Editors: Sherry Carey Ruth Ann Smith 2 T. i L tA o'aho MS f3T A Time for Friends 9 A Time for Sports 1974-1975 Exchange Student I'm a foreign exchange student from Pizaeus, Greece who came here through A.F.S. (American Field Service), an organization seeking peace all over the world. Every year thousands of students have the opportunity to come for one year to the United States ty and attend schools, greet people, make friends, and make their country known to Americans. U.S. High ' School students tiien travel to other countries for C three months of the summer and do the same. K The A.F.S. student lives with American families as if they were natural members of that family. My | American family is Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Bostick, 57 Park Ridge Dr. who are very nice, friendly, and all- I right people. I enjoyed staying with them. . My family in Greece consists of my parents, Mr. £ and Mrs. George llias; my two older brothers; Athan- S nassios, 20, who was an A.F.S. student at Engle- wood, New Jersey, and Paul, 18, who was an A.F.S. student at Joliet, Illinois last year; and three sisters; Mary, 15, Souloc, 13, and Irene, 4. My parents are both headmasters (principals) in high schools. I am 17 years old and was born June 15, 1957. While going to school here I took classes such as U.S. History, Spanish, Choir, Gov- ernment, English, Economics, Band, and World Philosophy and was a member of Span- ish, French, A.F.S. clubs, and a student council representative. I also participated in the Musical Play Oklahoma . I enjoy watching all sports and like playing soccer, volleyball, basketball, ping-pong, and tennis and I partic- ipated in intramural basketball. I like American rock and roll music, concerts, and play the piano and flute. I speak, write and read Ancient and Modern Greek, French, English, Spanish and Latin. I plan to become a lawyer, a sociologist, or a psychologist. I'm hoping to attend the Univer- sity of Athens after graduating from M.V.H.S. I like to make friends, learn, discuss, and exchange ideas and have fun. I also like M.V.H.S, its organization, and enjoyed the clubs and extra curricular activities. The A.F.S. experience gave me a chance to know and meet new people from U.S., Brazil, S. Africia, New Zealand, Europe, and Argen- tina. I will always remember and appreciate my many friends and opportunities. f m We de.d-ic.att thii 1975 ue.at.book to MRS. Tom Scarafia announced the candidates for queen. They were Lesa McAtee, Jayne Ann Schutz and Ruth Ann Smith. Representatives of the classes were Debbie Erwin, Junior; Kayla Aldrich, Sopho- more; and Connie Goebel, Freshman. j 1950’s DAY! One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and go. Cats, go! It started out as nostalgia which was evident on 1950's Day at MVSHS. It was here where you could see the old time rockin' and rollin' of the past, which was demonstrated by Sue Small and Debbie Erwin. Then there was the slicked back greasy hair, the mean look- ing sun glasses, and the white T-shirt. They along with white bobby socks and oxfords helped your class to have it made in the shade. CROWN EM DAY Hats here, hats there, hats everywhere. Once there was a tale that said, A hat makes a person If this is true, then hats at MVSHS gave each student a personality. The variety consisted of raccoon hats, baseball Eft.k I - .2 Rock n' Roll fleet SPIRIT DAY ♦ i - ifl r l Bobby socks??? Let's bop on down to the malt shop. SPIRIT DAY consisted o buttons, pins, pennants, or anything to arouse and show the WILDCAT SPIRIT. Classes came together to show interest, enthusiasm, and teamwork by using every- thing from drums to horns during PEP marches. On COLOR DAY the fash- ion was maroon and gray to show respect for our school and its colors. NVfWI COLOR DAY Movin' on!! 89 Cathy Holt; Crown Bearer Robby Hooper: Football Roses for a Queen Jayne Ann Schutz who was escorted by Kirk Blackburn, was crowned in a pre-game ceremony October 18th, 1974. For many years MVSHS has not given the girls a chance to become involved in sports until recently. The girls have finally been given the chance and they are doing a fine job with it. Many do not realize the hours of prac- tice the varsity and reserve girls put into volleyball. From 4:30 until 7:30 each night you will find the girls practicing. They don't stop at playing a few games among themselves. They run, drill, exercise, and work hard. Both varsity and reserve have done well this year, and have improved mentally as well as physically. The girls were given the chance and they have shown that they can work as hard and as long as the boys and do as well a job. Way to go Netters! R e s e r v e 103 Pam Baird 104 Reserve Can you see a game without cheerleaders? They are always there. To many, it seems like their job begins right then, but it does not. Practice begins in the summer twice a week. They then go to cheer- leading camp for one week to learn new cheers and chants to bring home to promote spirit. They help plan pep sessions and go soliciting for the ath- letic department. When one game is over they start getting ready for the next Wildcat L. to R. Vernon was considered flat- boat headquarters for Southern Karen: X Indiana. On these flatboats were people of mischievous character. In 1833 a fight occurred that left an impres- sion on the Mt. Vernon area. It seems that these so called river pirates would do as they please when they came to town. They took over the taverns, filled their bellies full of whiskey, and com- menced to rant and rave through the town. Finally the townspeople became fed up with this activity and decided to do something about it. A barrel factory stood close to the river. The men of Mt. Vernon went down and grabbed hoops, poles, and barrel staves from the factory and with these ran the rivermen out of town. Mt. Vernon became known as a place along the river where you had better mind your manners or be beaten by hoops and poles. The town was even called Hoop-Pole Town. When Mt. Vernon High School came into existence they used the word Hoop-Pole as their emblem. The Newspaper was even called The Hoop-Pole Junior. It has now be come the name of our MVHS Yearbook. Marching Wildcats! R. Bledsoe, M. DeKemper, K. Stedfield, K. Griswold, Y. Beavins B. Baro, C. Moye, L. Becker, P. Ungethum, D. Rueger Pep Band is a select group of students who are members of the MVSHS Band, who are chosen by Mr. K.V. Bryant, music director. Mr. Bryant appoints only those students who are the first chairs of their instrumental section. When you go to a pep assembly, a home basketball game, or any other activity involving the spirit and support of our high school you will usually see the Pep Band. The Pep Band bolsters the spirit of spectators by adding a touch of music to the gathering. Take this music plus a little cheer and you have a successful combination of Wildcat Spirit. Students of MVSHS would like to offer their gratitude to all Pep Band members for their assistance in backing the Wildcats!! FLUTES: Mary Allyn, Charles Bostick.
