This fall we returned to find the noise, not abated, but rather changed to that of the cement mixers and riveting machines, all these, steps in the construction of a new Central Grade School! t .1 S M «I Year, 19 51. 19 52 Subject Speech Textbooks used with pages covered in sen- TEACIIER’S SEMESTER C PeriodFourth _0 co °° - ' JO h ' Total number enrolled top1' Make report lull and accurate. This page is in recognition of the services rendered by the Girls' Club of MVHS. Each girl is a member of one of the six committees. Miss Lucille Redman serves as club sponsor. In cooperation with the Student Council, the social committee helps plan the all- school parties and social affairs for the girls. Halls and classrooms are gaily festooned by the decorating committee, in keeping with the various holidays throughout the school year. The service committee provides flowers and plants for classrooms and performs deeds of community service. Restrooms are checked and cared for by the members of the hostess committee. Get-well cards are sent to girls who are ill. The program committee plans and present the girls' mass meetings each month. The finance committee (not pictured) conducts homemade candy sales. 7® Occx QUEEN: Wanda Jeffries Sr. MAID OF HONOR: Helen Kleinschmidt Soph. Electing Queens has become a tradition with the Class of '52. In seven consecutive campaigns they have elected their candidate. The Class of 52 proudly presents the football and basketball Queens for this year, Wanda Jeffries and Carole Melton. QUEEN: Carole Melton MAID OF HONOR: Doris Ritzert CROWN BEARER: Susan Cox ATTENDANTS: Mildred Dawson Janice Rinnert Marilyn Blubaum TSeviecv On a bright sunny day (the 24th, in fact) of the month of August, of the year 1948, Mount Vernon High inherited one-hundred and twenty-four of us, the future graduating class of 1952. We had always heard of high school and at last had reached one goal of the many yet to come -- We were here ! We started our freshman year off with a bang. A bang in the head for some of the teachers! We made an ear-splitting uproar, and our beloved home-room thirty sounded more like a beehive than an orderly study hall. Oh yes, another thing -- we were green! I suppose that is only natural but maybe we were more so. We settled down and elected Peggy Bourne, Sue Scheller, Joan Lawrence, and John Challman as the executive body. We also chose Phyllis Krietenstein as our queen candidate and found her elected Maid of Honor. How delighted we were that one of us became famous! One thing about the Freshman class that was evident was that we liked to attend parties! We certainly didn't feel out of place at our All-School and class parties that first year. That year, for at least once in our lives we were all peddlers (at the basketball games). We seemed to profit from the gluttonous fans, too. We even had a Freshie basketball team. Speaking of basketball, we must not forget Her Honor, Queen Joan. Did we freshies smile ! Spring, love, and Honor Day all came in leaps and bounds for us. We certainly were proud when our mem- bers carried away some of the coveted honors. That shelf really sounded out. The last day of school saw us as changed personalities; we were now silly- Sophomores. My! Look what's new -- hair cuts, styles, ideas about school life -- well, that was us. We elected as the govern- ing committee, David Keck, Phyllis Krietenstein, Nancy Stevens, and Glenda Todd. We also crowned another queen; this time she was Peggy Bourne, Queen of Football for the year 1949. It be- came evident that we didn't merely select candidates, WE elected queens. We were economical and had two projects to supply our treasurer with sufficient funds. First, we undertook the task of selling Christmas wreaths. We made money; but our customers felt that they had invested not for gain, but rather, for charity. Our class sponsored a donkey basketball game which proved very successful. It was difficult to tell which was having the more fun -- the riders or their steeds. Next day groans such as Oh, my aching back! and Oh, that's my sore arm! could be heard echoing through the corridors. Here was basketball season again and this time still another queen. Her Honor was Glenda Todd. We still liked parties and had fun at both the Fall Round-Up and the Spring Frolic. Then came the day we could order our sweaters. Just think what a privelege it was to have to dig down for some money this time. Shannon's work on the emblem was truly artistic when he turned out a wildcat with green eyes. Next on the agenda was the Prom! Of course, we weren't allowed to go, but we could watch if we did the work. How proud we were when twenty of us were elected to be general flunkies. At last we were the desired and long-waited upperclassmen! By now, electing queens had become our monop- oly. We added two more royal per- sonages to our list. Sue Scheller was Gridiron Queen and Nancy Stevens was crowned Basketball Queen. Our ex- ecutive group included Bob King, Ervin Schroeder, Sue Scheller, and Glenda Todd. Our sweaters came! It's a wonder some of us didn't smother that hot sultry day, but we wouldn't take them off for anything. Magazines! Who said they wouldn't sell? Our goal was $2,000 and we couldn't believe it when we found we had sold over $2,400. We broke the records for magazine sales . All resolved to be Fuller Brush salesmen. We were tested -- not tested on lessons -- but on intellectual and per- sonality adjustments ! Boy, did we 24 Patty-Sty t ta pi ty- Pcvo- get tired, for they lasted all day. Be- tween working problems and telling which block resembled another one, we came out baffled. Were we sur- prised at the results! Glass blower! What a boresome subject. We were all surprised to find that it proved to be a very interesting