Even though I knew that this year was going to be full of personal efforts of trying hard to understand a new language. I was looking forward to meeting new people and learning new ways of life. Since I left my home in San Salvador, El Salvador, in Central America, I have found this and even more. I arrived in Mt. Vernon on August 5, just in time for the Riverfront Fest. s I became a member of the Steven’s family which consists of Gene, Phyllis, Mike, and Michelle. I really enjoy and appreciate being in my new home, which is quite different from my family in El Salvador. At home I have two sisters and one brother, all younger than me; Ruth, 13, Raquel, 12, and Rene, 11.1 was 16 when I came to the U.S. My Parents are both heads masters in the school system. My mother, Rubidia, is vice principal in a grade school and my father, Rafael, is a sophomore counselor in a business high school. When I go back to El Salvador, I have to finish 1 xk years of high school before attending college where I plan to study either civil engineering or psychology. The climate in my country is similar to that of Florida. Some of the things that I have enjoyed for the first time are water skiing, and playing in the snow. I have always wondered what snow is like and now I have found out. I enjoyed watching football, expecially when we went to Purdue to see a Big Ten game. In my country we have soccer and not football like you have here. I appreciate the opportunity that AFS has given me and I have gained much exper- ience that will help me in the future. Tomorrow's here and we didn't see it start Dear friend, did you hear the words of time as they passed us through the wind? Where did they begin? Now the time has come for us to go along our way. Qur tomorrow began yesterday — buy we didn't know .. We just can’t realize the laughter in the air. my friend was then Where did it end? Or did it pnd? Now we begin to build our lives until the end of time We only hold the memories of our Laughter Through The Wind. This is the cost — have we won or lost? The future's here for us and the past has gone away, but we still have our bond that links us back among the years and still holds now. It says we're friends, forevermore. My friend, this will soon be the past, as you know, the time moves very fast. Everyday has a new beginning, but the evening comes and we begin to sigh, and sometimes we still cry. Yesterday has vanished and our lives are now unfolding, but our Laughter Through The Wind never dies .. Christa Lynn Schelhorn :mSIS 4 $enior James Lyle Walker Born: March 8, 1960 Died: July 5, 1978 Lyle Walker Lyle’s untimely death came at a time when he was entering into a phase of life he had been looking forward to for a long time. Among his interests were sports, hunting and automobiles. His ambition was to work on cars and that was becoming a reality as preparations were being finalized to set up a garage for him to have his own business. Lyle loved music. He played base guitar and often would get togeth- er with friends in a jam session. Lyle will be missed. His opporutnity to contribute to this world has ended but he has left many lasting memories to those who knew and loved him. Harold Kraft Born: October 4, 1961 Died: December 15, 1978 Harold Kraft To Harold: You gave us something That never will be forgotten Your life was so short Yet so packed, full of. light, laughter, and love. We all knew you We all loved you What you gave us was More precious than gold Memories of how you were Memories of good times Enjoying your music Your smile, your love We have these to sustain us Though hard it will be Thank you, Harold For giving us this great gift By letting us know you And thank you, God For sharing him with us Those short seventeen years. Melvin Waters Melvin was very quiet and shy but when he was with his friends he could get “rowdy . When he was in class he participated in “good ole’ classroom arguments” and he could get quite vocal. No matter how heated the discussion was Melvin would smile right down to the last word. He would fight hard for what he believed in, was persis- tant and didn’t like to accept defeat. Melvin liked cars and worked hard for one of his own which he was proud of owning. Melvin will be remembered by his friends at school because he liked to be with people. He has left everyone with many happy memories of a smile always when you saw him and a friendly greet- ing. SENIORS AND JUNIORS During the 19th century, Mt. Vernon was considered flat- boat headquarters. In 1833 a fight occurred that left a lasting impression on the Mt. Vernon area. It seems that these so called river pirates took over the taverns, filled their bellies full of whiskey, and commenced to rant and rave through the town, the town’s people became fed up with these activities and they went down to the river front to the barrel factory and grabbed hoops, poles, and barrel staves and used them to run the men out of town. The town was eventually called “HOOP-POLE TOWN. When the Mt. Vernon High School came into existence, the word HOOP- POLE was used as their emblem. RICK GRINDAU, PHOTOGRAPHER ALAN TURNER. LaDonna Pfettscher, and Russell Roehr The sole purpose for the founding of the Latin Honor Society was to reward and honor eligible Latin students for exemplary performance in their study of Latin. It is purely an honorary society, membership in which is merited by a Latin student's maintaining a 90% or better average per year. There are no annual dues or conventions. The presentation of the Latin Honor Certificates is annually a joyous and happy event for the honored Latin students. s 0 c 1 E Cindy Utley 3rd year Latin Student 2nd year Latin Honor Society T Y 1 Melanie Ayers.
