Now is our time to •tep out and make new friends and memories. CLASS SONG Times Have Changed” Words Lyrics by Jeanne Nix As we walk, down a rugged path looking on the things we’ve done. And we think of how the times have changed and the new life we have begun. Now we see ourselves moving on. The major chapter of our lives is closing now let’s make it right. But yet we’ve only just begun a brand new life that’s full of fun. We are looking into the future facing each problem and task. We are going to be successful We are going to be the best. They lost six one run ball games and continually lacked a leader with the bat. The team played well in the season, and defended their Sectional Championship well in beating Princeton and New Harmony before losing in the championship game to Gibson Southern. 2-1. The team finished the season with an 8-19 record. RESERVE BASEBALL The 1981 Reserve Basketball team was headed by their first year coach Jim Hatfield. The Re- serve squad played a 16 game schedule, and out of this they compiled a record of 7 wins and 9 losses. The Reserve team was predominately compiled of sophomores and freshmen. Coach Hatfield felt the team improved throughout the season. BOYS TRACK 1981 Scott Albin, Jeff Alspaugh. Eric Bibitlis. Scott Bickham. Darrin Bryon. James Cox. Mike Culiver. Dan Deig. Bruce Denning. Tone-Elisabeth Anderson. Betty Beste. Lee Beste. Cheryl Beste TONE-ELISABETH ANDERSON am dreaming! This is not real I am not going to see my family and friends for a whole year!?l What is my new ’’family'’ going to be like? How will the school be? Will I have any problems with understanding the Southern Indiana accent ? These are some of the thoughts that were twirlling around in my mind on August 4th. 1981. the day I left Norway to go to the United States of America. Lor one whole year! Oh. by the way: My name is Tone-Elisabeth Anderson and I am seventeen years old. This year I am living in Mt. Vernon as a member of the Lee Beste family. I am here as an AFS student. As I have already mentioned I come from Norway-, a long, narrow country on the Northwestern edge of Europe It is a pretty small country, with only 4 million inhabitants, but it is very beautiful. It is known for all its Gords and Mountains The midnight sun. which appears in the Northern part of Norway from the middle of May throughout July, has also done its part of the job of making the country known. My Norwegian family is a little bit different from the family I am staying with here. The Beste family consists of my host mom Betty, my host dad Lee. and my 'sister'' Cheryl who is also a senior this year. I am used to having a one year younger brother (Knut Erile), a twelve year younger sister (Anne-Catherine). a mom (Randi) and a dad (Knut) around. Both of my hostparents are employed outside of home. My ’’real” family is organized differently: My dad runs an accounting company with four employees, my mom is a housewife, which is quite a job with a family of five and a house to take care of! Norway and the U.S.may have several similarities, but the two countries also differ in many ways. For instance, the school system is different. Norwegian school is harder than American Schools and it is much more ’’serious”. You may have seven or eight classes a day. Each class is only 45 minutes long though, and we have a ten minute break between each class. This gives us the opportunity to go outside, and makes us more ready to start the next class. It makes the day go by faster, too! Besides, we don't have the same classes every day of the week. Our schedule varies. The classes I am taking here first semester are Physics. U.S. History. Advanced German. Government. Speech, and P.E. Second Semester I will have French. Psychology. Adv. German, U.S. History. P.E. and Economics. Here in the United States, sports is an important part of the whole school system. There is nothing like it in Norwegian schools All our sports clubs are separate clubs, and the activity goes on in the evening. I like the way you do it here with the different kinds of sports within the school It creates school-spirit, a word not included in the Norwegian people's vocabulary. There is one thing I definitely will be missing when I go back to Norway; the basketball games! It is funl I want to finish up by saying that so far. I have really enjoyed my stay here. It has been great! I want to thank AFS. the school, my family, and everybody who has helped in making my dream come true! To all of you I will say: Thanks for being my friends! Tone Elisabeth Anderson The Yearbook Staff has taken an extra special pride in assembling your 1981-1982 Hoop-Pole. In the past, the staff has become a sur- rogate family, with the sharing of new ideas or a newer concept. A hint with a smile was always guaranteed. It's a give-all organization, but when you are through, you can sit back and say, I’m through. I’m done. I have accom- plished something.” Laura Gross Club and Organization Editor Laura Gross: Llub and Organization Editor Mrs. Anna Berry: Advisor Lynn Lancaster: Sophomore and Junior Editor Carleen Tucker: Senior Editor John Crowe: Photographer Supervisor Kurt Young: Advertising Krista Wade: Junior Photographer Robin Coseboon. