But in no place so much as in the United States is that term so meaningful. To Americans, Our Town is the homiest, friendliest, kindest and busiest place in the whole world. In Our Town are all the hopes, dreams and final realities of many, many lives. So it is to you, the people of Our Town and to the institutions and homes you have founded that we as Seniors dedicate this annual. 3 ARCHITECT'S DRAWING OF THE NEW GRADE SCHOOL CENTRAL GRADE SCHOOL January 30, 1945 CENTRAL GRADE SCHOOL January 31, 1945 ! 1 1 ! Class History In September of 1947, the 78th and biggest class ever to enter the doors of the second oldest com- missioned high school in Indiana walked up the south steps. The scared and bewildered kids were greeted by a blackboard—printed on it in huge letters was the sign All Freshmen Report to Room 30. Their first problem (but certainly not their last!) was to find Room 30. There four years of studying, griping, worrying, eating, spit balls, and fun would begin. In Room 30 the Class of '51 (how far away it seemed then!) elected Janey Finn president. David Green began a three year term as treasurer. With Miss Redman, Miss Lang, and brand-spanking new Mr. Reibold as sponsors of our class, we elected queen candidates—football, Janet Crawford, and basketball, Jackie Davis. Our Freshman year, like any other, was full of mistakes and sorry consequences. But like all Freshmen, as we worked in the refreshment stand and check room at ball games, and as we attended parties and club meetings, we became more adept and understanding members of M V H S. On Honor Day, we took our share of awards. Janey Finn won the girls' Freshman Scholarship Award, the boys' award going to Jim Bauman. J. D. Smith won the Freshman Athletic Award. The final and biggest event of the year was the big hamburger fry and treasure hunt at the Ath- letic Park. It was the class party of class parties! After a summer of all the things one does in the summer, we came back to the now familiar M V H S—in the fall of '48, it was as comfortable to our Sophomore feet as an old shoe. This year was not always easy (none of them were) but at least we knew where everything was, how to get there, and what to expect from our classes. Kenneth Bartlett presided as Pauline Denning and Jeannie Goffinet were chosen for queen candi- dates. Miss Green, Miss Howard, and Mr. Brown put us through our paces—there were holly wreaths to sell, for Christmas windows, and it took a lot of work to plan an effective selling campaign. Other activities claimed our attention, too. The Jr. Sr. Prom was coming up, and oh, who would be chosen to serve? (Incidentally, we had more fun than the upperclassmen!) Now, there were two down, and two to go. Our 137 member 9-B class had dwindled to 103. Our Junior year marked a real milestone. There was a Prom to plan, magazine sales to organize, and best of all, we were now in the exalted ranks of upperclassmen. Our Sponsors, Miss Barger, Miss Woods, and Mr. Abel, had a hard time with us. In spite of Wanda Tipitt's efforts as president, and our electing Wanda Carmen and Laura Tomlinson as candidates for the queenships, nothing really seemed important except getting the Prom planned, and making it the best one ever! Our magazine sales simply had to break the record, for we certainly didn't want to be handicapped by a lack of funds. We did break the record, as a matter of fact, with a total profit of $566.32. Then the real work began—what should our Prom represent? Finally, we decided to have a Holland Holliday. It was a success, too. Tulips, Dutch maids, and windmills covered the gym. We rested on our hard earned laurels, and thought that the end of work had come. How mistaken can you be? Very shortly, graduation exercises and Honor Day brought home the glorious fact! WE WERE SENIORS! It was a little bit of a shock at first, to realize that we'd so painlessly reached the peak of our high school days! School had not more than started than we began to feel our responsibilities. The usual Senior activities went on. We elected Steve Shallman president, De Ette Walls and Wanda Tippit represented the class in the queen race; and we admitted defeat for the fourth and final time. College interviews, career plans, the year book, the Senior play, all these normal activi- ties took place. It was Business as usual. Under all this gaiety, and normality, there was an underlying current of worry and uncertainty. All the plans we made had a clause of if in them. The boys were faced with the prospect of military service, and the girls in turn were not sure what would happen to them. They could still go to college or to work, but definite plans were diffi- cult. None of us is sure of our future. But whatever may come, we will always remember our years at M V H S. Never will we forget, that even in the face of national crises, and uncertainty for every- one, we had four years of fun, education, and preparation, in the high school that is part of the