HOMECOMING 1963 A week of varied activities... special recognition for the players... talks on football... talks on school spirit... a bon fire and a pep session... frantic napkin stuffing as ideas became floats... a parade... a queen crowning and a VICTORY. 1. Modern Language Clubs 2. Rainbow Club 3. Class of '64 The highly successful All School Party, a welcome to new students and faculty, was spon- sored by the Student Council. Hawaii provided the theme and Sweden the queen. A stage show in the auditorium, dancing in the cafeteria. Hawaiian refreshments in the torch-lighted court — fun and entertainment for all. $ $ $ Christmas card sales enriched the treasury of the Class of '64 by a total of $712 as Gary Springer, Karen Bass and Phyllis Wade led in sales. $ $ $ The annual visit of the donkeys provided fun and entertainment for another capacity crowd while adding $225 to the Sophomore bank account. dt dt £ ?P •fP Clean Teeth for Everyone was the slogan of the Freshmen as they co-operated with the Den- tal Association in promoting the sale of toothbrushes. — Linda Billman, Mistress of Ceremonies, with Connie Seifert ($254.42) and Jim McDurmon ($205.84), high salesmen. Selling a phenomenal $5,392 worth of maga- zine subscriptions, the class of 1965 topped all previous sales. An en- riched treasury, numer- ous prizes and a turkey dinner were their rewards. Following last year's excellent COMEDY OF ERRORS we eagerly looked forward to this year's production of TWELFTH NIGHT. PROGRAMS Ann-Margret, aided by the Choral Department, brought us a glimpse of an inspiring Swedish custom, Santa Lucia Day. The Feast of Santa Lucia commemorates her Christian martyr- dom in the 4th century. The people believed that Dec. 13 was the darkest day of the year; and since St. Lucia symbol- izes light and goodness, she comes to the world on this day to bring light. The holy day is observed in Sweden every year and calls for ceremonies in all homes, schools and churches. A DREAM COME TRUE’’ Before a large crowd. Bill Price crowned Elaine Juncker basketball queen for the 1963-64 season. Candidates for the honor, as well as their escorts, were nominated from their respective classes, and the queen and her court were then elected by vote of the student body. The maid-of-honor, Nancy Hayden, was escort- ed by Jim McDurmon. Attendants and their escorts were Joan Hornback and Steve Hall, and Sue Ewing and Robert Burklow. The bearers of the crown, robe and basketball were Debbie Adams, Dawne Barnewolt, and Dennis Uebelhack; and Ann-Margret presented the Queen her roses. 21 Bettie Schreiber Class of 1964 Paula Schreiber Class of 1966 IN MEMORIAM JULY 27. 1963 Dale Esche Class of 1959 Sharon Esche Class of 1966 22 Mr. Richard Jarvis, Assistant Secretary; Mr. Clarke Anderson, Treasurer; Mr. Harold McCutchan, Vice President; Mrs. J. I had pressed my gown, ‘brushed my cap, and attended to innumerable small tasks, so it was with a sigh of relief, that I retired for the night. Sleep, surprisingly did not come swiftly. I tossed and turned for what seemed an eternity, as I ner- vously anticipated the event of the following night, my graduation from MVHS- A host of memories was running through my mind. Finally, I fell asleep. A vivid picture came to me. It was the old high school building at 6th and Canal Streets. I remem- bered how huge and ominous it looked as we fresh- men, 203.strong, entered this institution which was to be our home for only three months. Without too many difficulties, we fell into the pattern of scam- pering from class to class. We suffered the usual insults, bought elevator tickets, and went through the trials known only to plebes, but we were unconquer- able. The other classes learned of our enthusiasm in an unusual way—we almost caused the balcony to fall on them. Overcome by the school spirit which was to be typical of our class, we had stamped and stomped. The next assembly found us squeezed in the aisles and rear of the auditorium! I remembered the anticipation of moving into the new school. We had seen a bean field transformed into a building so modern that it was difficult to imagine its magnitude Our first basketball game played in the new gymnas- ium was on November 28, 1960, and a loss to North in no way dampened our enthusiasm. After numerous postponements, M Day finally ar- rived! Yes, on a rainy December 5, 1960, we made the trek to our new school, 700 Harriet Street. It was with definite feelings of nostalgia--yet with an eye to the future--that our locker contents were shoveled from one school to the other. The holidays were soon upon us; and carrying out the motif of the season, we had a Winter Wonderland Party. Ath- letically speaking, we won a holiday tournament. Our fine sports program was supplemented by the initiation of wrestling, and our Mat Cats pinned decisioned, reversed, and took down their foes. We elected our Basketball queen candidate as maid of honor. An event