GOLF 15 TRIP TO MEXICO I I ROW 1 L to R: Connie Redman, Shelly Crist, Carolyn Parrish, Diana Tucker, ROW 2 L to R: Karen Grey, Debbie Main, Darlene Kueber, Velvet Hanes, Lee McCarty, Tom Farrell. On June 10th we took off for Mexico. The trip consisted of many things, both expected and unexpected. The itinerary for Mexico City involved a tour of the City itself and the University of Mexico, a trip to the Pyramids and the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco, and many encounters with the Mexican people. The trip to the Aztec Pyramids was very interesting. One pyramid offered a fantastic view after many, many steps of climbing to reach the top. The tour of Mexico City included a trip to the University of Mexico where the Olympics were held in 1968. We also viewed their library which is well known for the beautiful drawings on the outer wall. The Floating Gardens of Xochimilco were disappointing. It was a bit muddy and lacked the color which was shown in their brochures. We had a gorgeous view of the ocean, where the majority of us went swimming after a shopping trip. It was only after a scary six hour bus ride that we arrived in Acapulco. The trip was fun filled and very rewarding. It came to an end on June 15th when we returned only to find our luggage had been left in Mexico City. Billy Martin Cole Cleta Collins Bruce Steven Givens Gary Wayne Hancock Robert Eugene Hargrove Charles Eugene Houchin Stanley Ludwig Andrew H. Missey Lorna A. Weiss FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT feared I would have a communications problem with my family but this was soon resolved. My new family proved to be nice, friendly, and more than OK'1 people. I really enjoy and appreciate being in my new home. My Chilean family consists of my Father Juan, an employee of the Post Office in Santaigo (the capitol of Chile); my mother, Maria, who does community work for the needy people in Santaigo; my brother Mauricio, 19, who works in the Post Office; my brother Claudio, 17, a senior in an electronics school; and my two sisters Cecilia, 14, and Juanita, 11. I am 18 years old and was born on November 2. 1958. I live in the center of my country, where the climate is very similar to Southern California. This year held a big surprise for me because of the many snows and very cold weather which I have never experienced in Santaigo. This permitted me to practice several sports that I have never known before--ice skating and tobogganing. The toboggan was easy for me to master since it is similar to a sport which we pratice on the beach in the summer. But learning to ice skate proved to be very hard. I want to tell you my first experience with ice skating . . . The first day that I tried, I saw another person skating-this looked very easy. Later I put on my skates and went on to the ice with some friends. After several seconds my my friends started to call, Where are you. Carlos? . . . one . . . two times they called. Here, here, here! dumb boys . . . I was flat on the ice, very scared and unable to pick myself up. Now I can ice skate better but what was the cost? . . . I will not tell you this. If you want to know the answer, first ask, How is your back or . . . ? School here is very different but I have many opportunities to learn about new and different things. In Chile each high school requires 12 subjects during the year which you study at various hours during the week. The type of subjects are philosophy, physics, sciences, The people of our time look at traveling as a means of communication, a way of enjoying nature, a way of discovering the scenery, a way of investigating for oneself the mystery and the poetry of a beautiful universe. I, Carlos Escobar, an American Field Service winter exchange program student from Santaigo, Chile, am a part of this universe. I arrived in Mt. Vernon on August 12, 1976, when I became a member of the Glenn Jacobs family who live on Blackford Road two miles from Mt. Vernon. My American family consists of Glenn, Wilma, Debbie, John, and Alan. At first I w- hile attending Mr. Vernon High School I took ?3 ,in social r' mathematics, and physical classes in social studies, typing, French, English, id physical education. I belong to the French Club, AFS, and Key Club. I enjoy watching all sports and especially enjoyed playing on a soccer team in Evansville. I am very interested in understanding the sports in the United States because I believe through this knowledge I can understand more about the personality of the people. I'm interested in football and did try to become a icker for the team. Later I entered wrestling which oyed very much even though it is very hard . I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in practicing this MPH ...r......interests are in ■ - arts and theater and music--American rock and concerts, and modem. My hobbies are making 1 SfHeiir native sculptures, playing osing on the guitar, and very type of music. 1 like people and discuss and thereby make new dancing to K! ”” f Chl h°fin9 t0 ttend lj?e Urj i HSty and plan to .major in psychology or pursue a medical career.
