraphrased below They carry out the theme of the convention, Unlock the World . . You Are the Key. — Tell yourself what you want, not what you do not want — It is not how other people see you. it is how you see yourself. — Take risks, do not be afraid to be different or that you will be laughed at. — Make a dream list to guide your daily, weekly, yearly activities Nurture these dreams daily. DO IT NOW. — Discover the silver coins underneath, as well as on the surfoce — Move away from an I wish list to an I am list. — Adopt the I can attitude, eliminate I can't from your vocabulary. You Are The Key We are the ones that make the best of all we do. We are the ones that turn the gray clouds into blue. We are the heroes that we wanted to become. We are bound together so that we can overcome. If people would strive to learn to love their fellow man; Dreaming dreams of a brighter day. Creating a new and better place to be; Making new friends along the way. Chorus Open the door, you are the key. Bound together; just you and me. Sharing and caring; united and free Coming together; one family. 13 BOARD OF SCFIOOL TRUSTEES Seated from left to right are the Board of School Trustees for the 1985-1986 school year Helen McCormick. Freshman The first stop was in England. The crew consisted of pilot Aaron Kelly, co-pilot Tim Pierce, navigator Julie Railey, radio operator Jim Blakeman, an keeper of the flight log Craig Bauer; the cheerful young stewardesses were Dawn Givens, Jamie Powers, Andrea Dunlap, Greta Johnson, and Brandi McMurtry. There were several important passengers aboard, including distinguished kings and queens: Aaron Kelly and Jamie Powers; Tom Wathen and Beth Isaac. We also carried some valuable cargo — the distinction of being the first freshman class to win the float competition. Shortly before our first landing, we selected Tina Alldredge, Mark Albin, and Tim Pierce as the flight’s most intelligent pasengers. The first stop in England was indeed very worthwhile. Sophomore The second stop was New Zealand. There was a new pilot this time. He was Tim Pierce. The co-pilot was Tim Taylor, while the navigator and radio operator were Jamie Powers and Sherri Emory, respectively. On the way we added two new couples: Stacey Whoberry and Brandi McMurtry, Jeff Miller and Tammy Clay- brooke. This flight also contained several important people: Dan Hill doubled as a tennis player and an actor, while Marc Henn, Mark Albin, and Nikki Crum were veterans of the stage. Junior Our next flight to Los Angeles was very busy. The crew of Tim Pierce, Rick Baldwin, and Andrea Dunlap planned a big bash entitled “Now and Forever” for the senior passengers. It was very delightful. Again, there were many distinguished people aboard: Karen Hutton, a $1,000 magazine saleswoman; Brian Roos and Jill Weber, and Lee Reeves and Kim Boehman, as additional royalty; Tim Pierce, an actor from “Grease” and Beth Isaac, a fabulous volleyball player who helped her team to a sectional. Rusty Thomas, Marc Henn, Mark Albin, Tim Pierce, and their alternates Tom Wathen, Paul Burgdorf, Dan Hill, and Rod Murphy were chosen on this flight to attend an important summit with other boys from Indiana. Likewise, Mini Jain, Nikki Crum, and Amy Walker were backed by Joanne Goedde, Karen Hutton, and Tina Alldredge for the girls' session. Another passenger, Joe Rutledge, was chosen to represent our rights. Our transcontinental journey was very quickly nearing its completion. Before our final stop, we found a stow-away, Tina Wray, from New Zealand. Senior The final leg of our journey was to Mt. Vernon Senior High School. For the home stretch we again chose Tim Pierce and Rusty Thomas to complete the crew. Our royalty included JoEllen Jones and Evan Anderson, Beth Isaac and Rick Baldwin. Others included in their courts were Pam Cunningham and Dan Miller, Tammy Claybrooke and Brian Parkinson, Julie Railey and Paul Burgdorf, and Jamie Powers and Eric Boerner. Rusty Thomas, along with Tom Whaten and Tim Pierce, led a young basketball team through a very fine season, while Marc Henn, Nikki Crum, and Jeff Holden entertained hundreds over the “South Pacific.” As this journey reached its final hours, the younger passengers and a robot held a wonderful gathering for us entitled “Just For A Moment.” Tom Wathen and Jill Weber reigned as king and queen. Today we have reached our destination. Throughout this flight we have enjoyed several wonderful moments and made many friendships to last a