Randell Robert Kris Simonsen -• Iph E. Young I feel the 1975-76 school year Is an extra special time to come to the United States as an American Field Ser- vice winter program exchange student. As the U.S. celebrates its 200th birthday, I have the opportunity to learn about the people, the land, and the history. My German family lives in Hanau, West Germany. My father, Reinhard, is a foreman of an American feed plant, Natrena, in Hanau. My mother, Karin, stays home to take care of my little brother, Johannes, who will be six in April, 1976. My only sister, Antje, will be 14 in April. I have always been interested in the United States. When I was younger, I read every available book about the U.S. pioneers and trappers. Because of this interest, I became quite excited upon reading of an opportunity to see the States first hand. Leaving home was sad but I had so much to look forward to. Johannes had not realized I was really leaving so it was hard to leave him. I flew with other AFS students to New York City. We spent the night there and had meetings. We then boarded buses for our new states. I spent 17 hours travelling to Indianapolis with a stop in Columbus, Ohio to let some kids off. Our new families met us in the bus station. I don't know which side was the most nervous. Becky was so nervous she forget to take the pictures she wanted badly! Now I was finally with the family I would stay with for nearly a year. We spent the weekend getting to know each other. On Monday Mom had to start school. Becky and I came to MVHS to enroll and plot my path. I signed up for Economics (with Government second semester). Art, Spanish, U.S. History, speech, and gym. I especially enjoy gym because I am very interested in the American sports. When everyone signed up for clubs, I signed up for JCL, GAA, and AFS. School is very different, but I came to learn about new and different things. In Germany, the type of school I attend goes through the 13th grade. The other two types of high schools go to the 10th grade. To attend a university, you must to to the gymnasium. When I return to Germany, I will attend the gymnasium for an additional one and a half years before entering the university. My main interest are sports, languages, and art. My two favorite sports are bas- ketball and swimming. I have studied German, English, Latin, French, and Span- ish. My newest interest in art is the potters wheel. I feel very lucky to have come to Mt. Vernon. The people here are and have been friendly from the beginning. Everyone went out of his way to help me learn and adjust to the new surroundings and customs. Becky helped me with my homework while I was adjusting to the new system. The whole household at 23 Park Ridge Drive has become my second family. This relationship will not change, even when I return to my native Germany in June. The loss of practice facilities as woll as gate revenue has been very trying. Without the full cooperation of all the coaches, players and students I doubt if we could have done nearly as well as we did. Delbert Pace Athletic Manager The closing of the gym has caused numerous inconveniences to the school and athletic department- During the winter, five teams that normally have separate practice and dressing facilities were forced to reschedule practices to utilize one gym and one dressing room. We are now using the dressing facilities under the bleachers, but not the gym floor and some exits. The most damaging aspect of the whole affair, however, has been the effect it has had on the financial status of our athletic department. As you know, no tax dollars are used to sup- port the athletic teams. All money for uni- forms, equipment, and expenses of the ath- letic teams comes solely from the gate re- ceipts of the athletic contests. The closing of the gym has severely limited these receipts dicing basketball season, placing our athletic department in some financial difficulty. Tom Collins, Coach The boys' physical education and athletic programs are at a great disadvantage. Usuali' the 9irls seem to suffer from a limited use of facilities, but in this situation it has little af- fected my program for the girls. Coach Valier, McNamara, and Jeffries have been very congenial in scheduling their basketball practices in the small gym. Yes, we had to wait a few times for Iho boys to clear out of the locker room, but I believe the sight of the opposite vex helped to relieve tome boredom of day to day practice- Becky Tucker, Coach Queen Candidates and Escorts Julie McCalment Rich Renschler Dorothee Krantz Tom Scarafia Denise Ervin Jeff Witt Queen Dorothee 1976 BASKETBALL HOMECOMING Crown and Ball Bearer Chad Toelle Laney Fowler 107 Freshman Att. GIRL’S BASKETBALL TEAM 108 I During the school year of Flk¥ Jl 1975-1976 the MVHS 1W choirs did many things. We started off by singing everyday in class. Our first big project was the Ha?Sra musical South Pacific . A large number, perhaps seventy-five percent of first, second, and third jpTnllll period choir, not forgetting the Esquires, was invol- linHmll ved with this production. Before we knew it, the Christmas program was HH coming up. We put a lot of time and effort into both the set for this convocation and the wide variety of Christmas songs we sang. On Feb. seventh the Solo and Small Ensemble contest was held at the University of Evansville. The Mt. Vernon Choir came home proud with many Superior and excellent ratings with twenty five people going to the state contest. During both February and March we prepared for the Posey County Music Festival. Many singers chosen from our choir for the select choir preformed in this concert. Also during this time we were getting ready for the large State Ensemble Con- test. Our big event in May was the annual Pops Concert. It was one of the most enjoyable events of the year. Of course we also sang for Baccalaurate. All in all it proved to be a very busy and rewarding year for the Mt. Ver- non Sr. High Chorus. In January we had photographers come in and take pictures of each person to put together to make a com- j posite of the entire choir. First Period Officers; President-Ralph Boerner, V.
