THE CLASS OF 1961 The class of 1961—they made history. My father says so. He graduated in 1961, so he ought to know. He’s always talking about 'good ole days', and I have to listen. Mom says so. She says Dad's right—the Class of 1961 was great. Mom was in Dad's class of '61. I know a lot about that great class, so I'll tell you a little about it. In 1957, when they were freshmen, that ancient building on Sixth and Canal Streets was the high school. Dad says it's Tudor-Gothic architecture, so it must really be old. Freshman year is always a turmoil, but that Class of 1961 was thoroughly baffled by some sort of a diagonal system . Dad tried to explain it to me but I just don't understand. I think it still confuses Dad. Dad says he doesn't understand what upheld the MVHS floors under those busybody freshmen. They never tired. The very first football sea- son they pushed their candidate right up to maid-of-honor title. And you should have seen them peddling the refreshments at the basketball games! The customers didn't get a chance to say No . They outshone the upperclassmen by the reign of a freshman king and queen at the first all school party. Dressed up in Sunday manners, they attended the Valentine Tea arranged by the Girls' Council. The final event of the 1957-1958 year was a Hawaiian All-School Party . Dad talks about everything but studying that year. He always remembers something else when I mention report cards. As sophomores, they kicked off a second football season with a maid-of-honor. That silly business was too silly for them. The donkey basketball game was very serious business (although even the sophs rolled in laughter) because it was their big money-making pro- ject. The gym was packed and the coins rolled in. The revolutionary jackets (honest, they were—even striped collars!) arrived on September 8, 1959. Upperclassmen laughed with envy as the juniors wore them to every class. By the way, Dad still drags that motheaten thing out of the attic every once in a while. He and Mom admire it while I try to hide my giggles.