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The object of the National Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a de- sire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encour- age the development of character. The new members were selected last spring. The National Honor Society se- lects students based on their lead- ership ability, character, service, and grades. To be admitted have a 3.0 grade average for seven semesters, ju- niors with a 3.4 grade average for five semesters, and sophomores with a 3.7 grade average. The students are sent a letter tell- ing them that they are eligible, if they are interested. The student, then in turn, writes an essay based on their extracurricular activities and telling why they are interested. All names are then typed and sent to all of the teachers for an evalua- tion. the names are then sent to the faculty committee where they vote on the eligible names. If the stu- dents are selected, the student then receives a letter of acceptance and attends the initiation ceremony. New members are selected in the spring. s p o N s o R M R S. A N R A Y L E S m The goals of the 1981-82 Stu- dent Council were the upkeep of the tea machine, ping-pong tables, placing a salad bar in the cafeteria, buying speakers for the stereo in the cafeteria, and sponsoring both Home- coming Dances. The Student Council has also formed a scholastic awards committee to rate the different classes and a new food committee to test the food in the cafeteria. They also funded the completion of the Mt. The Student Council also sponsored a jump-rope contest for the Heart Association, and Student Council also hopes to sponsor the painting of the foyer doors, maroon and gray, and a tea for the mothers of the Seniors. We had positive feelings toward our class, but we needed guidance. We elected our class officers to lead the way. The class of 1982 elected Danny Choate as president. Becky Beste as vice-president. Michelle Anderson as secretary. Kelley Johnson as treasurer, and Karen Niemeier as historian. We had many active members of our class participating in sports, pompon. Esquires, and the fall musical, Carousel.” Our freshman football team deserved special recognition. They had an undefeated season which brought all of our spirits up. To cheer on our freshman teams were Faune Curtis. Sally Fuelling. Angie Floller, Janell Simpson, and Michelle McCormick. In the fall we had our first homecoming. Our football homecoming float was titled. Scramble the Titans . Shelly Cunningham, escorted by Jeff Robinson, served as our basketball homecoming attendant. Baseball season started in the spring. Several of the sectional winning players were in our class. This is a high accomplishment for freshman. As our freshman year drew to an end, we were looking forward to our sophomore year with courage and determination. As sophomores, we elected new officers which were Joan Floehn. president. Danny Choate, vice-president, Michelle Anderson, secretary, and Kelley Johnson, treasurer. This year our class participated in many more activities. f Our teams were cheered on by varsity cheerleader. Faune Curtis and Sally Fuelling. Reserve cheerleaders were Angie Floller, Michelle McCormick, and Janell Simpson. Our football homecoming float was titled. Washington Can’t ftatch-it”. Our attendent was Beth Maloney, escorted by Mike Lilleston. The musical this year was Lil’ Abner which starred Ritchie Dixon. Many more of our classmates participat- ed greatly in this musical. Our basketball homecoming came soon after the new year. Our homecoming attendant was Kelley Johnson, escorted by Ritchie Dixon. The spring play was. The Miracle Worker.” Lisa Merrill starred as Helen Keller. She. as a result of her splended performance, achieved the award of being chosen one out of the ten top actresses in the state. The spring brought baseball season also. Our team consisted of many members of the class of 1982. It peaked its season by bringing home the sectional crown. As juniors, we were experienced and helped the seniors lead Mt. Vernon High. Elected as officers were president David Maier, vice-president, Angela Jeffries, secretary, Michelle Anderson, and treasurer, Kelly Johnson. We were happy to be juniors, and it showed by our important participation in many varsity and reserve roles. Our football homecoming spirit was lifted when our float titled. Make the Tigers Extinct”, won the float contest. Our attendent Michelle Anderson was escorted by Gerald Goebel. The cheerleaders, Faune Curtis. Sally Fuelling, and Lisa Merrill, helped spread our spirit. The fall musical was Annie, Get