It was one of die greatest moments of our time. President Richard Nixon These words, expressing the mood of the nation following man's first walk on the moon, expressed our feelings as we made our first walk down die halls of Mt. Vernon High School. Our first small step toward class unification began with football homecoming, 1969. As a typically green freshman class, we turned out a typically green freshman float, Run 'Em Over Cats. During basketball homecoming activities, we were proud to crown freshman Jugs Pfister as Queen of die Jokers. High spirits soared as the annual freshman tourney neared. Mt. Vernon, acting as host school, and Bosse set the stage for the final showdown, but disappointed Mt. Vernon came out in second place. With the coming of spring, also came the beginning of a new football field. Dedication ceremonies for Memorial field were held in September of our sophomore year with Donald Goerlitz presiding as new principal of M.V.H.S. As football homecoming once again rolled around, a more experienced sophomore class created a float that we thought was a sure winner. The judges did not agree though. Before we knew it, the first half of our high school career was nearly over. Highlighting the close of our sopho- more was the capture of the first regional crown ever earned in any sport for Mt. Vernon High School. The 1971 baseball Wildcats proceeded on to semi-state competition where they were de- feated in a heartbreaking extra-inning champion- ship game. With the coming of our new upperclassmen status, also came the change of our previous dress code. As spirited juniors we plunged into an all out effort to raise money for the annual junior-senior prom. Our class achieved the honor of attaining a higher magazine sales total than any previous class at Mt. Vernon High. Sporting our new drivers licenses, many mem- bers of the class sped around town gathering boxes and other junk for the non-fire. Much to our surprise (?), the non-fire turned out to be a bonfire! With football season behind us, out thoughts immediately turned to the coming basketball season. With high spirits soaring, the 19-1 Wildcats entered the Princeton sectional with the assurance that a part of the SIAC crown would would lie theirs. The mighty Wildcats came out on top with the first sectional title in four years. Not only was the 1971-1972 basketball season great, but we also copped the first wrestling sectional title ever! With winter sports coming to a close, our class began preparing for what we hoped would lie a different and exciting prom. In contrast to the traditional prom setting in the gymnasium, our class presented the Garden of Eden at the Mt. Vernon Elks Club. As our senior year arrived, many of us found ourselves anxious but cautious about what the future would bring. Determined to make the 100th graduating class the best ever, a unified senior effort resulted in the building of the superior float we had attempted to attain the previous three years. We were proud to crown our first queen, Diane Wildeman, to reign over the 1972 Football Homecoming. With the begin- ning of second semester, we began to look for- ward to our final basketball homecoming as students at M. V.H.S. We crowned Carolyn Paul as queen of the 1973 court. With basketball season behind us, the class of 1973 began to make final preparations for the long anticipated graduation exercised. The first of the long lines formed as we patiently waited for our cap and gown measurements. As the time neared for us to send our graduation announcements, many members of our class were bestowed with such honors as the D. A. R. Citizenship Award, Nat- ional Merit recognition, Hoosier Scholarships, and various other academic awards and honors. Baccalaureate services, commencement exer- cises, and our high school days were over. From beginning to end our class history has been recorded. 1973 marked our last walk down the halls of Mt. Vernon Senior High School, just as it marked man's final walk on the moon. This mission has ended. Our future; however, spins dreams we must fulfill. The first band directors, were to name a few, Bill Pirtle, Bob Padgett, Billy French, and Frank Cofield. In 1958, our present director, K.V. Bryant joined the staff at MVHS. At that time the band consisted of about 45 members who had as their drum major Dennis Noon, who is now director of bands at Oakland City High School. Mr. Clifton Merrick joined the staff at MVHS as assistant band director and is still a valued member of the music department. The band has made an enviable record in State Fair competition, having made two 10th places, a 14th, 19th, and 23rd in the years in which it was a competitor. The band has dropped out of State Fair competition because of the cost, choosing now to go only every four years. The band members also do well individually. For the past seven years, the Mt. Vernon musicians have come away from the District Solo and Ensemble Contest at the University of Evansville with more superior ratings than any other school entered. The Marching Wildcat Band also has its share of honors. It received Superior ratings in every State Marching Contest which it entered except one and that was the first year it entered in 1959. The band does not go to the State Marching any more, choosing instead to compete in the Evansville West Side Nut Club Festival, which occurs at the same time as the Marching Contest. In the four years Mt. Vernon has been in the Nut Club com- petition it has received 4th, 5th, 3rd, and 2nd places respectfully. Mariata Moll - Director 1972-1973 Cheerleaders BELOW-All the fifteen cheerleaders started the new school year with a witty skit to show their SPIRIT! Remember.. .we're the cheerleaders, we've got pep.., Sports Many times girls sports are neglected, never to be seen in the yearbook; but this year let us view girls in action as they struggle through activities planned just for them. In the FAR LEFT is Miss Genie Whorton who was the coach for the Girls Volleyball team this year. Mrs. Coni Fritz sponsored most of the other girls sports. Fantastic-has to be the word to describe Golf-1972. The team, consisting of eight outstanding members: Mark Durham, Marc Brooks, Bruce Porter, Jack Rudibaugh, Jim Burgess, Dave Burgess, Rodney Buchanan, and Scott Frederking completed a fabulous season by bringing home MVSHS's FIRST SECTIONAL VICTORY in Golf. 123 1972 The Mt. Vernon Wildcat track team ended the season with a 2-6 record. Some of the per- sonal achievements were made by Terry Crawford, a 1972 Jr., who broke the schools record in high jump with a 6’T' jump. Terry's jump made a new Memorial Field record as well as a new school record. Dave Hoke, a 1972 Frosh., was one of the best high hurd- lers. His best run of the season was 16.1 seconds. Bullard pulls onward to stay ahead. Shelby keeps movin' on all the way down the track! Track R. Moll and Seifert rest up for their next race. There were sixteen runners who were winners of letters. Youth Advisory Council The mayor's Youth Advisory Coun- cil was a new organization this year. Three members were voted on from each class at the beginning the school year. It was the job of this council to try and give a voice in the community affairs for the youth of our town. These students went to all council meetings and were given complete freedom of speech. The main job of the youth council was in trying to acquire funds and a location for the new youth center in Mount Vernon. Much progress was made and the youth center will be in operation by fall. Each year hereafter members will be elected to replace the Seniors who have graduated. This council can only function with full participation from the rest of the student body, because it is the voice of our youth. 6 All School The all school party was held on May 5th at the high school. There were various contests including tug-of-war, pie-eating, bike riding, and bubble gum blowing. Following the contests there was a dance in the school gym. r t y Ph « 8 9 SENIOR DISTINCTION DAY 1973 Valedictorians - Pamela Seifert Clifford Renschler Salutatoria ns Katherine Keck James Maloney Awards Winn Deborah Bonthall Connie Brown _rk Buchanan Vickt toincron Jane Cheryl Essary Donnie Hast Katlierine Keck Elizabeth Larty Gary Frank Martha Fuelling: Charles Goodhard Andrew Hoehn Steven Jennings Katherine Keck Bruce Kohlmeyer Geoffrey Leffel Elizabeth Larty James Maloney Tina McCaiment Richard Moll Sliaron Pfister Laura Pugacz James Maloney Clifford Renschler Carol Richardson Kim A.