lifetime. Indeed, this transcontinental flight has been one that will never be forgotten and was indeed the “Best of Times.” SENIOR ACTIVITIES Adair, Scott: Adam, Brian: Track 3, 4 Adams. The day we were forced to tell Our mothers good-by And has quickly grown into reality. It makes you want to cry. At times things did seem difficult, At times the situation extreme; But we have made our way through. We always held onto the dream. Dreams should be like roses That never fade in time, Like memories of the past years That are always in our minds. And now it has come upon us — The ultimate dream-fulfilled As we enter a new world. New dreams to be revealed. Always remember, as we. The class of '86, have shown: Dreams can come true. They are ours to possess. They are ours to hold. We started out carefree in life. Not ever dreaming this day could come. Remember, remember, remember Verse You and I will go our separate ways Occasionally thinking of our high school days. There will be joy and there will be tears As we remember these precious years. Remember, remember Chorus Will you remember me as your life goes by? Will you remember these times as once a part of your life? When you're down and feeling blue, will you remember me? 'Cause I'll remember you. Big Dawg known to the faculty as Coach Greg Meyers, came to us from Vincennes and under his supervision the little “Alleycat was born. This baby was forced to go out into the cold, cruel world and tangle with fierce opponents long before it gained enough strength to even walk on its wobbly legs. It got beat up, stomped on, run over, and smashed to a pulp, but miraculously it SURVIVED! Big Dawg will bind up its wounds, nurse it back to health, teach it some new tricks, and give it a big dose of determination; and next year, those tough guys in the Big 8 are going to be in for a shock because the Alleycat will be READY! 1 Our team held together through the good times 2 ... and the bad. The main part of the program was performed by the concert choir aided by the Junior High choir. The remainder of the program consisted of specialty acts which were conceived and produced by groups of students working independently. These acts had to audition for a spot in the program. Due to the number of people auditioning and the quality of the auditions, the concert was expanded to two performances. The choir selections were performed both nights, but the specialty acts changed. The May 10th performance was Mrs. Sallie Riblet's last public appearance. Knowing that her farewell speech to the students, the school, and the community would be a deeply emotional experience, she wisely taped it in advance. While the recorded message was saying goodbye, she passed out candy to the tearful students. 1. Marc Albin and A Crazy Little Thing Called Love. 2. The band began its yearly work at band camp to learn the fall marching show Upon return, practices were held twice a week from 6- 8 p.m. and sectionals practice with certain sections such as flutes, low brass, etc., were held when those practices were not being held The “official year began September 14 when the Wildcats took the field in competition at the Central High School Invitational and placed 4th. Next they traveled to Tell City for the Tell City Invitational. Septem- ber 28. where they placed 6th. This did become discouraging, so everyone worked as hard as possible for the Jasper District competi- tion. October 5. The band received a Division I rating which made it eligible to compete at Regionals which were held at Martinsville. Indi- ana. October 19. The Wildcats marched in the rain and mud. and despite losing shoes and getting their feet stuck in the mud every step, received a Division H rating. When the marching season was over, two new units were formed, the concert band and the winter guard The concert band members participated in many solo and ensemble contests. Many of the people who competed qualified for state com- petition. The concert band also competed as one unit and received a Division II rating. Also formed this year was Allusions . The club began its activities last October with the Student Council State Convention which was held at USI, and hosted by MVSHS. Following the convention, they began to work like crazy to bring many organized activities to the school. One of the first activities was their participation in the Football Homecoming Parade. They then worked for the Great American Smoke Out,a meal for parents, student directories, a