Remember? It was that wonderful school year 1959-60 IT WAS IN THE FALL OF 1960 WHEN WE: returned to the old school as Sophomores had two noon releases at first--then it was changed to three (and some of us ate three lunches, did you?) elected another maid-of-honor for football attended a seasonal party, Winter Wonderland moved into the brand-spankin’ new school on M-Day, Dec. 5 !!! excited by its magnitude enthralled by its beauty and efficiency saddened by the thought of leaving an old friend and memories of her that we will cherish forever saw the New Year arrive-- Then it was 1961 and we: presented a Donkey Basketball game (didn't we pack ’em in?) substituted a Valentine Tea Party for an afternoon of school were invited to another all-school party, April Showers stuffed ourselves at the Student Council's first Smorgasboard recognized the arrival of the General Electric Company. Remember? It was that wonderful school year 1960-61. Suddenly it dawned on us that we were half way through.. .little did we know that the last two years would pass even faster than the first two. 16 THEN, WE WERE JUNIORS, AND WE: opened the doors of our school to Kiyoshi Sawamura, a foreign exchange student from Japan saw history in the making via television when Colonel John Glenn orbited the earth sported our new class jackets down MVHS halls (wasn't everyone green with envy?) witnessed the comeback of the Mt. Vernon High News grumbled and mumbled about the new Progress Report Cards peddled magazines and pushed our sales up-up-UP to a record breaking total of $4362. 28 gobbled turkey as our reward at our Victory Banquet celebrated the first birthday of our new school received our gorgeous class rings ! finally ! cruised down the river aboard the Chaperon for our first Prom (It was almost sub-zero weather and most of us felt like sardines. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it.) participated in two new sports, wrestling and cross-country (we were quite good at them, too !). Remember? It was that wonderful school year 1961-62. IT WAS THE FOURTH AND FINAL YEAR WHEN WE: returned as 119 Seniors to conclude our high school career elected a football queen watched the birdie as our pictures were snapped rooted at ball games as the Booster Club was organized once again added to the Christmas spirit as well as to our treasury by our record- breaking Christmas card sales were subject to a few more bomb scares shivered in the coldest winter of ten years and missed two days of school because of snow were measured for our caps and gowns elected a basketball queen awaited the arrival of Babcock and Wilcox Company performed in the Senior Play danced and romanced at the Prom--an experiment of the first open prom bought and sent Senior announcements journeyed on the traditional Senior Trip played hookey for a whole week attended our Baccalaureate ceremony marched in the long gray line on the date of Commencement--May 24, 1963. Remember? It was our Senior year 1962-63. We did all these things--and more. We are like other high school students, yet we are different. Another year, another Junior class and another record breaking magazine sale. A goal of $4, 400 seemed too high for 171 Juniors, but they met the challenge and surpassed it with a sales total of $4,896.70. This not only broke the school re- cord but placed the Class of '64 in first place in sales in a territory covering Southern Indiana and Southern Illinois. Jon Uebelhack, high salesman for the campaign with a total of $409.70 is the third MVHS Junior in the his- tory of the local magazine sale to top the $400 mark. Turkey — 85 pounds of turkey — supplied by Mr. Taylor of Curtis Publishing Co. satisfied the appetite of the class and provided an opportunity for awards and recognition. BASEBALL 1962 The baseball team, under the direction of Coach Gravette, won eight of eleven games for a successful season. Their rugged schedule included four wins from six of the Evansville schools. Power at the plate was one of the most important factors in their success. They out hit their opponents .271 to .183. Batting over .300 for the season were Robert Schroeder .424, Gary Burns .385, James Rainey .323 and John Price .320. The pitching of Carl Wade was another important factor in their fine record. He pitched one no-hitter, one of three during his high school career, and finished the season with six wins and three losses. Gary Burns and Floyd Schoening each pitched a winning game. Lost by graduation were Robert Schroeder, James Raney, John Price, Jim Stewart and Carl Wade. Returning lettermen include Gary Burns, Paul Nix, Robert Ozinga, Don Walker and Gary Porter. Alan Ackman, captain of the first cross-country team in the history of MVHS, has continued his winning ways this year. He holds the honor of being the first runner from MVHS to qualify for the state in Cross Country. During the season Alan won four races, finished second in the Lincoln Trails meet and third in the SIAC. In the sectional, he placed first in 9:52.4. He ran second in the regional and 22nd in the State, as the only runner representing Southwestern Indiana. Alan holds the school record of 2:04.1 in the 880. 60 RUNNERS WIN RECOGNITION The fabulous four year high school track career of Gary Carr came to a close with the state meet last spring. As a member of the relay team in his freshman year, Carr made his first trip to the sectional, regional, and state meets. In the 440 he lost only five races in three years. He was fifth in the state as a Sophomore, and fourth as a Junior and Senior. Gary won the 440 three times in the SIAC, twice in the Pioneer Relays and holds the Linton Relays record. In ad- dition he was a consistent point winner in the dashes and a member of the relay teams in dual and triangular meets. Carr's records are: SIAC 50.5 Linton Relays Athletic Park Regional 49.7 50.8 50.9 CROSS COUNTRY-1962 Highlighting a successful cross country season were three victories in four dual and triangular meets; a fourth place in the Lincoln Trails, a fifth in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference, and a sectional championship won by Alan Ackman. Oscar Fingers, a hold-over letter winner, was second in total points scored during the season and finished tenth in the the Sectional. Other consistant point winners included M. Stewart, J. Tucker, andS. Hannah. Lost by graduation will be A. Ackman, D. Austin, O. Fin- gers, M. Hamblin, and G . Porter. FOOTBALL 1962 Nominated by Don Bernhardt in his Courier column as his choice for the most courageous team in southern Indiana, the undermanned Wildcat squad of twenty-one was deserving of this accolade. Throughout the season there was evidenced a very strong team spirit, a willingness to hustle in practice and to give their best in every ball game. Maintaining these attributes through a ten-game schedule in the face of seven de- feats, the Wildcats scored in all games and managed to keep the pres- sure on their opponents in every contest. Seniors on the team included A.Foster, T.Humston, R.Juncker, R. Lilleston, and G .Seibert. M. V.H.S. Don Walker, a three year veteran and captain of the team, was the leading scorer for the Wildcats. At the end of the season, the squad was composed of three seniors (Walker, Proctor, and Fingers), seven juniors, a sophomore and a freshman. ROW ONE: R. Miles, O. Fingers, G. Coon, D. Walker, J.
