THE HOOP-POLE 1953 Thirty-Fifth Edition 5 = n- r i -’r? Si §1 M -4 p “ lar -W r- “ Editor Dinah Patmore Business Manager Jerry McClarney Portraits By Doane Studio Published by The Senior Class Mt. Vernon High School Mt. Vernon, Indiana MT. VERNON HIGH SCHOOL Dear Folks, Those strange sounds you hear coming from Room 34 are only the sighs and exclamations of relief from the staff of the 1953 annual. The poor dears are so relieved that it is fin- ished, that we can't hold them re- sponsible for all of their actions! But honestly, we think we have something to shout about. We think we have given you a pretty good pic- ture of a year in M. V. H. S. We wanted to make our annual an album that anyone who knew M. V. H. S. in 1952-53 would like to look at now and in the years to come. We know you will get many a chuckle out of the pictures and activities recorded be- tween these covers. The division pages, the work of Georgia Eckels, should serve to re- mind you of many of the events as- sociated with each section of the book. So we graduate, leaving this annu- al as the record of our most memor- able year. Mt. Vernon, Indiana THE SENIOR CLASS 3 5 TO Mrs. Katherine Abel Mrs. Wilma Jacobs IN APPRECIATION During our years in high school we have often observed the many things that you do to keep the school moving as smoothly. We have the feeling that we have, on numerous occasions been the cause of many of your headaches. In case you have forgotten there have been such mat- ters as transfers, changed addresses, lost books, misplaced report cards, late bulletin notices and later busses. Because you have been patient, friendly and help- ful, we wish, with a sense of appreciation, to dedi- cate the 1953 Hoop-Pole to you. The Hoop-Pole Staff HEDGES CENTRAL DEDICATION S. The dedication address was given by Judge William H. Steckler of the United States District Court, an alumnus of Mt. Vernon High School, Class of 1932. Completed in 1952 the new Hedges Central school provides adequate housing for the grade school pupils and serves as a lasting memorial to Mr. Hed- ges, the School Board and the School Building Corporation. BIG MOMENTS One of the main events at the beginning of the new school year was the Football Coronation with attractive Susan Carman as the queen. Shirley Morlock, Bettye Hedges, Myrna Waller, Juanita Booth, Marlene Adams and Wanda Pfeiffer serv- ed as her attendants and Gayle Farris was Maid of Honor. Joe Higgenbottom had the honor of crowning the 1952 queen and Johnny Bob Walling and Toni Tomlison were crown and ball bearers. The parade of floats was won by Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority which was also an event of September 19, 1952. ROYALTY MORE ROYALTY On the night of December 12, pretty Martha Cowan was crowned queen of the 1952-53 basketball season by acting captain Bill Bourne. Her attendants were Shirley Bishop, Carla Potter, Della Temple and Barbara Smith. The crown and basketball bearers were Merle Potter and Suzanne Mabry. Moonlight and Roses made a perfect theme and setting for our Junior-Senior Prom on April 25, 1952. Chosen by the vote of the Junior class, Joan Lawrence was crowned Queen of the Prom by George Hurley. Music for the dance was furnished by Roger Pemberton and his band. NATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK We had Miss Jones of Evansville College as our guest speaker, with Shirley Morlock pre- siding. H v 3 THE AMERICAN WAY ( m' i O o Sponsored by the Social Studies Club, major party headquarters under Betty John- son and Raymond Stratton, were established. Campaign literature was distributed, debates were held and a mock election was carried on. Regular election procedures, including registration, voting by precincts and tabulating the returns provided an in- teresting insight into The American Way. These musicians, shown in one of their formations, have had a big year. The band paraded at the football games, played at the Posey County Choral Festival and in the Band Festival. This year finds the Music Department moved into a home of their own —One of the barracks buildings. MORE MUSIC M.V.H.S. singers were a part of the chorus that filled the Griffin gym at the County Choral Festival, October 16. Mr. Brad Chaffin of Evansville, Indiana was the guest conductor. Christmas finds the choral group caroling throughout the halls. Try-outs and rehearsals for the triple - trio and sextette are di- rected by Robert Padgett. THE SALES CAMPAIGNS The Christmas card and stationery sales, under the di- rection of Mrs. Shelby, should provide the post office with a busy time. The total sales amounted to $860.25, topping our goal by $260. Mr. Taylor of the Curtis PublishingCom- pany gives the magazine sales instruc- tions and the Juniors look for bargains. Goal-----$2,500 Total Sales....$3,244.50 ANOTHER RECORD! MORE FUN The Christmas Tea - Dance brought out the high lights of the season with its gay decorations fea- turing The Littlest Angel. The boys apparently enjoyed the food. Wagon wheels, lanterns, bales of hay, saddles, bridles, transformed the gym into a littered stable at our fall all school party, The Leap Year Barn Dance. We have finally reached our goal with the help of our faculty and our fellow students. On September 5, the seniors entered M.V.H.S. to start the last lap of their educational (?) journey. Sophisticated?? Well, some people doubted it. At our first class meeting we elected officers and football queen candidates. This marked the beginning of our Senior year. We were well represented on the football team with eleven Senior members. Time was slipping by rapidly, so quickly but care- fully we chose the annual staff. After much hair pull- ing and nail biting the year book got underway and every one concerned heaved a sigh of relief. By that time we had received our first six week’s grades. The favorite excuse was I just haven't got over my vaca- tion. ” Hurrah for us!! We went way over our goal in the card and stationery sale. We really fooled everybody (including ourselves.) They say that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy so we had our play with the big Leap Year Barn Dance. This was the girls' big night--and did they take advantage of it!!! And by the way, what did you think of certain re- fined (?) senior boys who provided us with the delight- ful (?) odor throughout the halls? Surprise!! The Posey County Tourney wasn’t held in Posey County. It was held in the Mater Dei gym in Evansville to accommodate more people. And who