We attended our first exciting day of kindergarten. We tried not to notice. As we walked through those huge doors. That little tear mom tried to hide. As she let go of our hand, Walking slowly from our side. Just yesterday. We had the third grade “smarts.” Why not? W’e were at the age ofnine. We teased the first grade babies, Not trying to be the least bit kind. Just yesterday. We climbed those steps to Junior High. No more recesses. Now we had to be to class on time. That’s when our days really started to fly. Just yesterday. We were those “green” freshmen. Searching to find the elevator on the second floor. Looking up to the seniors. Thinking we still had three years, Till we could be there. Just yesterday. We were those sophisticated seniors. Having people look up to us. As we watched our days get closer to graduation. Knowing good-byes would be a must. Tears of joy. Tears of sadness, Fears of tomorrow, But still gladness. Just yesterday. Have all passed. The hopes and challenges of tomorrow will last. As we say our good-byes, knowing we are free. We will always cherish our memories, As the class of '83 10 GRADUATION 11 GRADUATION I he Senior Class of (lass song — ('lass poem Class Colors and Cream Class Flower A Little Time Just Yesterday Burgundy ( ream rose with Burgundy ribbon JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM Queen Candidate: Heather Farley Kscort: Chad Pfettacher Queen Candidate: Kendra Curtis Kscort: Ken Tomlinson Queen Candidate: Michelle Reinitz Kscort: Mathew Hoehn Queen Candidate: Melanie Varner Kscort: Christopher McKIfresh Queen Candidate: Donise Heherer Kscort: Randv Giles Queen Candidate: Becky Starnes Kscort: Andy Weintraut Queen Candidate: Debbie Russell Kscort: Shawn Farley Prom Band Member Queen Candidate: Davita Johnson Kscort: Jeffery Stewart 1 SECTIONAL WINNER First row: Trina Tennison. Mrs. Etherton. Judith Etherton. Angie Etherton, Steve Etherton JAZMIN OLE MARIA ACHI and Jazmin de Maria Achi. Mv name is Jazmin Ole Maria Achi. I'm 17 yarn old and I'm the A.F.S. Exchange Student from Faraway, a small but beautiful country in South America. 1 live with my parents and my two sisters who are 14 and 8 years old. My home is located in Asuncion, the capital city of my country. It has a population of about 600,000 and is the seat of the governor of the Republic and the Chief political and cultural activities of the country Here my father works as a mechanic and my mother is a computer operator. I'm very happy to be here in the U.S. and to be able to know and to share your customs and to be a part of your society, but especially to learn your language Some of you reading this article may ask yourselves, “Why would one want to he an A.K.S. student ' I would answer by saying that an A.F.S. student has a lot of attractions, likes to travel and learn different culture , customs and languages. But I believe that the most important of all is to be like an ambassador of peace between nations. This is the principal objective of A.F.S. international, intercultural programs Several months ago when the A.F.S. office in Paraguay notified me that the Central office in New York approved me and that my destination would be Mt Vernon, Indiana in the I'nited States with the Ktherton family. I was so happy I couldn't believe it and at the same time I was beginning to ask my self. What would my slay be like in the U.S and what would my relationship be like with my new family? Would my poor Rnglish be better some day? But at heart I was sure that everything would be wonderful and with the help of God I don’t have any problems. My stay in the U.S has been wonderful, but the moat important thig is that not only did I learn about a different country and everything that this involve such as custom , language, etc., but I also learn to value my own customs of my country and learn more about myself Isn't this great0 Here in the U.S. almost everything is different than in Paraguay As for the climate, in Paraguay we have a lot of hot weather all year and the winter is not very long with low temperatures in the 40° F. no more than a month. We never have snow! Here I have seen and felt snow for the first time in my life It was a wonderful experience! School in Paraguay is very different. It begins at seven o’clock and is over at twelve o’clock so we can have lunch at home. We don’t have the same classes every day because the schedule varies, the teachers change rooms, and the student stay in the same room I like school here very much in Mt. Vernon because the student can select the classes that will be useful for him and can participate in school club . I am taking Art V. Economics. Food . Speech I. and U.S. History and I am a member of the Spanish and A.F.S. Club . In my nine months of slaying in Mt. Vernon I have had wonderful momenta and I'm sure that the best will come yet. like my graduation from Mt. Vernon High School that will recompense the loss of my graduation in Paraguay with my classmate of six years I will remember Christmas, the «now. and everyone I have enjoyed the maximum of each moment of my stay here, because this will help me to remember you with love when I will not be here anymore. Before I finish this 1 would like to thank