Each year on Class Day, the graduating class adds its colors to the hoop-pole. This rough, wooden hoop is a tradition in our school as well as a symbol of the past. The hoop-pole was original ly used to hold barrels together. The cooperage industry was an important one in early Mt. Vernon. From the stories and legends associated with the hoop-pole fights between migrant river men and local settlers comes this tradi- tional symbol of our school, and the name of our yearbook. . . . THE HOOP-POLE!

1929 MVHS 1960 The high school building in which we have attended school for the past four years was completed in 1929 at a cost of $200,000. The building is located on a site purchased in 1920. The dedication of this Tudor-gothic style building was held on Feb. 22, 1929, although classes had been held in it since the beginning of the second semester. The speaker for the occasion was Dr. H. Noble Sherwood, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction, who was introduced by Supt. M. N. O'Bannon. The high school principal was Earl Nash and the school board was composed of Alfred Gronemier, Ambrose Harbert and Wm. Espenchied, Sr. The move into this building brought about many changes. The plan of organization placed the seventh and eighth grade, along with the four high school classes, in the same building. The home room system was inaugurated and for the first time the high school had its own auditorium and gymnasium. The Footlight Performers, under the direction of Miss Howard, dedicated the new auditorium by presenting three one-act plays. This organization financed the purchase of the curtains for the stage and drapes for the windows. The eighth annual Posey county basketball tournament was the first major event to be staged in the new gymnasium; Poseyville eliminated Mt. Vernon, coached by Mr. Pence, and was in turn defeated in the finals by Griffin 24-22.