of dignity and triumph occurred on February 12, 1961, in the dedication of the new high school. Money is important, and we sponsored a Spring Picnic in our cafeteria to start our class treasury. Near the close of the school year, we crammed into school buses on our way to join thousands of other Tri-State youth in the enjoyment of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Many things happened in that Sophomore year. Of course, you all remember the space flight of John Glen. . . but do you remember Kiyoshi Sawamura, our Japanese exchange student; the introduction of cross country as a fall sport; the skillfully executed gym show by the Physical Ed. Departments; or the first appearance of the Rhythmettes, a new dance group. The ever popular donkey basketball game was played before a capacity crowd, even though a four inch snow covered the ground. For the astronomers, a telescope was donated to the school, and satisfying the journalists was the revival of the school newspa- per. Fads included yo-yos and circle pins. We gorged ourselves at the first Student Council Smorgas- bord and vowed the event would be annual! A high- light of the year was the choice of our class jackets. 92 From class member's ideas, a reality was born and we could hardly wait for the fall when we would don the brightly striped jacket. The year 1962-1963 was a tense one nationally. Bomb scares and a Civil Defense maneuver which called for our crowding into physical education dressing rooms were a part of the schedule of activi- ties at MVHS. We were upperclassmen now, and were we ever aware of our rank. A homecoming and a colorful parade highlighted our football season. We caught a climpse of the customs of other lands by attending the year’s first all school party--Christ- mas Around the World. We dived wholeheartedly into our magazine sales, and our efforts were hand- somely rewarded with a delicious turkey dinner. It was the winter of ice, snow, and sub-zero temper- atures, but our spirit was not frozen, as a reactivated Booster Club cheered our struggling Cats. In my dreams, I laughed through Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors as done by Evansville College. I saw again The Door to Yesterday and the one-act plays done by FLP. Our Junior-Senior Prom stood out brightly for it was the first open prom and the first prom to be held in the new school gymnasium. As evening in Paris was April in Paris for us, as we danced and danced beneath the splendid decorations. A few of us attended the General Electric scholarship banquet. We got our first taste of what the end of the next year would be like as we ushered for Baccalaureate and Commencement. As we entered on the last journey through the halls of MVHS, (in the year of the Beatles), we were amazed to see many new faces on the faculty. A new subject was added—French. This year Ann-Margret Roh- nisch, our second foreign exchange student, came from Orebro, Sweden. Autumn inevitably brought football, and her royal majesty was a member of the Senior class. For the first time, escorts were elected from the various classes. Dances sponsored by the ! Student Council were held in the cafeteria after the games and were exciting highlights of the year. Like the rest of the nation, we were stunned and bereaved by the untimely death of our President, John F. Kennedy, and our prayers went out to Lyndon B. Johnson as he valiantly faced the challenge of the presidency. We enjoyed another Evansville College play--this time Twelfth Night --and our own homespun musi- cal The Guy From Venus . Basketball season drew to an end, and A Dream Come True” was the elec- tion of a senior girl as queen. Dear Phoebe was our Senior Play and the comedy was a masterpiece, in our eyes at least! We chose our announcements, exchanged senior pictures (a 5 x7 for that special guy). Soon it was time for the prom. The juniors went overboard in making our senior prom a mem- ory we shall never forget! All too soon, the rush of end-of-year activities descended upon us— Senior Distinction Day, the class trip, practices for Baccalaureate and Commencement--all these hit us in rapid-fire succession. Abruptly, I awoke! Today was the day I was to be graduated from high school, and there were many things to accomplish before my big night. The day passed fleetingly, and there we were, in the long j gray line. We walked proudly down the aisles, searching for a familiar face in the sea of beings, and finding, inevitably a pleasant memory. The service was too soon completed; and as we marched up the aisles of MVHS for the last time, we were reminis- cent; but we were determined as we had crossed the river, to let the knowledge and wisdom we had gained in these halls guide us to a bright future. Now, the ocean lay ahead. 93 WHAT WE DID WHEN WE DID IT E. DALE ADAMS Henderson Co. H. S.. Henderson, Ky. 1,2,3. PAMELA ADAMSON Boosters 3,4; FHA 4; Sunshine 3,4. SPENCER ALDRICH FFA 1,2,3,4.
