After having seen quite a bit of Europe. I finally made it to the United States by being an AFS-exchange student. It has been my dream since I was ten years old to learn about what we call the American way of Life and see as much as possible of this big and diverse country. I am Dorit Sevcik. I am 18 years old and come from Austria, a country in the middle of Europe which is just as big as Indiana itself. Having lived in the mountains where I could ski almost daily in winter, the flat countryside here was very new to me. Also. I was not prepared for the high humidity of the summers here, and I had never even heard of air conditioning. We have frequent, heavy snowfalls, and we never get out of school even when it snows three feet in one night. I was very excited and scared when I first came here, but I found a wonderful family, the Valiers. and lots of new friends who made me really feel at ease. People here were very friendly, and I always had help when I needed it. There are many differences between the lifestyles of the people in the United Stated and Europe. Discovering the different customs of the United States made me more aware of the customs of Austria, too. The most remarkable differences are maybe that we have no drinking age. that we have to wait until we are 18 to get our driver’s license, and. of course, the school system. School is easier here. Even though the school day seems endless compared to the one in Austria where we have classes from 7:45 to 12:15. I liked choosing my subjects myself and finding that there were so many different ones to choose from. I was used to having 13 compulsory subjects each year, and now I could pick Woodworking. Spanish. P.E.. Computer Programming. Clothing. Choir, and Current Issues. Finally I would like to thank my family, my friends, and all the other people who made my year here such a great experience, and I hope to see some of you again some day in Europe! Dorit Sevcik Foreign Exchange Student Dorit Sevcik Hi American Field Service The American Field Service sponsored a trip to Columbus, Ohio on February 8th through the 10th. Teri Klauss and Dorit Sevcik left Evansville at 8:30 a.m. and arrived in Columbus at 7:00 p.m. They were met by Dan and Pat Miller, the host family. Some of their activities included attending a North Columbus High School basketball game. After the game the AFS held a party and dance until 12:00p.m. for exchange students and their friends. On the second afternoon they went ice skating and to Zaharako s, an old-fashioned, home made ice cream parlor. Teri and Dorit then went shopping in Columbus Mall. Later that evening a party was held at Columbus Youth Center with table tennis, roller skating, bowling, dancing, and basketball available. Sunday morning they were to attend church, but because of snow, were unable to go. Teri and Dorit went to the farewell luncheon and exchanged names and addresses with the other students. They left Columbus at 1:30 p.m. and arrived home at 6:45 p.m. 134 Booster Club Tony Acuff. Teresa Axton. Gary Dick. Mark Dick, Angie Givens. Carrie Heap. Donet Heberer. Joella Hickey. Dirk Johnson.
