We elected officers and did all of the things a Freshman is supposed to do.. .and added a few ideas of our own. We helped jam the already crowded halls as we moved wearily and confused from one class to another. We surprised everyone, especially the Seniors, with our Knock 'EM Cold float in the Homecoming Parade. This was the year the school returned to eleven-man football.. .and the band had new uniforms. We found time to note the dedication of three new elementary schools.. .and to see the Wildcats win the last Posey Coun- ty tournament. . .they also set a new scoring record of 101 points in a game that year .. .we operated a concession stand to enrich the treasury. Oh yes, we did find out about studying and that thing called FINALS. These were to haunt us and interfere with our education for the remainder of our high school days. As Sophomores we arranged things so that we had time to become active par- ticipants in extra-curricular activities such as a bomb scare and the Hobo Hulla- baloo. We carried on with all of the usual class activities.. .elections, class project (the donkeys again), participated in music and dramatics (Harrison High)--not the one in Evansville. The school became a member of the SIAC and won a Holiday tournament.. .we watch ed with interest as the NEW MVHS began to take form in the com field east of the Athletic Park. Our Junior year.. .we elected officers to carry the responsibility of a busy year. .. we proudly sported class jackets. We eagerly awaited the move to the new build ing. On alert for several weeks we finally made the move and stared in amazement at the sparkling fixtures and fabulous e- quipment. It was a dream come true. Our musically-minded members took a short trip to the Evansville Philharmonic.. .spring sports experienced rain and then more rain... and we watched in awe as the Seniors formed a long grey line. Starting our last high school year we found that we were a little more serious.. .that the days seemed to slip by as fast as Lt. Col. John Glenn's days as he or- bited the earth. We elected two queens.. .and saw the school paper revived.. .the band continued to win numerous honors.. .we were represented in the National Merit Finals.. .the revolutionary progress report cards” made their appearance... and a cast of scantily clad Seniors presented The Boy Who Changed The World. We finally had a prom on the river (at the Juniors' expense).. .and twisted in formal attire ('t wasn't easy) and then, some of us sad, some of us glad, we marched in robes and mortar boards... and suddenly it was all over. It was a big four years, important and de- cisive. Looking back is lots of fun, but now we must look ahead. EAST MEETS WEST AT MVHS In an effort to improve international understanding,.the Student Council, in co-operation with the American Field Service, sponsored MVHS’s first exchange student. Kiyoshi Sawamura of Tokyo, Japan, who arrived in Mt. Vernon in August 1961 on his 18th birth- day, lived in the home of Dr. and Mrs. L. John Vogel and family. Selected from top caliber students, Kiyoshi has made an excellent academic record at MVHS.He spends much time preparing speeches for civic, church, school, and fraternal organizations. Kiyoshi also enjoys dancing, photography, reading, and ping pong. Many people will benefit from Kiyoshi’s year in Mt. Vernon--his foster family, his class classmates, his church, and his community. By sharing ideas and ideals based on dif- ferent national, religious, cultural, and family backgrounds, an important stride will be made in vaulting the international barriers leading to mistrust and misunderstanding be- tween nations. The pictures on these two pages show Kiyoshi's family, his foster family,- his home, and street scenes from his home city. ROW ONE: S. Dempsey, S. Barfield, S. Utley, L. Stallman, L. Duley, B. High light of the prom, which was held in the National Guard Armory, was the crowning of Lana Schreiber by Carl Dick, Junior class president. SENIOR QUEENS The cool brisk evening of September 15, 1961 provided the perfect setting for the Senior's first queen, Martha Schaffstein, who was crowned by Rodney Broomfield. Debby Feldbusch served Her Majesty as Maid of Honor, and Francene Jensen and Bonnie Bryant completed the court of honor. Little Joan David was the crown bearer and David White served as football carrier. The Autumn Leaves setting was arranged by the Girls Athletic Association. 