the Ktherton family for all the love that they have given to me They are and will be forever my family, no matter about time or distances I will take them with me in my heart forever. Also. I want to thank the Mt Vernon High School, the Faculty. A F.S.. my friends, and everybody else that helped to make my dream become a reality’ Thank you for everything’ I will not forget you forever' Be an exchange student Jazmin Ole Maria Achi 4 00 CD brj O t ) CO | f1 O Jazmin de Maria Achi Jody Kay Alldredge Katherine Klizabeth Barnes Kristi Jean Barnes Jeffrey Franklin Bayard Jeffrey David Belcher Tracy Joan Benhrook Scott Robertson Bickham 'Peresa Kave Binklev Sharon Irene Bostick Vincent Allen Botta Cheryl l ee Bover Rebecca Lynn Bradham Michele Renee Brakie Michael Dale Brauser Robert l,ee Breeze .Jeffrey Paul Bush Marsalene Marie Bush Richard Allen Carl -lr Richard Troy ('as hi on Kelly Karl Champlain Dennis Howard Clark 4 - 00 «5 h-L rj O 02 CO f1 O R dney Scott ('lark Shane Koy Claybrooke Benjamin Robert Coburn .Jr. David Andrew ('ox •James Edward Cox ('athryn Dannelle ('urtis Michelle ('laudine Dallas Debra Ann Davis .Jeffrey A. deDoming .Jon Darrin Cox Ronald l,ee ('ox Stacey Lynn Cox Tammy Michelle Cox Mark Allen Culle Bruce Anthony Denning Jennifer Darlene Denning Kimberly Ann Denning Karla Oaye Dick Dino Christopher Duckworth Kristie Lynn Duckworth Melinda Gayle Duckworth Brian Wade Dunn Dale Andrew Disney Daniel Rdward Duckworth Donna («ail Raton James Duane Raton John Michael Raton Christine Diane Klliott O ►—3 C D CQ O h Oi CO Dale Bradley Kllis .lane Kllen Km huff Leslie Pearson Ksche Lori Ann Ksche Amy Kli al elh Kvans .Jonathon Craig Kvans nn Bene riseher I ina Marie Fisher Bari Alan Lander Karen (lav (Jeier Traev Lvnn Keldmann .Jeffery Shawn Kelly Karla Klaine Geuss Penny Kay Geuss Ben Louis Gibson Daniel I ee Goebel Tammy Jo Goldbach Darlene Kay Goedde Christopher Douglas Allison I ee Green Grannan Michelle Kae Greene Valencia Pawn Grindall Barbara Jean Gross Valencia Grindall S3 O HH £ H CO 00 CD h-1 O CO CO f O Jeffrey Charles Hahn Bruce Allen Hamilton Cheryl Diann Harle James Dale Hart Rebecca Ann Hawkins Mary Ruth Heard Kimi Hanna Hellenberg Holly Ann Hinderliter Janet Marie Catherine Michael Wilbert Hutton Robin Renee Johnson Jennifer Lynn Jolley Hoehn Lisa Annette Jolley Jana Lynn Jones Jeffrey Allen Jones John Alexander Kelley Mary Christine Kinsey Keely Kay Kirkpatrick Lori Jill Kissinger Monte Joe Kissinger Judy Ann Little Daniel Ludlow Lisa Michelle Maikranz Miriam Marie Manning 5DOh!z;bcc o h-3 CO CO Ofe HOiOO Curtis Lee McPherson Regina Kay Meador I aura Jane Mercer Brock Dwayne Miller James Cleveland Miller Pamela Suzette Miller Rodney Keith Miller Ronald ( lenn Mitchell Thomas Robert Moll Jeffery Allen Mobley Thomas Mark Nelson Kimberly Ann Neuman Brian Keith Niehaus Sarah Jeanette Ninness David Wayne Nation Jo Ann Nation c0WZhOPh 4 00 CD TjO CO CO f O Troy I ane Norrington Paul Allen Nurrenbern Thomas Ray Nurrenbern Larry Timothy Paris John Daniel Parrish Patricia Lynn Penrod Creg Alan Petersen Carla Cox Phillips Mary Katherine Phillips Janet I ee Poe James Marshall Pope Michael Sleven Pole Donna Sue Powers Kathy Marie Price Marrisa Lorron Price Lisa ('.ay Rabenstein Jeffrey Wayne Reagan Robert l,ee Reininger III Kelly Ray Ricker! In our appreciation the 1984 Hoop-Pole staff asks you to patronize these merchants. Without the support of these contributions the contents of this yearbook would he limited THE STORY OF THE HOOP-POLE In the early days Mt. Vernon was flatboat headquarters for Southern Indiana. The flatboats carried with them real river pirates. In 1833 a fight occurred that left an impression on the Mt. Vernon area. It seems the river pirates took it upon themselves to confiscate some property here. It was whiskey. A barrel factory stood close to the wharf. The men of Mt. Vernon met the at the wharf with hoops, poles, and barrel staves, fought and ran the pirates out of town. Small green willow branches that could bend without breaking were used for hoops on the barrels. The fight was called “The Hoop-Pole Township”. In later years high schools in the county took a hoop and a pole as their emblem. To a hoop attached to the top of a pole in New Harmony High School and in Mt. Vernon High School, class colors have been tied for years. Each graduating class wills this on to the class that follows. Mt. Vernon High School took the name “The Hoop-Pole” for its annual, and the first school newspaper was entitled “The Hoop-Pole Junior”. Taken from THE PLANK ROAD BY Anna E. Kelly MT. First of all we would like to thank the Faculty and Administration of Mt. Vernon High School. Without their cooperation this book would not have been printed. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Anna Berry, our advisor, for giving her time and helping us with our problems and mistakes. Lastly we would like to thank our very important advertisers, the business of our community, and students of Mt. Vernon High School for their cooperation and support. We hope this yearbook will keep fresh the best years of your life, your high school years. As we end this year of hard but fun work, we wish good luck to future staffs. Hoop-Pole Staff I ' ?
