MRS. ADELAIDE MARTIN The yearbook staff, on behalf of the class of nineteen hundred seventy, dedicate this Hoop-Pole to Mrs. Adelaide Martin, in appreciation for her years of dedication and service to the students of Mt. Vernon Senior High School. The life she lived, a life of giving herself to the future of America, began when she was called to substitute for an ill teacher at Mt. Vernon High School. Upon the return of the teacher, the administra- tion asked Mrs. Martin to remain as a member of the teaching staff. Accepting the offer, she developed her sincere teaching career in the following twenty-one years. Students in Mrs . Martin's classes left with a feeling of much gratitude for the deter- mination and patience she exhibited in teaching her subjects . Her guidance gave in- sight to understanding the subjects that have been and will become useful in their fu- ture years. Although she was strict in her classroom, she felt a close individual relationship with each student and seemed always to be behind him in his ideas and ideals. Knowing thoroughly the subjects she taught was only the beginning of her many varied interests and wide knowledge of the world around us, displayed through her never- tiring enthusiasm for life. Even though Mrs. Martin has retired from teaching at Mt. Vernon Senior High, she is not out of the education field but perhaps is more involved in learning and teaching, for she is devoting herself to many community activities and is traveling as much as pos- sible to broaden her wealth of knowledge.