36 REIGN SUPREME In an Oriental setting with Japanese lan- terns and pagoda, Marsha Miller, a pe- tite senior girl, was crowned basketball queen by honorary captain Bob Juncker. Her bouquet of roses was presented by Kiyoshi Sawamura, our exchange student from Tokyo. Attendants were: Maid of Honor, Olena Claxton, Freshman; Susan Anderson, Sophomore; and Janet Stewart, Junior. Katy Lou Keck carried the crown of white carnations and Michael Dunigan served as basketball carrier. 37 Amid a setting of beauty and simplicity, with a background of appropriate music, the Yuletide program in the form of a religious tableaux was presented by the Footlight Performers. Our Marching Wildcats, under the direction of Mr. K. V. Bryant, placed tenth in the Indiana State Fair marching contest. The band has been in the top ten in this contest for two consecutive years. The half-time shows lend in- terest to the football games, and the Varsity Band, com- posed of a few select members, peps up the fans at all home basketball games. The senior officers who work so diligently are: Diann Hansler, Pres- ident; Melvin Simmons, Vice-Pres- ident; Ann Curtis, Secretary; Barbara Reinitz, Treasurer. BEHIND THE SCENE TAX EXEMPT INCOME The sophomores are on top. The Seniors sold, the Juniors sold - they all sold. The Senior class worked hard to make a nice profit in the Christmas cards and stationery; the Juniors really pushed the magazines; the Sophomores rode the donkeys again, pulling in a nice credit; and the Freshmen brushed through to success with their toothbrushes. JUNIORS TALK TURKEY! The Class of '63 went wild on their magazine sales, gobbling up all previous records. Their total sales amounted to $4,362.28, compared to the prior record of $3,300 set by the class of '61. The high salesman, Kathryn Culley, had a total sales record of $322.62, and three other Juniors, Judy Lang, Jackie Jo Andersen, and Jamia Bottomly, were close behind. As an extra prize, the publishing company and the class spon- sored a Turkey Banquet , and as you can see, it was also quite a success. Almost everyone did his share plus a little more to make this year's campaign extra- ordinarily successful. Sponsored by the GAA and including volunteers from both the boys' and girls' Physical Education classes, a Gym Show was present for the students and public in March. The show included gymnastic stunts, rhythms, and a routine involving a ballet choreography developed by the Rhythmettes An added attraction was the appearance of the Rec- Ettes, a group of precision twirlers sponsored by the Evansville Press. STARS! MVHS was presented with one of the finest tele- scopes in this section of the country by Dr. Wm. B. Challman. Being impressed by the new build- ing and facilities, Dr. Challman presented the refracting telescope in order that the students may study the expanding science of the universe. Thirty-three top scholars were honored in the first General Electric Posey County Scholarship Day on May 11, 1961. The event included a tour of the new polycarbonate plant, a buffet, and an address by Dr. W. D. Snively, Jr., executive vice-president of Mead Johnson and Company, encouraging scholarship and challenging ability. Stu- dents from the present Senior Class who attended are Gary Bayer, Dee Ann Benner, Kathleen Kleinschmidt, Stanley Vogel, and Charles Watson. MVHS FADS Circle pins???? Hey, everybody, let's TWIST! They were victorious in the Pioneer Relays and fifth in the Petersburg Relays. In the SIAC meet Mt. Vernon took eighth place, and finished seventh in the sectional. In addition the Wildcat cindermen rolled to three victories in four other meets. Top scorer for the Wildcats was Gary Carr, compiling a total of 88 1 2 points. In so doing he set a new school mark in the 440 yard dash with a clock- ing of 50.1 seconds. Gary also accounted for Mt. Vernon's two points in the state meet with a fourth place in the 440. Broad jumping, high jumping pole vaulting, and running, tireless Mike Stewart accumulated 73 3 4 points. Rounding out a brilliant high school career, Mike jumped his way to a fourth place tie in the sectional high jump and a berth on the regional squad. It was Mike's fourth year as a track letterman. BASEBALL—1961 The 1961 Wildcat baseball team had a season of ups and downs; however, the score was even at season's end with a record of five wins and five losses. The Wildcat's S.I.A.C. record was two victories and three defeats. Hopes of winning