American rights we share in Our Town. 36 r ■ ’ ' ■ ■ ■ ’ ’ ■ ' ' K ’SO-’Sl In Review September We started back on the 5th, the privileged few this year . . . Seniors . . . and what a struggle it has been. During this month we suffered from a delayed heat wave and the sight of the Juniors trying to look comfortable in their new sweaters. Football was underway (see page 40). We had a three ring circus (a real one, not just the Freshmen) in town for the first time in years and we had half a day off. All the Seniors came back. . . . The Juniors went to work for the Curtis Publish- ing Company and sold so many magazines that an over-sized plaque was presented the class. We held the usual pep session to inspire the 'Cats, and Dr. Greer talked to us in one of our Friday sessions. October Bright blue October weather, and an outstanding group of programs, among them trips to the National Parks with Mr. Abel; a visit to the St. Louis settlement house with Rev. Hilfiker who told us about Ollie. Congressman Denton spoke about the United Nations and the band played a concert. We danced to the music of King's Men (and a girl) at the All-School Party, this time called A Ghostly Nightmare. Foot- ball came to an end with the loss of the conference to Petersburg. November The mad pursuit of dropping an inflated sphere through a ring of iron was going strong but the Footlight Performers found time to present a three act play Good Night Ladies ... we took numerous action pictures of the thing but thanks to the developers (in Evansville) you'll never see them. The Senior girls dressed up in their best bib and tucker and trotted over to Miss Howard's house for the Tri Kappa tea. The Class of '51 sold cards and stationery this month to add $ $ $ to their bank account. Another band concert, November 19, for the public this time, with an assist from the choir. Where were the boys? December Back from Thanksgiving vacation and looking forward to Christmas already . . . shopping to do (what, no more funds?). Couples having the usual pre-Christmas split-ups ... in spite of it all we found time to crown a queen, see the one act play Afterwards, and the girls man- aged another tea, complete with tapers and silver service. Our Christ- mas program was a speech class and Music Department production . . . a lovely thing done against the background of a cathedral window. More vacation coming up. January No Blind tournament . . . and hang the man who says we don't have winters like they used to. Finals come late as a result of missing time during the heavy snow . . . but even more sleep didn't make the teachers lenient. It was April the Twenty-Fifth, As Usual as Mrs. Pence told us a story. The Hallelujah Quartet (it turned out to be a trio) sang for us, and we had a visit from the mobile unit for chest pictures (gosh, that frame's cold!). The Sophs sponsored the annual Donkey basketball game, and we dropped the county tournament to New Harmony—then beat them six days later. 7 Of' y-t oooo I DONKfr ■- BASKETBALL 37 February Mr. James Erwin spoke on The Cost of Freedom, an excellent talk by an alumnus of M V H S. Then came the biggest break we've gotten in years—no school from the 19th to the 26th—but there was still work to be done—bet we go to school half of the summer. Still, it is nice to take time out occasionally. February petered out with very little activity, thanks to the weather. The roads are like the well-known loblollies. March From here on we prophesy!! The band and choir traveled to Posey- ville for the County Music Festival—unless the roads refused to be traveled on. April Senior play matinee—the big performance! Are Senior plays really that hard to put on? At least we don't have a Mr. Wadsworth! Mr. Homes' calendar says we have something called the Howells coming— May The Jr. Sr. Prom—there are rumors of everything from an igloo to a South Sea Island. Minor Honor Day—the Seniors should shine, they've worked at nothing hard enough. Baccalaureate—we promise to be good—the end is getting closer and closer. Examinations—for the rest of you poor fish—not us! Ta Ta. Class Day—we hope there'll be a will; if not, there may be some dispute as to who becomes Bufkin's Mayor and Solitude's Queen! Major Honor Day, and honestly, I didn't know there were that many smart people in the Senior Class. With a large number of returning lettermen and some promising sophomores from last year's fresh- man team, the Wildcats came through a good season with seven wins, one tie, and one loss. The line was the heaviest in recent years, averag- ing 200 pounds. The blocking and running showed considerable improvement this season, but pass defense remained a costly weakness at times. The 1950 season found the 'Cats tied with Tell City for second place in the P. A. C, which was won for the third consecutive timer by Petersburg. All conference selections included Schisler, Mc- Faddin and Keitel on the first team and Bartlett, Hoehn, and Smith on the second. J.