Your Gun”. The lead role of Annie went to Faune Curtis. Another bright spot our junior year was wrestling season. We captured the sectional crown with a team consisting of several juniors. Our basketball homecoming was next. Sally Fuelling was chosen to represent the junior class. Her escort was David Sledzik. The basketball team, which included many members of our class, won the sectional trophy. They made a good showing in the regionals. but lost to Vincennes. Vincennes later won the state championship. There was one challenge we had as juniors, and that was organizing the prom. We made enough money by reaching our magazine sales goal which was over $20,000. The prom was titled. Castle of Dreams” and was held at I.S.U.E. We had two members of our class spend the summer in foreign countries. Jenny Kuebler visited Brazil, and Faune Curtis visited Germany. The time that everyone in the class of 1982 was waiting for had arrived! Our senior year was finally here! As seniors, we elected Faune Curtis as president. David Sledzik as vice-president. Michelle Anderson as secretary, and Kelley Johnson as treasurer. Robbie Stark was elected as our Student Council president, and Alan Schroeder was vice-president. Our spirit was lead by varsity cheerleaders, Faune Curtis and Sally Fuelling. Our spirit reached its peak during football homecoming. We won the spirit stick and the float contest with our float titled, Kick Their Ashes Cats.” Queen candidates were Robin Mileham, Peggy Meinert, and Julie Moore with their escorts. David Maier. Mike Niehaus. and Sean Farley respectively. Robin Mileham reigned as our queen. The fall musical. The King and I”, showed what talent our class has. Ritchie Dixon and Peggy Meinert took Ihe spotlight this year. Others participating were Dee Tomilson, Jeff Beste, Robin Mileham. Charlie McPherson, Faune Curtis, and Mike Deig. As we continue with our senior year, we will be looking forward to a great basketball homecoming and a terrific prom. The class of 1982, however, has already made its mark. It will long be remembered for the greatness of its members and their accomplishments. 45 3 O Mary Annette Allen Timothy Scott Allen Michelle Ellen Anderson Tone-Elisabeth Anderson William Daniel Askren Kimberly Diane Batteiger Timothy Edward Baumeyer Cheryl Ann Angela Marie Birkhead Rebecca Sue Beste Wanda Kaye Blackburn Rhonda Faye Blackburn Steven Allen Bober g Frankie Jean Bowman Cheryl Lynn Bradley Mark G. Because in a way you could say that was her style. You always knew she had Aaron on her mind. She’d say. He’s so special, gentle, and kind. But marrying him was her dream. Their day would come, so it seemed. She had her future all planned out. For her there would be no doubt. But now life for her will be the best. Because she’s with God. Aaron, and all the rest. Remember she will always be around. Because the memories of her can always be found. by Julie Rupp My trip to Krefeld. Germany will be an unforgettable experience. One might think that seven weeks in a foreign country is time enough to learn all there is to know, but in truth, not even the surface has been scratched. It was such a blow to suddenly find myself in a new world where the people and culture is different from ours in America. However strange this new way of living in Germany may have seemed at times, it was very pleasing. Everyday there was something to do. I was constantly tired, but there was no time to sleep. I could do that in America! We often went to tHp horse races, and when it was warm, swimming, rowing, or out for long walks. It was usually cool outside and one thing that took getting used to was that it never really got dark at night. There were always parties, parks and museums, and sometimes we would hop on a train and visit other cities which was exciting. In Dusseldorf fhere were thousands of Punk Rock people dressed in Bizarre clothes with wild hair do’s. Most of the cities are now modernized except in the older sections. You can still find, luckily, the quaint cottage- like houses and narrow brick streets, all very cozy and story book like. When nothing special was happening, there were discos, movies, and Chopping. I didn't realize before how far behind in fashion big Posey Cci nty is. After being in Europe, it seems as though we haven’t progressed much past the StadKge. One day the Americans and our German families took a four hour cruise down the famous Rheine River. Along the river’s banks were the grazing cattle, cute little villages, century old castles, and vinyards growing up the mountain sides It was more beautiful than I could ever have imagined. The last week of our stay was spent in West Berlin and we were lucky enough to visit East Berlin for an entire day. It was a wierd feeling to see The Wall in real life. All those history book stories came alive and I realized how lucky I am that I live in a Free country. Germany is a world unique from our own. The ways of thinking, living, and even eating are differet. German people are very sincere. Friendships and family relation- ships are deep and lasting. The German family I lived with was beautiful I had a Mom and Dad (Multi — Popi). a 13 year old brother. Stephan, a 21 year old sister. Angela, and two pet parakeets who woke me up every morningl I grew to love them very much. If you ever get the chance to live or visit in a foreign country, please go. But don't lust observe the new world around you absorb it. live it. take and learn from it. B R A 5 I L My name is Jenny Kuebler. 