MT. VERNON HIGH SCHOOL MT. VERNON,INDIANA 1981 HOOP-POLE EDITORS TERESA CHANDLER MAUREEN CRAM Harold Brown was a unique person. His life style was an example to both staff and students. As a teacher he was knowledgeable, yet terribly patient. As a coach he was able to instill a desire to compete while at the same time emphasizing sportsmanship and fair play. He was devoted to his family, church and chosen profession. He always found time to assist with community projects as a Kiwanian. Even when personally troubled there was a smile and kind word for others. Thanks, Brownie, for sharing and caring during the many years you devoted to the growth and development of the youth of Mt. Vernon. D MEMORIAL Mr. Harold V. Brown was a formal business teacher at Mt. Vernon High School. He is a past president of the Kiwanis Club and a member of the board of directors of the Greater Mt. Vernon Business Association, Treasurer of the Conservation Club and a member of the First United Meth- odist Church. Mr. Brown graduated from Evansville Col- lege in 1946 and was a 1940 graduate of Mackey High School. While in college he was student body president from 1945-1946. Mr. Brown will be loved and remembered by the many students he has taught over the years and by everyone in the community. He will be missed by one and all for his kindness and his love for us all. We realize how we've grown to understand one another Through our shared successes and defeaU. The times we have had will leave A lasting impression on our minds. It’s been a long journey Which is now coming to its end. Leading us to new paths Where each will travel his own way. As we begin our journey we'll be Like strangers entering new lives Each step forward places us closer To unlocked doors which we will open To find new people and places That destiny has sought for us. As we start, full of determination To face what lies ahead. We will overcome. Chorus: These tears of happiness Streaming down our cheeks portray the past We'll have forever, never to forget. Memories of days gone by fade Into our hopes for the future. Not just for one but for all. I stay with the Halls, a very nice family. We all have a lot of fun together and I’m glad to have such a home here in America. So far living in the states has been very enjoyable. Living in Mt. Vernon is a really great experience because so rtiany things are different from the way I used to live. Living in a different country has helped me learn a lot about other people. It's very interesting to see how others live and why they do the things they do so differently. It also helps me learn more about myself and it has taught me to see many things from another point of view. School here is a lot easier. Back in Switzerland 1 go to school the entire day and have more subjects but every day they are different My classes here at MVHS are Journalism. U.S. History, Econom- ics, Speech and Physical Education. I Like Journalism. My school doesn't offer Journalism and I was interested in it. and learning more about the newspaper. Not only is school different but I also learn a new way of living. 1 was very glad to have had such an extremely hot summer in Mt. Vernon. In Switzerland we have a lot of cold weather. It rains more in the summer and we have more snow in the winter, so I enjoy the sunshine here. What I miss are the mountains. I’m ne ised to living in such flat country like Indiana, but 1 have so much fun here that this little detail is easily forgotten. 18 Uduardp Behrens My name is FduarJo Joe Behrens I am a foreign exchange student from Caracas, Venezuela. 'I feel very happy to been chosen to come to America because I always wanted to have that new experience. I consider this experience to be most important in my life because I Imvc an 'SfrtjgatiofW Watnily. my country , and myself. I thirk that with this experience I xvill carn more about myself and wha want out of life. Also it wii open doors to help me think abo JHy future. Presently, I arrJivSng with the F.d Tracy family ber Ki Mt. Vernon. I think that n bicw family is very special time because they have opened thcirSiome without knowing mulh about me and welcome me as their own son. Tins has made me feel very good. So I believe the people here are very friendly and I feel very much apart of Mt. Vernon. Mt. Vernon High School is the first school I er attended where both boys and girls go to classes together. Also I have the opportunity to choose the subjects I like; not likcAiy1 country where you do not choc W n yhir own. The subjects r am taking presently are U.S. Histoly. tiow iment. French. Biology. The National Honor Society selects students based on their leadership ability, character, ser- vice and grades. To be admitted, seniors must have a 3.0 grade average for 7 semesters, juniors with a 3.4 aver- age for 5 semesters, and sopho- mores with a 3.7 average. The stu- dents are sent a letter telling them, that they are eligible, if they arc interested. The