the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference championship were high as Coach Gravette's Mt. Vernon Wildcats won four of its first five games. But then a streak of bad luck saw the Wildcats drop four games in a row. They rebounded for a victory in their final game with a win over Princeton. Two highlights of the season were the no-hit pitching efforts turned in by Dale Smith in the opener against Rex Mundi and by Carl Wade against North Posey. The two hurlers posted season records of 3-2 and 2-3 respectively. The leading hitters were James Rainey (.319), Jerry David (.3111), and John Price (.302). Seniors, all of whom saw regular action, were N. Curtis, J. David, D. Smith, and M. Stewart. Vernon’s cross country team, successfully inaugurating another sport, brings to six our list of interscholastic competitions. Gary Carr won individual first place honors in our initial meet, and second place in the next meet. Alan Ackman, the team captain, kept up the two-mile pace and was Mt. Vernon's first runner for the rest of the season, with the exception of the New Harmony - North Posey meet when Oscar Fingers broke through the pack to lead for Mt. Vernon. This was Mt. Vernon's lone team victory. The cross country team had five major lettermen in its initial year: Alan Ackman, Gary Carr, Oscar Fingers, John Tucker, and David Jones. Steve Lowery and Gary Porter received reserve letters; Paul Rohlman and Mike Jones were awarded activity certificates. Three seniors will be lost by graduation this year: Gary Carr, David Jones, and Carl Wade. The schedule included the following meets: Washington, Washington Catholic, Vincennes, Mt. FOOTBALL—1961 In a year of rebuilding, the Wildcat football team posted a record of four wins and six losses. The SIAC record was one and five. Coach David's Wildcats got off to a good start in marching to victory in its first two games. The team went winless in its next four outings, but it bounced back to win two of the final four games. Lack of depth and experience proved a handicap to the Wildcats, but the boys made up for this in determination and spirit. Seniors on the squad include: R. Broomfield, L. Bryant, M. Curtis, C. Dick, G. Fischer, H. Logan, L. Orth, J. Price, R. Schroeder, L. Wagner. Two of them, Bryant and Price, received recognition by being selected for the All Conference team in the B division. BASKETBALL 1961-62 According to Coach Solomon, our two-letterman team was simply too small, young, and inexperienced. With only two six-footers and three veteran seniors, the Wildcats did manage to win two games. John Price and Don Walker were the high scorers, aver- aging 18 and 13 points a game, respectively. A high point and beneficial result of the season was the rapid development of the sophomore players. Coach Solomon worked diligently with these boys in order to have a few fairly experienced players for next year. Things WILL get better. The three Seniors lost to graduation are D. Jones, J. Coach Weinzapfel's matmen were victorious over Bosse, Mater Dei, and Rex Mundi (twice). The reserve squad compiled a record of three wins and three losses. The climax of the season was Rodney Broomfield's success in the state tourney. He placed first in his weight division in the regional meet and captured fourth in the state finals. Through his hard work and efforts, Rodney has brought honor to himself and Mt. Vernon High School. Seniors lost to graduation are R. Broomfield, W. Menikheim, and L. Orth. SEASON'S RECORD MVHS OPP. Vernon High School Student Council, under the sponsorship of Miss Redman and headed by president Arthur Ellisor, engaged in a variety of activities. Heading the list was the bringing of an exchange student, Kiy- oshi Sawamura, to MVHS. The Coun- cil fed the public at their smorgas- board to raise additional money for the student exchange fund. Two audi- torium programs were also under- taken by the Council. The one-year anniversary party for the occupation of the new school featured a recol- lection of important events as well as student experiences. The style show exhibited proper apparel for forthcoming spring events. The Coun- cil's annual all-school party had the theme of Gypsy Jamboree. The student body has every right to be proud of its hard-working Student Council. 81 Smorgasbord Foods Committee Chairman, Paula Hanshoe, confers with Miss Lucille Redman, Stu- dent Council sponsor, and Mrs. Florence Krieten- stein, M.V.