won it? The Wildcats, of course, and wasn't it a thrill to see them cut down the nets and receive the trophy for the second year in a row? Men Are Like Streetcars so the saying goes, and everyone found out why the night of the Senior Play. The Seniors really sat back and enjoyed the Prom this year--especially since we didn't have to do any of the work. It was really a swell Prom, Juniors. Ooooh!!! My stomach was the most heard ex- pression the day after the Senior picnic. (The drug stores, also, had a busy day selling Pepto Bismal.) What??? Honor Day already! And of course, the Seniors took all the honors. Well, almost all, anyway. Baccalaurate and Commencement!!! These were the most important events of our Senior year and really, we acted like ladies and gentlemen. Two down and two to go was our motto at the beginning of our Junior year. We had at last reached the exalted ranks of upperclassmen and were now call- ed Jolly Juniors. However, some people thought we were still a bit Silly because we wore our new sweat- ers and jackets during the hot autumn days. We elected officers and chose two of the class beauties for football queen candidates. This year the football queen and her royal court were privileged to reign over a team who tied for P.A.C. Championship. Shoe leather and knuckles were slowly wasted a- way during the annual Junior magazine sales. Compe- tition ran high throughout the two weeks because everyone was enthused over winning those prizes. (We also needed the money to put over the big prom we were planning.) 31 OUR MEMORABLE DAYS it fun to see those dignified Seniors get dumped? There were five sophomores on the staff of the Hoop- Pole Jr. this year. Could this be the reason there has never been a weekly Hoop-Pole since????? Hoorah!!! We didn't have to go the full nine months because of the ice and snow. And speaking of ice and snow, doesn’t that bring back memories of certain school bus strikes? We really made good use of the library floor at our Sophomore Party. We made even better use of the Home Economics room where we ate hot dogs and drank pop . What is all that commotion you hear? Why it's just the 120 green freshmen moving into Room 30. The first thing we were instructed to do was to e- lect class officers and selecta football queen candidate. Whadda you know??? She was elected Maid of Honor (by the way that’s the closest we ever go.) Oh yes, the freshmen girls and boy were privileged to initiate our brand new Home Economics teacher who was also a Freshman sponsor. Weselected asour class colors, blue and gold. These colors must have been an inspiration (why we'11 never know) to our freshmen basketball team because they came through the season undefeated. This included winning the Freshman PAC tourney. Our first attempt at making money was sponsoring the concession stand at the basketball games. For ob- vious reasons this project didn't last very long. Oh, well, who wanted to work anyway? And then we all experienced the pain of final ex- ams. They weren't too bad after the first shocking moments. These have been our four years of high school; packed full of fun, excitement, and work. So, at the end of the Senior year, We have come to the Cross- roads, let us choose the right way. Then there was the Fall Festival All School Party with square dancing exhibitions, pie eating, and pig calling contests. Some of our boys must have really liked the pies. (They sure had enough of it on them.) This year when basketball season rolled around we had some real gone guys . We took the County tour- ney and even went to the finals in the Sectionals at Evansville. (Too bad we couldn't have taken them too.) Say! Weren't we proud the day our class rings came? However, some of the boys didn't keep theirs very long. (Can you guess why???) April 25, was the date encircled on our calendar that year. (You guessed it, the Prom!) We worked hard and spent many hours preparing it; but that night with Moonlight and Roses and soft music, we forgot about work. (That wasn't the only thing we forgot, was it. Seniors?) Everyone met their downfall the night of the Junior Skating Party.. Pillows were the favorite articles the next day. We had reached the end of our Junior year and what awaited us? Exams!!! As usual! What a day to end a perfectly good year...... We arrived in '50 with at least one consolation. We were upper underclassmen. They called us the silly sophomores but we were only acting natural. Alas and alack, we were now separated but only into homerooms. We got original in our Sophomore year and decided not to sell the usual Christmas wreaths. Instead we went clanking around town with some gadgets which we heard a certain sponsor say he hasn't found a use for yet. Have you ever had a ghostly nightmare”? The whole school had one this year and we all had a good time except when we were shaking with fear. We were really dragging in the money this year for we also sponsored the Donkey Basketball game. The defeat seemed to dampen the team's spirit and they lost the last two, making a total of six wins and three losses to finish in a tie with Petersburg for third place in the P. A. C. Joe Higginbottom was selected as center on the All-Conference team and Bob Wade as halfback on the second team. George Hurley, Jesse Walker, Don Hartman and Bill Bourne received honorable mention. Don Hartman did an excellent job on extra points by converting 19 out of 33 for a total of 38 points. Joe Higgenbottom was elected by the team as captain. The team was taken to Bloomington to see an Indiana University football game and were entertained by the American Legion at a banquet. Public support and interest reached the point where it was necessary to reserve all seats on a season ticket basis. The loyal fans were rewarded with the best season's record in the history of M. V. H. S. -- 16 wins against 5 losses. Probably the outstanding games in the win column during the regular season were those over Dale, Oakland City and Cannelton. Mount Ver- non finished fourth in the P. A. C. with Tell City in first place. The County tournament was played in the spacious Mater Dei gym- nasium to accommodate the crowds. Mt. Vernonwon the title for the sec- ond straight year and the ninth time in the history of the tournament. The team reached one of the high points of the season in their victory over Griffin in the final game. Drawing a tough road in the Evansville Sectional, the Cats turned in a brilliant game when they downed Bosse of Evansville by one point.