student, then in turn, write a type of essay based on their extracurricular ac- tivities and telling why they are interested. All names are then typed and sent to all of the teach- ers for an evaluation, the names are then sent to the faculty com- mittee where they vote on the eli- gible names. If the students arc selected, the student then receives a letter of acceptance and to at- tend the initation ceremony. s T C Ul D EC N I T L REPRESENTATIVES Seniors: Lisa Blackburn. Tammy Bullock. We knew that we had a great class with great potential. This potential showed through our officers: Kerry Marshall as President, Pauline Hoehn as Vice President, Kathy Alldredge as secretary, Carla Wood as Treasurer, and Tammy Bullock as Historian. Many members of the class participated in reserve and varsity sports which were usually for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, we also had many participating in the fall musical “Brigadoon,” also in the spring play “The Man Who Came To Dinner”, pompons, and Esquires. As soon as sports began, our spirit began to surface. Our Cheerleaders were Robin Herron, tammy Ricketts, Jessica Greenfield, Kathy Alldredge, and Carla Woods. We Cheered for our team during homecoming and won the spirit stick. This was the first time that a freshmen class had won the spirit stick. We placed second with our float, the theme, “Jam on in; Let’s Win!” Our football attendant was Mary Meinschein and her escort was Marvin Kraft. Next came basketball homecoming. Our attendant was Kathy Alldredge and her escort was Andy Winiger. We followed the year with great pride and new friends, we now were looking forward to our sophomore year. To lead us in the year ahead was President Pauline Hoehn, Vice President Mary Meinschein, Secretary Linda Hoehn, and Treasurer Marcie Tupper. We again had class members participating in every activity offered. The fall musical that year was “Carousel” and the spring play was “Our Town”. Our spirit was led by varsity cheerleaders Kathy Alldredge, and reserves Jessica Greenfield, and Nusha Hall. We won the float competition with “Pop goes the Titans”. Our football Homecoming attendant was Maureen Cram and her escort was Jeff Embrey. Our Basketball homecoming attendant was Cherie Lurker and her escort was Jim Scarafia. During basketball homecoming we won the spirit stick once again. We were fired up and ready to become the mighty Juniors. Our leaders for this year were President Pauline Hoehn, Vice President Maureen cram. Secretary Beth Niehaus, and Treasurer Marcie Tupper. We had many responsibilities in the varsity activities. We fulfilled the activities with pride and care. The fall muscial that year was “Li’l Abner” and the spring play was “The Miracle Worker”. The football homecoming attendant was Julie Mitchell and her escort was Andy Kinsey. We went on to win basketball homecoming spirit stick with the help of the varsity cheerleaders. The basketball homecom- ing attendant was Susan Key and her escort was Mike Culiver. We arranged the final plans for the prom. The theme was “Always and Forever.” It was held on April 12, 1980, at I.S.U.E. Our Junior year was finally Complete-Seniors at last! Our leaders for our final year are President Pauline Hoehn, Vice President Marcie Tupper, Secretary Jackie Van Haaften, Treasurer Maureen Cram and Historian Tammy Bullock. Also scott Wade and Eric Emhuff lead student council as President and Vice President. Our representatives of our spirit are varsity cheerleaders, Nusha Hall and Kathy Alldredge. We won the spirit stick for both football and basketball homecoming. Our three candidates for football homecoming were Lisa Moore, Jessica Greenfield, and Shelly Wampler with escorts Andy Winiger, Lance Merrill, and Alan Isham respectively. Lisa Moore was crowned queen. Our Basketball Homecoming queen candidates were Lebra Hanes, Pauline Hoehn, and Joanie Mathew with escorts Greg Brown, Alan Junker, and Steve Durham respectively. Lebra Hanes was crowned queen. The fall musical this year was “Annie Get Your Gun” and the spring play was, “The Odd Couple”. Other accomplishments of our class members were plentiful. We are now setting out to accomplish our goals and show this world that we are truly a class of great potential. PATHS TO TOMORROW Prcsidcnt-Paulinc Hochn, Vice Presidcnt-Marcie Tupper. Scott Prctzsch The 1980 Mt. Vernon High School Tennis Team was a first in the history of MVSHS athletics. The team started the season with three strikes against it. First of all there was no place to practice except for the public tennis courts at Brittlebank Park. Secondly, tennis was a new sport at MVSHS and no one knew what to expect from the competition in our area or in the newly formed Big 8 Conference. Thirdly, there was a coaching change made three days before the first meet. Ten regular season meets were scheduled, 7 away and 3 at home. The varsity ended the season at 6 wins and 4 losses. Also, the reserves, although