Foreword Underclassmen June 4, 1956 Mount Vernon High School Mount Vernon, Ohio Dear Underclassmen: Forgive me for not writing sooner. There are certain things I have been meaning to tell you, but I haven't found a minute in which to do so. It doesn't seem possible that this could possibly be June 4, 1956. To many people, perhaps even you, this is iust another day marking the end of another school year. To me this day has a much deeper significance. Tomorrow will be the day for my final high school activity, if not the most important in my high school career, Commencement Day! Have you ever stopped to think about the word commencement? I hadn't either until this year. In fact, lately I've been doing a lot of thinking about many things. The word commencement in itself means the beginning or start. Isn't it strange what a different meaning it holds for some of us as seniors. We seem to give it an almost opposite definition when the time for graduation is near. Although we seem to think of it as the day we've waited for since we began our high school careers, now it seems to represent the end of the best years we've known or, as it seems now, we'll ever know. There was a time when we envied the seniors above us very much. Now we would gladly trade places with you as underclassmen. This year has seemed to be one continuous stream of Iast's. There was the senior band show for the last football game, the last Homecoming game and dance, the last Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter assemblies, the last district tournament basketball game, the last Forum Queen election and then the high point of the year, the Forum Show. Besides these and numerous other last's, there have been the activities which have been lust fortus-Senior Day, honor assembly, the senior prom, baccalaureate, and graduation. Each being perfection in its own way. At times we have all felt that our subiects have been too hard, our teachers uniust, the school days too long, the vacations too short, the tests too rough. But now that we stop to think about it, the knowledge we've acquired, the friends we've made, and the experiences we've had greatly outweigh the gripes we've held. Really though there is no yardstick that could accurately measure everything we've benefited from our school days. How hard it would be to struggle through life without the experience we've had of getting along with people our own age here in school. It's only natural to have some regrets during these past years. If we could have had the knowledge and insight then that we have now how much differently we might have done some things. How much further ahead we'd have been if only during our first years at high school we had studied a little harder and gotten better grades. Then there were the plays and concerts we missed because, Oh well, we could go next time. Sometimes the next times never came. Maybe for some of us there were clubs we put off ioining until it was too late. Many things we might have changed if we had it to do over again. Then there were things that could never have been better than they already were. Although this school-the teachers and our classmates-will soon forget us and what we've done for the school, we, as seniors, will always hold lasting memories of Mount Vernon High School and what it's done for us! I hope I haven't bored you with my reminiscence, but maybe you will realize from what I've said at least a little better what you have to look forward to and the things you should take advantage of before it's too late. Sincerely, Senior, Kathi Mooney
