President: David Sledzik Secretory: Michelle Anderson Treasurer: Kelley Johnson Historion: Karen Niemeier GRADUATION A TIME TO REJOICE i f Now Is the Time The post is behind us now; So stort to look ahead. Nothing we've ever done has been harder. It's a mystery to some How we've done the things we've done; But we just keep looking on. Lord, we are thankful for triumphs and defeats. We are ready for our tomorrows. Seeking respectful faces Wherever we discover new places. Now it's time to reolize Chorus It may be a new beginning; But be bold, be brave, and wise Let's use the things we've learned To go out and build our lives. Time goes by so quickly. Or so it seems, So now is the time to pursue our dreams. Lyrics: Robin Mileham Jeff Beste 1932 SECTIONAL WINNERS BASKETBALL First row: Curtis McPherson. Ronold Doyron, Jeffery Mobley. Mothew Hoehn. I am from Mexico, a beautiful country with a population of 72 million. There I live in Merida, the capital of the state of Yucoton, with my dod. mom, brother, ond six sisters. My dod is on engineer ond my mom is o housewife. It has always been my dream to come to o foreign country, particularly to the United States. My reasons for coming to the U.S.A. were to learn English and to know another style of living and thinking. I also think that these international programs help to improve the relationships between countries. Last April, they fold me that I was coming to Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Then I began to ask myself all kinds of questions like: What is my family going to be like? Am I going to like school? Will I be able to understand English? I hove been here four months and I hove already found answers to some of my questions. It is great to get to know a different country and live together with new people. Living in the U.S.A. has helped me to learn more about myself and to understand better other ways of living. I have learned a lot about the United States and, also, about my own country. I enjoy school here, even though it is very different from school in Mexico. My school in Mexico starts at 7 o’clock and is over at 12:30, so we get to have lunch at home. Students stay in the some rooms and teachers exchonge rooms. We do not have the same classes every day, because the schedule varies. This is the first fime I got to choose subjects at school, since in Mexico all the subjects are required. It is also my first time to come to school without wearing a uniform and being allowed to participate in school clubs. I am a member of the Spanish Club, AFS, and Booster Club. Here at M.V.H.S. I am taking Algebra I, U.S. History, Speech I. Economics, ond Physical Education. The things I like best about M.V.H.S. are the group activities, clubs, and the spirit the students show for the school teams. It is so much funl When I return to Mexico, I will study for my last year of high school, since this year does not count there. After that I have not decided what to do. So far. I have had great experiences but I am sure there are still more good times to come. One of them will be wearing a cap and gown for my graduation at M.V.H.S.. and another will be walking in, touching, and seeing snow for the first time, since in the part of Mexico where I live it is really hot and it never snowsl I want to thank AFS, school, my friends, and everybody else that mode if possible for my greatest experience of being an exchange student. MARIA ISABEL ROMERO FRANCO MEXICO : v rUS 'H, I? S LE NEVE MALLETT ■F :« ii How does it feel fo be on exchange student . . For me it has turned o dream into reality. If is very hard to describe the emotion one feels when leaving their country, friends and fomily to travel half way around the world to become part of a new fomily and culture. There are many questions and many emotions shed, but most of all It Is a time of unbelievable excitement. My name is Le Neve Mollett, and I am 18 years of age. And the exchange student for Australia. I am one of a million people, who live in Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. It is a very large and beautiful city encompassed both North and South by many sandy beaches, with a very tropical climote all year round. Australia and the United States have many similarities, but the two countries also differ in many ways. This is particularly prevalent when comparing Australian Schools with American Schools. Austra- lian schools tend to be much more serious, and this Is the first time I have ever ventured to school without wearing a school uniform. Here in the United States sport is an important port of the whole school system. There is nothing like it In Australian Schools. All our sporting organizations are separate clubs outside of the school cur- riculum, and I will dearly miss the many pep sessions, football and basketball games here. My AFS experience has been based on simple things, no new or complicated ideas but simple and everyday routine. Somebody once sold that the lessons for the future are written in the past. Well, my hopes ond desires for the future are token from my year here in Mt. Vernon; the triumphs, the failures, the good ond the bod, the laugh and the tears. Everything together has meaning for me. I hope these influences will be seen in what I will try to do . . . I am looking forward to the future, perhaps with so much idealism, but I Dm sure now that I can do something for it. I I want to finish by saying that I have really enjoyed my stay here en great! I want to thank AFS, Mt. Vernon mily, in particular, who not only took me ielr hearts, ond to everybody who has am come true. To all of you I will say thank you for being my friendsl in Mt. The students were Lance Mendelhall, Doug Steele, Brian Dunn, Tracy Word, and Tone-Elisabeth Anderson. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Hayden and spent Friday and Saturday night at the home of Mrs. Hoyden's parents in Grant Park, Illinois. On Saturday the group visited Meyer's Delicatessen where marzipan, German candies, sausages and cheeses are sold. At Schmid Imports the group saw books, calendars, gomes, steins, candy, German greeting cords, and gift items. After visiting the shops, where everyone spoke German, the group had lunch at the Heidelberger Fass. They enjoyed the meal, but they enjoyed the waitress, who tried to speak to them in German, even more. A visit to the tallest building in the world, the Seors Tower, was the last stop on the trip. Unfortunately the weather was not good and the view was disappointing. The group enjoyed the trip very much and are looking forward to visiting Germantown” again next year.
