A Look llnto The Past THE HISTORY OF MOUNT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL ' The educational system of Mt. Vernon has grown from classes held in a small log cabin on the southwest corner of the Public Square to the present junior-Senior High School and several grade schools. The first school was built in 1808 and in 1857 plans were made for a central building which was completed in 1859. This school was used for secondary, grammar and high school. William Mitchell was the first super- intendent and eight other teachers were employed at this building. As the city grew it was necessary to provide a large modern building. FCE E will lllflr In this, the 1949 Forum, we are using history as our theme. just one hun- dred years ago occurred one of the greatest and most spectacular events in American History-the California Gold Rush. Throughout the Forum We have tried to connect events in Mount Vernon High School with the century since the gold rush. The sketches picturing these events were drawn by Pat Warner and Harriet Ward. 'The photographic work was done by Fred Zerull. The Forum staff gives this book to you with the hope that it may serve to help you to remember and cherish the achievements of the days just past.
