THE MOUNT VERNON METROPOLITAN SCHOOL BUILDING CORPORATION Providing a distinct public service to their community, the members of the Holding Corporation have been the agency through which the new MVHS has been financed and erected. Serving without compensation, they have given freely the many hours needed for purchasing the site, issuing and selling the bonds, awarding the contracts, and inspecting the construction of the building. The Metropolitan School District will pay an annual rental to the Holding Corporation who will, in turn, apply this money toward the retirement of the bonds. When all bonds have been paid, the title for the building will be transferred to the Metropolitan School District, and the Holding Corporation will be dissolved. 4 PROGRESS REPORT December 19, 1959 Dedication of Mt. He’s always talking about 'good ole days', and I have to listen. Mom says so. She says Dad's right—the Class of 1961 was great. Mom was in Dad's class of '61. I know a lot about that great class, so I'll tell you a little about it. In 1957, when they were freshmen, that ancient building on Sixth and Canal Streets was the high school. Dad says it's Tudor-Gothic architecture, so it must really be old. Freshman year is always a turmoil, but that Class of 1961 was thoroughly baffled by some sort of a diagonal system . Dad tried to explain it to me but I just don't understand. I think it still confuses Dad. Dad says he doesn't understand what upheld the MVHS floors under those busybody freshmen. They never tired. The very first football sea- son they pushed their candidate right up to maid-of-honor title. And you should have seen them peddling the refreshments at the basketball games! The customers didn't get a chance to say No . They outshone the upperclassmen by the reign of a freshman king and queen at the first all school party. Dressed up in Sunday manners, they attended the Valentine Tea arranged by the Girls' Council. The final event of the 1957-1958 year was a Hawaiian All-School Party . Dad talks about everything but studying that year. He always remembers something else when I mention report cards. As sophomores, they kicked off a second football season with a maid-of-honor. That silly business was too silly for them. The donkey basketball game was very serious business (although even the sophs rolled in laughter) because it was their big money-making pro- ject. The gym was packed and the coins rolled in. The revolutionary jackets (honest, they were—even striped collars!) arrived on September 8, 1959. Upperclassmen laughed with envy as the juniors wore them to every class. By the way, Dad still drags that motheaten thing out of the attic every once in a while. He and Mom admire it while I try to hide my giggles. 4 ✓ 1 ■v THEY MADE HISTORY. they had everyone in the whole area buying years' subscriptions, — and the results? They topped all previous sales! The juniors, especially the girls, really liked the Hobo Party that year. Since no ties and coats were necessary, they had no trouble making the guys take them. The 'King of the Hoboes' was a junior, naturally. By this time, they were pretty spoiled--having already had two maids-of-honor. 1959-60 basketball season was no exception, and the junior queen candidate was elected their third maid-of-honor. Spring brings April; April brings love. And that's not all it brought the spring of '60. Class rings arrived on April 27. Mom says the girls used real strategy to win the guys' rings. But she got Dad's, finally. There are other memories for that April 27. It was also the date of their very first prom. Their trip Around the World in Eighty Days was really only a four hour excursion down the Ohio on the Streamer Avalon. Even Dad says they had a wonderful time, and he hates to go dancing. He doesn't say so, but Mom knows it. The senior year was launched into orbit on the very first day, and the officers elected the previous spring were all ready to begin duties. The football queen was the first of the Class of '61. On November 29, 1960, the MVHS team met that of North in the new gym. The students were sad as the Wildcats were defeated, but shone with pride of their team and their beautiful new hardwood. The seniors were honored again by the first queen in the new gym. The Christmas card sale was a little disappointing. Dad seldom mentions it, but I know they didn't quite reach the goal. December 5, 1960 was a drizzly, cool day. But the spirits of the MVHS students were as sunny as July—they were moving at last! A march from the old building to the new on Harriet Street was a his- torical event, the official occupation of the new MVHS. Dad says senior activities kept him 90 busy, he didn't realize how near graduation was. Suddenly, they were presenting Ask Any Girl as the senior play. Then their last prom was only a memory. And Baccalaureate was soon past. Senior week, the final week of class fun, was there and, it, too, was suddenly gone. Dad says he'll never forget commencement. He says, although he wouldn't admit it then, that he had a lonely, empty feeling as he walked up to receive his diploma. Mom and the girls all had tear streaked faces. I don't see why they'd cry on a happy day like that, but Mom says I'll understand someday. The Superintendent and Board have met in numerous and long sessions. THE HAPPY REFLECTIONS OF A WELL SPENT LIFE. Twenty-five years of service and devotion to Mt. Vernon High School are included in Mr. Warren Kishline's happy re- flections of a well spent life. His retirement from custodial duties, begun in 1935, leaves memories of his devotion and loyalty, not only as a custodian, but also as an advisor from his hallway bench, as a morale booster when a boost was sorely needed, as a patient tolerator of pranks by generations of students, and as a friend to all. His kindness has left its mark on our hearts and lives. It is our wish that the years ahead will continue to bring to our friend, Mr. Kishline, the happiness he so richly deserves. A gift of lasting and sentimental value, sketches of early south Posey County Schools, was presented to Mt. Vernon High School by Mrs. Anne Doane, well known Posey County artist. Devoting more than two years of her time and talent, Mrs. Doane has made sketches of the former schools in the area. These pictures, representing the history of school progress in Posey County, are to be a permanent col- lection housed in the library of the high school. Shown in the photo below is her sketch of the The Old Castle (1896-1929). MT. ATHLETICS 19 FOOTBALL 60 Starting the 1960 gridiron wars with a win over Boonville the Wildcats went on to compile a very credible 6-4 record for the season, their best in the three years since dropping 8 man football. Lack of depth again proved a handicap in some of the tougher games on the schedule, notably those with North and Princeton. In each of these encounters the Cats played excellent ball during the first half, only to fall before superior numbers. A pair of MVHS senior gridders received recognition as second team Division ”B” SIAC selections. Fullback Mike Stewart and Gary Bryant, named as a tackle, were given this accolade as a result of tabulations of nominations from every coach in the Division. Missing next fall will be the following seniors; Adams, Allyn, Ashworth, Baldwin, Barnes, Bryant, Cox, Curtis, Givens, Miller, Roos, Scherretz, Stewart, Wade, and York. ROW ONE: Managers: D. In spite of the lack if size they finished the season with a 10-10 record and six of the nine losses were by a total of fourteen points. Playing host to the Holiday Tournament they finished as runner-up to Ft. Branch, re- versing the previous year's finish. Highlights of the season were the games with Tell City, Lincoln, Central, Princeton and Dale. Lost by graduation will be Ashworth, Curtis, Kemper, Smith, Stewart, and Wade.