auditorium program. Weren't we proud of Dennis when he blew that bubble! Recall the county tourney at Griffin? It was wonderful playing in the finals. Then came the sectionals in Evansville. The Reitz Panthers had to admit that we had them scared (but not for long, I'm afraid.) We had two all-school parties our Junior year, The Ghostly Nightmare and The Big Top. We were still having loads of fun. Our class rings came! Weren't they the most beautiful things you had ever seen! We had a problem -- knew not what to do! Finally we solved it and planned an Aquamarine theme for our prom. And on the night of May the fourth, we certainly felt like we were on Luxury Liner-1951. Rippling water, tiny pink shells, rainbow colored fish, beautiful mermaids, and soft music all sent us floating on to dream land. When we, the Junior class, watched the Seniors graduate, we knew that it wouldn't be long before we would be taking that final step. But first would come all those long-awaited activities of the Senior year. Seniors at last! This was an honor we had so long waited. Truthfully, it felt about the same. Sophisticated! ----well, maybe. Ervin Schroeder now rapped the gavel for our 104 Seniors. This year we had a newly organ- ized Student Council, combining the two separate committees. They're off to a good start and we want them to know we wish them success. We elected another Gridiron queen -- this time Wanda Jeffries. With this queen, we tied the record of the total number of queens from any one class. We heard rumors that we would have a good team this year. These rumors came true. We were overjoyed when we tied for the P.A.C., especially since there were ten Seniors on the football squad. Cards, stationery, napkins, wrap- ping paper, just anything you might want. Again WE topped the records once more. Queen time again and we elected Carole Melton as our Basketball Queen of 1951. With this crowning, all re- cords were broken. Speaking of bas- ketball, well, It's unbelieveable ! We won the county tourney. The firetruck is waiting! Get those boys on that firetruck and let's get moving down Main Street. The atmosphere of our parties this year was original and colorful. We had a Fall Festival and the girls were invited to a tea, (Happy Birthday to You in 1952 !) The Senior Play! After the per- formances the cast was literally ex- hausted! The school party -- what fun! Oh yes, speaking of good times, let's not forget the Prom! It was different having someone do all the work. (It seemed strange -- we'd done all the preparation before.) Senior Week. With all the laurels and praises appropriate, we feasted our eyes upon our accomplishments. Com- mencement! ! (Who was happy?) As we graduate this May, 1952, we will never forget our years (only four) spent at Mount Vernon High School. We will dearly remember the teachers, the classes, the activities, and from our inspiring motto The Door of Knowledge IsLabeled Push we hope that we finish to begin. 25 'pe tival TtliteCc________________ Each year our band and choir joins with the other music departments of the county high schools to provide a musical program. The 1951 Posey County Spring Music Festival, was presented in the Poseyville gymnasium on March 16. All day they rehearsed together to blend the instruments and voices into one harmonious unit. In the evening the public was invited to eniov the result. Baccalaureate Service amencement oM ===_ Mt. Vernon High School fBount Brrnnn. Last autumn, the Juniors emerged from a vigorous selling campaign, minus patience, and any surplus shoe-leather; but with $1885.60 worth of magazines sold. Serving as co-chairman of the drive must have put Dinah Patmore and Joyce Becker in the spirit of selling, because Dinah, voted Miss Saleswoman of 1951, was high with $125 worth sold. Joyce and Carolyn Juncker were second and third, respectively. Gary Groneneier served as publicity chairman. JOYCE BECKER GEORGE HURLEY Vice President President DINAH PATMORE Secretary FIRST ROW: H. The team was off to a roar- ing start winning the first five games before losing to Cannelton. However, they bounced back to win the next three and tie Tell City for the P. A. C. Championship. This was the first time in 14 years of Conference play that the title has been shared by two teams. At the close of the season, the championship trophy was presented at a football banquet sponsored by the American Legion. The Cats led the conference on offense with an average of 40.06 points per game. While Bill Humston led the conference in scoring with 15 touchdowns and 10 place kicks for a total of 110 points, the Wildcats were characterized by their team play and spirit. Bill Whitesides, Dennis Kercher, and Johnny Johnson were selected for the All-Conference team, with Oscar Hahn and Bill Humston placed on the second team. After the first overflow crowd it became necessary to provide reserved seats for the season ticket holders for the first time in MVHS history. The season was off to a slow start as the team lost their first two games before breaking into the win column with a couple of victories. After a loss to New Harmony, the team improved steadily and by tournament time were a solid teamworking unit. The Wildcats copped the much coveted title County Champs” for the first time in four years. In a late season game the boys lost to Ft. Branch who were boasting a 16 game winning streak. This was, along with our home game with New Harmony, one of the best contests of the season. As the last game of the regular season approached we found ourselves leading the P.A.C. But for the second time in a year Cannelton proved to be our Waterloo” and the title went to Rockport. The season was marked by good team play featuring some clever passing, a well balanced attack, and high scoring.