student-teacher exchange, and the Senior Tea. They also revised their constitution. They also instituted a new policy called “work- on which considered non-members who willingly helped with activities, new members. One of the most memorable events that the Council planned was the Almost Anything Goes contest between the classes and the faculty. This event was to entertain and to earn money for a needy organization. The sponsors for this year's Student Council were Mrs. Ann Jones and Mr. Loren Evans. We believe an acquaintance with the civilization of Greece and Rome will help us understand and appraise this world of today, which is indebted to ancient civilization in its government and laws, literature, language and arts. We affirm, the JCL experience devel- ops responsibility, fosters brotherhood, promotes enthusiasm, encourages com- petition. inspires dedication and en- riches our total growth. I would like to congratulate this year's MV JCL for being one of the best — if not The Best” JCL club Mt. Vernon has ever had.” commented Miss Grebe, sponsor. The local JCL has had bread stick and M M sales, a spirit contest, and even bought a Quiz Wizord to help with future competitions. The club won first place at State Convention (see next page). More students from Mt. Vernon will go to this year's national convention than ever before to compete, enjoy and learn. 138 JCL MVJCL NAMED BEST IN STATE The Mt. Vernon chapter of the Indiana Junior classi- cal League (Latin club) received the honor of The Best in the State with a three-foot trophy at State Convention this year. The competition was held at Indiana University in Bloomington. All the hard work and personal effort finally paid off. commented Jim Goodridge. president of the MVSHS Latin club. The “Sweepstake Trophy is awarded to the school with the most points. Points are based on the number and place of awards. For example, a firsf place is worth ten points. They only lost one game all year. Top row I to r: Cathy Railey and Mini Jain. Bottom row I to R: James Stickels and Jim Goodridge. Certamen is a rapid oral quiz-bowl. Questions are related to Rome, Greece, and Latin. Mini Jain, pictured on the top right, won a $300 scholarship from the Indiana Junior Classical League. “The winner of this scholarship is considered to be the most outstanding Junior Classical League Senior, comments Mrs. Effie Douglas, Scholarship Committee Chairman. Mini was also a national officer — Torch U.S. Editor this year. She is only the second person to become a national officer from Mt. Vernon, she was elected Indiana Senior Classical League Historian for next year. Cathy Railey, pictured on the bottom right, was elected Indiana Junior Classi- cal Historian. As Historian, she will be responsible for making a state scrapbook that will be competing with other states at National Convention. To have such an outstanding year took time and effort from a lot of people but it was worth it, comments Jim Goodridge. Now the club is looking forward to national convention and next year. Due to the great showing at state convention, Mt. Vernon's certamen team will represent Indiana at National Convention. Members hope to do as well at nationals as they did at state. The winnings at State did a lot for the morale of the club. I hope this keeps up, and, finally, congratulations. The club deserved it. They worked hard to get where they did this year, concluded Miss Grebe. 139 FRENCH CLUB Front row left to right: Aimee Nelson. Dona Cohlmeyer. Jody Stewart. Mark Zickmund. Dan Miller. Vernon was the flatboat headquarters for Southern Indiana. IThe flatboats carried with them river pirates. In 1833. a fight occurred in the Mt. Vernon area that left quite an impression. It seems that the river pirates took it upon themselves to confiscate some property here. It was whiskey. A barrel factory stood nearby the wharf The men of Mt. Vernon met the pirates at the wharf with barrel hoops, poles, and barrel staves, and ran the pirates out of town. The fight was called “The Hoop-Pole Fight The surrounding area was also called the “Hoop-Pole Township. For many years, each graduating class of Mt. Vernon High School has tied ribbons of the class colors to a hoop which is kept in the trophy case, proudly displayed at the graduation ceremony, and willed to the class that follows. MVSHS students are proud to have a yearbook with the unique title. Hoop-Pole, which recalls a colorful episode in the history of Mt. Vernon. AUTOGRAPHS 168 Autographs