1 spent the summer of '81 in the country of Brasil along with 148 other Americans on the American Field Service (AFS) Americans Abroad Summer Exchange Program. For 2 months I lived in Braganca Paulista, Sao Paulo with the 8 member family of Tylpheu Villaca. Although 2 months is a relatively short time, I learned a great deal about the people of Brasil, their interesting culture, and their language (Portuguese). As a general statement, the people of Brasil are very friendly. I met many people who were very kind and wanted to educate me about their country. They are a very proud people. My Brasilian family consisted of Tylpheu (father). Querubina (mother), brother Marcos (18 years), and sisters Angela. Marli, Marisa, Marcia, and Sandra. I feel that my Brasilian family did every- thing within their power to make my stay interesting and very comfortable. They are all wonderful people and I can’t thank them enough for every little thing they did for me. Brasilian schools were on vacation the majority of the time I was there. Their classes begin at 7:30 a.m. and dismiss at 11:30 a.m. The students remain in the same room all day while the teachers go from class to class. The climate is reversed from ours. During our coldest months they're burning up, and while it’s sweltering here, it’s cold there (although it rarely gets below CP C.) The dress in Brasil is basically the same as ours. The popular thing there is jeans. U. S. University jerseys, and if you don’t have Adidias tennies, you’re a nobody. «dBL.JTw The food, also, is similar. The fruit in Brasil is wonderful! The lood there seems to be more natural, although they do have 3 McDotfelds and I saw a Jack in the Box. If you ever have the chance to travel, I encourage you to do so. It's amazing how much can be learnedl My thanks go out to AFS and especially my fantastic family here. This experience taughtSihe much. Brasil isn’t an entire jungle full of Indians and Canabals. It’s very modern and it’s even larger in area than the U.S., but most irt WTantT real live people liv£ there, people with problems and dreams {list like you and me. Chris Zickmund The 1981-82 Wildcat Varsity Basketball team has had a lot of obstacles to overcome this year to reach a successful season. A lack of height and team speed have been two areas which the Wildcats in 7080% of their games were inferior to their opponents. Experience was also a key factor to overcome as only one starter returned from the 198081 year. Coach Brian Smith, is in his first year of varsity coaching. With these situations in mind, the team has set goals of reaching a winning percentage of over five hundred for the season Also, the sectional championship is well within reach if the players continue to improve towards the end of the sea son. 108 Vincent Botta. Vernon was flatboat headquarters for Southern Indiana. The flatboats carried with them river pirates. In 1833 a fight occurred in the Mt. Vernon area that left quite an impression. It seems the river pirates took it upon themselves to confiscate some property here. It was whiskey. A barrel factory stood nearby the wharf. The men of Mt. Vernon met the pirates at the wharf with hoops, poles, and barrel staves, and ran the pirates out of town. The fight was called The Hoop- Pole Fight”. The surrounding area was also called the Hoop-Pole Town- ship . In later years, high schools in the county took a hoop and a pole as their emblem. A hoop is attached to the top of a pole in New Harmony High School and in Mt. Vernon High School, the class colors have been tied for years. Each graduationg class wills this on to the class that follows. Mt. Vernon High School took the name The Hoop-Pole for its annual, and the first school newspaper was entitled The Hoop-Pole Junior.” Lynn Lancaster. Laura Gross. Carteen Tucker. Krista Wade. Vernon Metropolitan School District for all their cooperation and assis- tance in assembling this book. We also want to thank our patrons because without their help this book would not have been possible. Most of all a very special thanks to Mrs. Berry, our advisor, for helping us with our problems, and having patience when we make mistakes. We have taken pride in putting together the Hoop-Pole. We hope that in the years to come you can look back to the memories we have captured in the previous pages. The Yearbook Staff
