Martha Ogles. Antje Krantz. and Paul Ogles I, Antje Krantz. always wanted to spend a year in a foreign country. I was very happy when I had the opportunity to come to the United States. I had already heard a lot about the States and Mt. Vernon before I came. Four years ago, my sister. Dorothea, spent a year as an AFS exchange student in Mt. Vernon. The same family, the Ogles, that my sister stayed with invited me last May to stay with them. In my new family’s house there isn’t anybody of my age, but I don't feel lonesome. There is always something to do. My German family lives in Hanceu, near Frankfurt. My father is working there in a feedmill as a foreman. My mother stays home and takes care of my little brother, Johannes, who is nine years old. My sister, Dorothea, is now 21 years old and is Studying in Frankfurt, majoring in physical education and English. School is very different here. In Germany, we don’t have the same classes everyday. School lasts only 4 to 5 hours a day instead of 7.1 like my classes very much. It is not boring for me to have the same schedule every day. My classes are; Spanish, art. F I . US. History, clothing and English I am especially interested in art, languages and sports. After I finish school in Germany, I want to go to an art school. Now l am working on the potter’s wheel. I enjoy it very much. I am also a member of the camera club for one of my hobbies is photography. In Germany I enjoyed playing basketball for 3 years. Therefore I tried out for the girls basketball team. One of my plans while I stay in the States is to earn my driver’s license. Since I am a private exchange student I have the chance to earn my driver’s license before I'm 18 years old. Also it is less expensive. Before I go back to Germany I would like to visit more parts of this country with my family. 35

'ew days after I arrived fashiol 34 Exchange Student EXCHANGE STUDENTS Marty Ran»ford. Greta Ransford. John Ransford. Jay Ransford. Patricia Campos. and Ruth Ransford wor My name is Patricia Campos Ramirez, and I am from Costa Rica. (Ramirez is my mother’s maiden name, and it is customary that children keep that name with their father’s name until they marry). It was a surprise for me to be chosen as an AFS exchange student because there were many applicants in my country. In 1978 my family had an AFS student from Germany in our home. I like the opportunity to learn a different language and have the experience of living with another family. Before coming here. I had questions about what i should do when I got to my new home, or what I should say to the people. In the first I used my dictionary all the time! My family in Costa Rica has six members. My fat in a medical clinic. My mother is a fashionist, one who clothes. My brother, Edgar, was an AFS exchange student in New York fouAears ago, and he is now going to the University of Costa Rica. My sister. Jertty, is sixteen. She is very friendly and is in the tenth grade. My grandmothe|l my father’s mother, lives with us in our house She likes cooking very much. 1 like the tortiall.is Costa Rica is a small country in Central America located betwi Nicaragua with the Pacific and Atlantic oceans on each side, mountains and beaches. My city, Heredia, is in a central valley mountains. In my city, we walk to school and downtown. We rainy and dry. I have never seen snow The temperature is Costa Rica has a democratic government. Every four years for president and representatives by secret ballot. Our government is similar to the United States Government, but we do not have an army. AFS International selects families for the students. My family here is very different from mine in my country, but I like them very much. I live with the John Ransford family. When I return to my country, I will finish my last year of high school. Then I must take tests to go to a university and hope to become a dentist. I want to talk about my experiences in this country to help new AFS students know more about the differences and similarities of our countries. My AFS experiences will help me have more mature ideas about decisions for my life.
