Betty Keitel The Forty-Second Edition Presenting, in this 42nd edi- tion of The Hoop-Pole, a brief look backwardābygone days; a longer look at the presentāour days; and a glimpse of the blue- prints for the future ātheir days. The Spirit of MVHS is an intan- gible something which we recognize as an inheritance from all of the schools that have proudly borne the name of Mt. Vernon High School. May the students of each generation cherish and enrich it. To the Spirit of MVHSāpast, present, and futureāwe dedicate this Hoop-Pole. This rough, wooden hoop is a tradition in our school as well as a symbol of the past. The hoop-pole was original ly used to hold barrels together. The cooperage industry was an important one in early Mt. Vernon. From the stories and legends associated with the hoop-pole fights between migrant river men and local settlers comes this tradi- tional symbol of our school, and the name of our yearbook. . . . THE HOOP-POLE! MVHS began in Old Central 1870-1887 āMoved to Main Street 1887-1896 āThen to The Old Castle 1896-1929 1929 MVHS 1960 The high school building in which we have attended school for the past four years was completed in 1929 at a cost of $200,000. The building is located on a site purchased in 1920. The dedication of this Tudor-gothic style building was held on Feb. 22, 1929, although classes had been held in it since the beginning of the second semester. The speaker for the occasion was Dr. H. Noble Sherwood, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction, who was introduced by Supt. M. N. O'Bannon. The high school principal was Earl Nash and the school board was composed of Alfred Gronemier, Ambrose Harbert and Wm. Espenchied, Sr. The move into this building brought about many changes. The plan of organization placed the seventh and eighth grade, along with the four high school classes, in the same building. The home room system was inaugurated and for the first time the high school had its own auditorium and gymnasium. The Footlight Performers, under the direction of Miss Howard, dedicated the new auditorium by presenting three one-act plays. This organization financed the purchase of the curtains for the stage and drapes for the windows. The eighth annual Posey county basketball tournament was the first major event to be staged in the new gymnasium; Poseyville eliminated Mt. Vernon, coached by Mr. Pence, and was in turn defeated in the finals by Griffin 24-22. The Elk's batting trophy, awarded on a basis of an average of two and one- half appearances at the plate per game, went to Sammy Gander who had an average of . 400. The pitchers for the season were Charles Brauser, Mike Stewart, Dale Smith and Carl Wade. Coach Gravette has the following lettermen returning for the 1960 season: Frank Adams, Neil Curtis, Charles Naab, John Price, and Mike Stewart. The time must have been good!!! In the regional meet we were close behind New Albany's winning 20 1 6 points with 18 1 2. Jess Wright was the work horse of the track team, running the dashes, broad jumping, and running a leg on the 880 relay team. His point total for the season was a record breaking 171 1 6 followed by J. Deckard with 81 and M. Stewart with 65. Wright broke one of the oldest school and track records when he did the 100 in 10. 1. In addition, he established a new school record in the 220 when he ran it in the sectional in 22.5. The same evening he established a school and sectional record of 22-2 3 4 in the broad jump. The 880 relay team broke the school record by copping the sectional race in 1:33.7. Members were G. Playing their first year in the SIAC (B division) they won two and lost one. With the resignation of Mr. Byrd the task of fashioning a team became the responsibility of Coach David, who had handled the Freshmen in 1958. Asst. Coach Weinzapfel tutored the linemen and the Freshmen were directed by Asst. Coach Scates. Steady improvement in fundamental football and team play were notice- able throughout the season. The '59 squad demonstrated a strong team spirit as they battled their way through a schedule that included some of the better teams in the area. Seven seniors, including F. Adams, J. Andersen, F. Haas, S. Joyner, J. Kirkpatrick, C. Naab and J. Robb, will be lost by graduation, but a total of 14 freshmen were squad members at the end of the season. 71 Manager S. Vogel, Coach Solomon. The high point and major upset engineered by the Cats was their victory over the favored Ft. Branch Twigs in the Holiday Tournament. Only four home games were played this year, the last for the present gym, as construction moved forward on the MVHS. Graduating seniors include Naab, Keitel, Schroeder, Juncker and Simpson.