playing fewer matches, ended up with a 5 win 2 loss record. In the Big 8 Conference Tourney at Jasper, the Wildcats made no advancements. Also, after receiving a bye in the first round of the Evans- ville Sectional, the Wildcats were eliminated by Evansville Bosse, 4 to 1. Seven seniors formed the nucleus of the squad, and junior Mike Niehaus who started in mid- December. contributed greatly. The 1980-81 wrestling season held in store some very interesting and rewarding moments. This year's varsity team compiled a winning record of 10 wins and 5 losses, placing second in the Big Eight conference and returning the Sectional championship to Mt. Vernon. Some of the individual accomplishments were Ron Dayton Jeff Pharr being named to the All-Conference Team. Placing first in the Sectional were Ron Dayton. Jeff Pharr, Dan Choate, and Stu Johnson. Runner-ups were Matt Hoehn, Pat Kuykendall. Tony Weber, Greg Brown and Tim Allen. For the second year in a row by winning the 119 pound class in the Rcgionals. Sophomore Jeff Pharr advanced to the Semi-State Meet held in Bloomington. He placed fourth in that Tournament. RESERVE AND FRESHMEN Eduardo Behrens, Greg Brown, Kelly Blubaum, Mike Dcig, Matt Hochn. Pat Kuykendall, John Octh, Jay Ransford, Mark Renschlcr, Floyd Schaffer, Tim Thayer, Kurt Young. One of the most promising aspects of this year's squad is the number of members that will be returning next year. Not only was the varsity successful in their dual meet record but the reserves had a 14-1 mark and the freshmen were 8-2. Much can be said about the accomplishments of those who will be returning; however, the loss of individuals like Chris Dayton, Paul Nurrenburn, Greg Brown and Stu Johnson will not be overcome easily. Mr. Merritt expressed his appreciation for the dedication, loyalty and hard work that each member of this year’s squad has contributed to make this a successful program. Our trip to Italy was one thing I’m sure we’ll never forget. It was an altogether different experience from anything we’d dreamed of. We were all very lucky to go and happy to return. We saw things that we had talked about but didn’t expect to sec. Some things weren't quite what we expected, although most of it was. We even saw some unexpected things, like Iranians. There were little shops and bars up and down all of the streets. Unfortunately, only a few people spoke English. At least just enough to make us listen. And we spoke just enough Italian to let them know that we weren’t interested in buying. We also had to learn some of their ways of life, like changing money to Lira and the metric system. It was all very fascinating. We’re glad we didn’t miss it. Old fashioned mill for grinding meal at Pompeii TRIP TO ITALY The Statue of Apollo at Pompeii. Today, Babcock Wilcox continues to design and build some of the most efficient energy systems in America. Fossil and nuclear steam systems that help electric utilities provide power and light for the nation’s homes and businesses. Systems that power industry by burning industrial wastes and turning them into usable steam energy. We’re continuing to investigate new' ways to help America meet its energy needs. Babcock Wilcox engineers are exploring new energy technologies such as solar, magnetohydrodynamics (Mill)). fluidized bed, ocean thermal energy conversion and geothermal energy. For us to continue our work in the future, we’ll need teams of educated, talented people dedicated to finding the right solutions to America’s energy problems. We encourage you to continue your education, so that someday we may call upon you to join our team and help us meet the challenge of developing new technology to take care of America’s energy needs. The flatboats carried real river pirates. It seems the river pirates took it upon themselves to confiscate some property here. It was whiskey. A barrel factory stood close to the wharf. The men of Mt. Vernon met the pirates at the wharf with branches that could bend without breaking that were used for hoops on the barrels. Mt. Vernon became known as a town that you “better mind your manners or be beaten by hoops and poles.” In later years high schools in the county took a hoop and a pole as their emblem. The hoop was attached to the top of a pole in New Harmony High School and in Mt. Vernon High School, class colors have been tied to it for each year. Each graduating class wills this on to the class that follows. Mt. Vernon’s newspaper was entitled “The Hoop-Pole Junior.” j 1 The Yearbook Staff would like to thank the students, faculty, and administration of the Mt. Vernon Metropolitan School District for all their cooperation and assistance in assembling this book. We would also wish to thank our patrons because without their help this book would have been next to impossible. ! We have taken pride in putting this yearbook together. We hope that years from now you would look back T V° yearb°°'c to recall a face, an event, or an activity.
