AT MVHS In an effort to improve international understanding,.the Student Council, in co-operation with the American Field Service, sponsored MVHS’s first exchange student. Kiyoshi Sawamura of Tokyo, Japan, who arrived in Mt. Vernon in August 1961 on his 18th birth- day, lived in the home of Dr. and Mrs. L. John Vogel and family. Selected from top caliber students, Kiyoshi has made an excellent academic record at MVHS.He spends much time preparing speeches for civic, church, school, and fraternal organizations. Kiyoshi also enjoys dancing, photography, reading, and ping pong. Many people will benefit from Kiyoshi’s year in Mt. Vernon--his foster family, his class classmates, his church, and his community. By sharing ideas and ideals based on dif- ferent national, religious, cultural, and family backgrounds, an important stride will be made in vaulting the international barriers leading to mistrust and misunderstanding be- tween nations. The pictures on these two pages show Kiyoshi's family, his foster family,- his home, and street scenes from his home city.
